Book excerpt: The emergence of reaction injection molding (RIM) has been fol lowed by the industry with mounting interest. RIM technology has brought to polymer processing a new flexibility and savings in both energy and capital investment. The new developments and the number of engineers and scientists working in RIM is growing at so fast a rate that there is need for sharing information on progress in this area. This book is based on papers presented at the International Symposium on Reaction Injection Molding which was held in 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia, and was sponsored by the American Chemical Society, Division of Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry. The book is divided into four parts covering different areas of RIM development. The first part is devoted to the future trends of RIM develop ment in the United States and Japan. The structure-properties relationship and effects of annealing on properties of RIM elastomers are covered in the second part. New non-urethane polymers such as polyamides, polyisocyanurates and polystyrene suitable for RIM processing are discussed in the third part. In the last part the engineering and technological aspects of RIM, such as glass reinforcement, mixing, flow and moldability are covered in detail. Finally I would like to thank Mrs. Iris Glebe for typing this book and for help with editing, and K. Zielinski for his assistance v vi PREFACE in reviewing and, when necessary, correcting some of the papers. Thanks is also due to the editors of Plenum for their patience and helpfulness.

Book excerpt: This monograph aims to give a comprehensive and detailed review of general results, which have been obtained in a special segment of the design and manufacture of pressure-sensitive products, known as formulation. For manufacturers of pressure-sensitive products and product components, formulation probably includes the main part of their proprietary know-how. The scientific basis of formulation, explaining the reasons behind certain mixing and processing technologies, is doubtless more important than a collection of compositional data and technical parameters. This volume collects technical and scientific materials concerning the most important theoretical and practical aspects of the formulation of pressure-sensitive adhesives. Based on the author's industrial and scientific experience, this treatise constitutes a theoretical and practical state-of-the-art monograph on the formulation of pressure-sensitive products. It is a practical guide for those who want to study, manufacture or use pressure sensitive products or their components, as well as for suppliers of adhesives, elastomers, plastics and additives, or manufacturing equipment. This book will be of value and interest to production and manufacturing managers, production engineers, materials scientists, chemists and new product specialists involved in the production or application of pressure-sensitive products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bio-based Plant Oil Polymers and Composites provides engineers and materials scientists a useful framework to help take advantage of the latest research conducted in this rapidly advancing field—enabling them to develop and commercialize their own products quickly and more successfully. Plant oil is one of the most attractive options as a substitute for non-renewable resources in polymers and composites, and is producing materials with very promising thermomechanical properties relative to traditional, petroleum-based polymers. In addition to critical processing and characterization information, the book assists engineers in deciding whether or not they should use a plant oil-based polymer over a petroleum-based polymer, discussing sustainability concerns, biodegradability, associated costs, and recommended applications. The book details the advancements in the development of polymeric materials and composites from plant oils, and provides a critical review of current applications in various fields, including packaging, biomedical, and automotive applications. Also includes the latest progress in developing multifunctional biobased polymers—by increasing thermal conductivity or adding antibacterial properties, for example. - Essential coverage of processing, characterization, and the latest research into polymeric materials and composites derived from plant oils (thermoplastics, thermosets, nanocomposites, and fiber reinforced composites) - Critically reviews the potential applications of plant oil-based polymers, including sensors, structural parts, medical devices, and automotive interiors - Includes the latest developments in multifunctional bio-based polymer composites
