It is a continuation of the two preceding parts on the photochemistry and the physiology of the eye, and forms a bridge from them to the fourth part on visual psychophysics. These fields have all developed as independent speciali ties and need integrating with each other. The processing of visual information in the brain cannot be understood without some knowledge of the preceding mechanisms in the photoreceptor organs. There are two fundamental reasons, ontogenetic and functional, why this is so: 1) the retina of the vertebrate eye has developed from a specialized part of the brain; 2) in processing their data the eyes follow physiological principles similar to the visual brain centres. Peripheral and central functions should also be discussed in context with their final synthesis in subjective experience, i. e. visual perception. Microphysiology and ultramicroscopy have brought new insights into the neuronal basis of vision. These investigations began in the periphery: HARTLINE'S pioneering experiments on single visual elements of Limulus in 1932 started a successful period of neuronal recordings which ascended from the retina to the highest centres in the visual brain. In the last two decades modern electron microscopic techniques and photochemical investigations of single photoreceptors further contributed to vision research.

This paper studies how to design simple loss functions for central banks, as parsimonious approximations to social welfare. We show, both analytically and quantitatively, that simple loss functions should feature a high weight on measures of economic activity, sometimes even larger than the weight on inflation. Two main factors drive our result. First, stabilizing economic activity also stabilizes other welfare relevant variables. Second, the estimated model features mitigated inflation distortions due to a low elasticity of substitution between monopolistic goods and a low interest rate sensitivity of demand. The result holds up in the presence of measurement errors, with large shocks that generate a trade-off between stabilizing inflation and resource utilization, and also when ensuring a low probability of hitting the zero lower bound on interest rates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ghrelin receptor was identified before its natural ligand ghrelin. This receptor is found both centrally and peripherally, and has been shown to affect various processes, such as food intake, gut motility, memory, glucose and lipid metabolism, cardiovascular performances, reproduction, memory, and immunological responses, amongst others. The functions of the ghrelin receptor in the central nervous system are numerous and are still being explored. In this book we specifically focus on the various roles of the ghrelin receptor in the central nervous system. In a first set of chapters, the book will focus on the discovery and the properties of this intriguing constitutively active G-protein coupled receptor, on its multiple intracellular transduction mechanisms and the various subtypes of the currently known ghrelin receptor complexes. Next, the book will elaborate on the mitochondrial mechanisms regulated by the ghrelin receptor, its role in feeding and drug addictive mechanisms, memory, sleep and arousal. The final chapters focus on the potential of this receptor as a target for the treatment of neurological disorders including Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, anxiety and depression.

Book excerpt: From Anatomy to Function of the Central Nervous System: Clinical and Neurosurgical Applications features neuroradiologic images that represent today, one of the most effective resources able to detect the anatomy of the nerve structures. Simultaneously featuring neuroimages, readers can study the functional aspects of the entire central nervous system with detailed captions that describe in detail how to use and interpret them. This book includes images of the brain dissected with the Klingler’s method and white matter fiber dissection. By integrating the anatomo-functional description with the synaptic organization of the CNS, this reference is useful for anyone who wants to understand how the activity of a nerve structure arises, describing its microstructure, neurotransmitter phenotype, and neural activity. It also features descriptions of pathologic conditions which result from neuroanatomical and/or neurofunctional alterations and includes neurosurgical aspects. Integrates anatomo-functional descriptions with the synaptic and neurochemical organization of the CNS Allows readers to better understand the morphology and topography of encephalic structures Features neuroradiological images and human brain dissections using the Klingler’s method Chapters have references (key article, book, and protocols) for additional detailed studies

Book excerpt: The mammalian central nervous system is a remarkable structure which has attracted many new investigators, as evidenced by the dramatic increase in scientific publications dealing with neurobiology. Every day basic scientists conduct new and exciting experiments, resulting in remarkable discoveries des tined to help mankind. Unfortunately many of these new findings are slow to be accepted by the clinical world. This is especially true in the area of brain trauma, where the present prognosis is usually very poor. We have known for quite some time that the mammalian central nervous system is capable of compensating for severe damage in many different ways, and under some circumstances behav ioral compensation can be observed. However, much is still to be learned about the various factors and events that lead to functional recovery and those condi tions that do not. It is this challenge that originally excited a number of the contributors to this volume to explore the subject of recovery from brain damage. One factor in particular that is known to change the prognosis of recovery is the age of the organism at the time of the damage. This book is an attempt to explore this important variable. Most of the literature concerning aging deals with widespread degenerative changes and paints a grim picture for the aging central nervous system in terms of recovery of function following trauma.

Book excerpt: This unique text relates the dramatic advances of modern neurobiology to our understanding of the structure and function of the autonomic nervous system, providing a clear view of the central neuronal components involved in autonomic control. The scope is wide, ranging from anatomical pathways and molecular pharmacology to the perceptual qualities of autonomic sensation and their potential in modifying behavior. Essential background information is reviewed and the most recent research discussed in a readable, informative manner. The text is richly illustrated. The first six chapters offer a comprehensive review of the system's anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, emphasizing the organization and control of the autonomic preganglionic neurons and the complexity of central pathways. Later chapters review the autonomic control of cardiovascular, sexual, urinary, endocrine, and other functions. Written by an international group of distinguished scientists, this work is a valuable resource for clinicians, scientists, and graduate students in the fields of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and neuroscience.

Book excerpt: The present volume contains all the contributions and general discussion presented at the International Satellite Meeting on Func tion and Metabolism of Phospholipids in Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems held at Cortona, Tuscany, Italy in August 1975. The Satellite Meeting was organized on the frame of the 5th Inter national Congress of the International Society for Neurochemistry (Barcelona, 2-7 september 1975) and was just run before it. The publication of the scientific content of this volume has been made possible by the collaboration of the speakers, the discussants, the Meeting Chairman, the section chairmen and of all the scientists who have taken part at the Symposium and who deeply and actively discussed the lectures and the contributions to the General Discus sion which were delivered. In order to obtain rapid publication of the volume, however, the single discussions for each delivered contribution will not be reported here. The general subject of membrane structure, of the turnover of its lipid components in CNS and PNS, their functional implica tions and pharmacological actions, was explored in details from the stand-points of the various contributors in biophysics, biochem istry, physiology, cytology, pharmacology and pathology. The whole Symposium was effiCiently introduced and closed by Dr. W. Stoffel. The meeting has been thought to have been very successful.
