This paper emphasizes first-order Markov chains because of their intuitive appeal and rapidly growing applications. Examples are based on stratigraphic analysis, but other uses of the model are discussed briefly. First-order Markov chains are among the simplest stochastic process models, and they afford a point of entry into a large class of probabilistic mechanisms that can be useful in geology. This paper is designed to stimulate experimentation with these models, in part by providing relatively simple computer programs that cover four aspects of such analysis. These programs, listed in the Appendix, include one for testing the presence of a Markov property, a second for raising the transition probability matrix to successive powers in order to estimate the equilibrium states (i.e., the fixed probability vector) of a system, and a third for using the transition matrix in simulation studies. A fourth program for simulating independent-events processes (non-Markovian) can be used with the fixed probability vector of a Markov chain to obtain some interesting comparisons among different ways of structuring a sequence of observations or events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and simulation were introduced to the earth sciences about four decades ago. Modeling has proven its worth and now it is an accepted procedure for analyzing and solving geological problems. The papers in this collection are focused on modeling sediment deposition and sedimentary sequences and have a decidedly practical flavor. Some of the leading simulation packages, such as CORRELATOR, SEDFLUX, SEDpak, SEDSIM, STRATA, and STRATSIM are applied to problems in hydrocarbon exploration, oil production, groundwater development, coal-bed appraisal, geothermics, and environmental diagnosis. All of these subjects fall under the broad heading of sedimentary basin analysis. The fifteen papers in this volume are written by internationally recognized experts from academia and industry. The contributions represent the status of geologic modeling and simulation at the start of the 21st century, and will give the reader an insight into current research problems and their possible solutions.

Book excerpt: Observational data may be structured in various ways for estimating transition probabilities in Markov models. These normally involve taking observations at fixed intervals in time or space. For some studies it is more meaningful to make observations at irregular intervals that correspond to natural division points in the phenomenon studied. In this latter case semi-Markov models are appropriate. Although Markov properties are present in many geological phenomena, stratigraphic data are particularly useful for illustrating three aspects of data collection that are emphasized here: (1) the equal interval approach, in which questions of optimum spacing arise; (2) irregular spacing related to actual rock boundaries such as top and bottom contacts of lithologic units that make up the section; and (3) hierarchical spacing in which the individual beds that make up the lithologic units are the objects of interest. These three ways of collecting data are used on the same stratigraphic section to bring out these differences in approach. The problem of optimum spacing in method (1) is examined; and the more severe problem of adequate operational definitions of bed thickness measurement from subsurface borehole records. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972. This book covers from ‘linear’ statistical methods, regression and variance analysis to multivariate methods to wider spatial analytic techniques, in which a clear association is maintained between quantitative data and the spatial coordinates which locate them. The purpose of this volume is to highlight this coherent area of scholarship under the general headings of spatial point systems, networks, continuous distributions, partitioning and simulation. Seventeen authors from Britain and the United States have been brought together to produce a book whose attention is on the body of spatial techniques necessary to enable the building of dynamic spatial models of landforms which formed the keystone of much geomorphic work in future years.

Book excerpt: A two-week summer short course entitled Current Statistical Methods in Geology supported by the National Science Foundation was held at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle in Chicago, Illinois from June 19 to June 30, 1972. The aim of the short course was to bridge the gap between the traditional first courses in sta tistics offered at most educational institutions and geostatistics as it is being developed by geologists and statisticians engaged in the application of statistics in geology. The course was intended for geology college teachers who were either then teaching or preparing to teach a course within their department dealing with computer ap plications and the use of statistical methods in geology. This book arose out of the class notes which were prepared by the course director and the invited lecturers. We are grateful to the 28 teachers who attended for their enthu siastic interest and thoughtful responses to the many statistical concepts presented to them as geologists during the two weeks of the course. I am deeply grateful to my graduate assistants, Richard Kolb and Andrea Krivz, for the long hours spent in collating the course mater ials, testing the various computer programs, and instructing the par ticipants in the use of computer BASIC.

Book excerpt: This special publication Perspectives in Carbonate Geologyis a collection of papers most of which were presented at asymposium to honor the 80th birthday of Bob Ginsburg at the meetingof Geological Society of America in Salt Lake City in 2005. Themajority of the papers in this publication are connected with thestudy of modern carbonate sediments. Bob Ginsburg pioneered theconcept of comparative sedimentology - that is using the modern tocompare to and relate to and understand the ancient. These studiesare concerned with Bob's areas of passion: coral reefs andsea-level; submarine cementation and formation of beach rock;surface sediments on Great Bahama Bank and other platforms; originof ooids; coastal sediments; formation of stromatolites; impact ofstorms on sediments; and the formation of dolomite. The remainderof the papers apply the study of modern environments andsedimentary processes to ancient sediments. Book excerpt: The ONR Technical Report presents a sequence of computer programs that have been developed as part of a continuing program to apply computer simulation techniques to shallow-water marine sedimentation. Most of the programs are relatively short, and may be regarded as modules for representing specific processes. The modules are not generally useful by themselves for realistic simulation of geologic processes, but instead, are intended for ultimate use as components in larger simulation applications. In many respects, the programs may be regarded as pedagogical models that illustrate a particular mathematical tool applied in a sedimentation context. Hopefully, these program modules will be a step toward providing a generalized base on which other persons who wish to use simulation techniques can build. (Author).

Book excerpt: This volume reports the results of a symposium held in Heidelberg during the International Sedimentological Congress in late August and early September, 1971. The symposium, co sponsored by the International Association for Mathematical Geology, entertained the subject, "Mathematical Models of Sedimentary Processes. " The subject is most appropriate because sedimentologists have long been concerned with processes and mechanisms of sedi ment dispersal. Much effort has gone into building physical models such as flumes, stream tables, wave tanks, wind tunnels, etc. , to help understand sedimentological processes. Quantita tive methods (especially statistics) have been utilized in summarizing these data. It is timely then with the recent developments of simulation and application of computer tech niques that a symposium be addressed to the use of "Mathematical Models of Sedimentary Processes" involving some of these new statistically oriented methods and available data bases. Experimentation in geology has been hampered by a scale factor. That is, it is difficult to find suitab. 1e materials for physical models; it is difficult to find a mechanical de vice which properly represents the forces involved; it is almost impossible to allow adequately for geologic time. Sta tistically valid models are difficult to obtain with physical models because of material replicate problems. Most problems including the time factor, however, can be eliminated with mathematical models. Mathematical models can be infinitely varied in any number of combinations easily and quickly with the computer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty, Modeling, and Decision Making in Geotechnics shows how uncertainty quantification and numerical modeling can complement each other to enhance decision-making in geotechnical practice, filling a critical gap in guiding practitioners to address uncertainties directly. The book helps practitioners acquire a working knowledge of geotechnical risk and reliability methods and guides them to use these methods wisely in conjunction with data and numerical modeling. In particular, it provides guidance on the selection of realistic statistics and a cost-effective, accessible method to address different design objectives, and for different problem settings, and illustrates the value of this to decision-making using realistic examples. Bringing together statistical characterization, reliability analysis, reliability-based design, probabilistic inverse analysis, and physical insights drawn from case studies, this reference guide from an international team of experts offers an excellent resource for state-of-the-practice uncertainty-informed geotechnical design for specialist practitioners and the research community.
