Book Synopsis Forgiveness by : Vladimir Jankélévitch
Download or read book Forgiveness written by Vladimir Jankélévitch and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch has only recently begun to receive his due from the English-speaking world, thanks in part to discussions of his thought by Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Lévinas, and Paul Ricoeur. His international readers have long valued his unique, interdisciplinary approach to philosophy’s greatest questions and his highly readable writing style. Originally published in 1967, Le Pardon, or Forgiveness, is one of Jankélévitch’s most influential works. In it, he characterizes the ultimate ethical act of forgiving as behaving toward the perpetrator as if he or she had never committed the action, rather than merely forgetting or rationalizing it—a controversial notion when considering events as heinous as the Holocaust. Like so many of Jankélévitch’s works, Forgiveness transcends standard treatments of moral problems, not simply generating a treatise on one subject but incorporating discussions of topics such as free will, giving, creativity, and temporality. Translator Andrew Kelley masterfully captures Jankélévitch’s melodic prose and, in a substantive introduction, reviews his life and intellectual contributions. Forgiveness is an essential part of that legacy, and this indispensable English translation provides key tools for understanding one of the great Western philosophers of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis The Limits of Forgiveness by : Maria Mayo
Download or read book The Limits of Forgiveness written by Maria Mayo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demystifying an unrealistic ideal Maria Mayo questions the contemporary idealization of unconditional forgiveness in three areas of contemporary life: so-called Victim-Offender Mediation involving cases of criminal injury, the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-apartheid South Africa, and the pastoral care of victims of domestic violence. She shows that an emphasis on unilateral and unconditional forgiveness puts disproportionate pressure on the victims of injustice or violence and misconstrues the very biblical passages—especially in Jesus’ teaching and actions—on which advocates of unconditional forgiveness rely.
Book Synopsis Biblical Boundaries of Forgiveness by : Vee Chandler
Download or read book Biblical Boundaries of Forgiveness written by Vee Chandler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this well-researched and ethical study, Vee Chandler combines insight gathered from the writings of scholars and Christian philosophers with personal observations and biblical perspectives to examine the nature and value of forgiveness and help those struggling with the concepts of repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Chandler begins by exploring key questions such as, When does God forgive and not forgive? and, What is God’s wrath and mercy? and then attempts to answer these questions by first defining terms according to their scriptural usage. She then examines the relationship between repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation according to the biblical model. In the second section, Chandler exegetically scrutinizes scriptural texts related to interpersonal forgiveness as well as passages concerning how God’s people should relate to their enemies and to evil persons. Finally Chandler examines the ethics of forgiveness from a moral and philosophical point of view, and ultimately establishes a model for forgiveness and reconciliation based on the biblical pattern and defended from a logical and ethical perspective. Biblical Boundaries of Forgiveness embraces the contribution of Christian philosophers while examining the nature and value of forgiveness from spiritual and moral viewpoints.

Book Synopsis Unpacking Forgiveness by : Chris Brauns
Download or read book Unpacking Forgiveness written by Chris Brauns and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2008-09-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helps readers move beyond the wounds and baggage of bitterness, disagreements, and broken relationships. "True or false: most Christian pastors and counselors agree on what forgiveness is and how it should take place." This question is part of Chris Brauns's Forgiveness Quiz that draws readers into his book and gets them thinking about the subject of forgiveness. The truth is, pastors and counselors disagree profoundly on this subject. Unpacking Forgiveness combines sound theological thinking and honesty about the complicated questions many face to provide readers with a solid understanding of biblical forgiveness. Only God's Word can unpack forgiveness. The wounds are too deep for us to find healing on our own, and the questions are too complex to be unraveled by anything but the wisdom of God. This book goes beyond a feel-good doctrine of automatic forgiveness, balancing the beauty of God's grace and the necessity of forgiveness with the teaching that forgiveness must take place in a way that is consistent with justice.
Book Synopsis The Healing Power of Forgiveness by : Ray Pritchard
Download or read book The Healing Power of Forgiveness written by Ray Pritchard and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Christians realize nearly every problem in life stems from an unwillingness to forgive someone. When we hold grudges, seek retribution, and blame others, we end up hurting our relationships with God and people—and short-circuit our ability to live the Christian live the way it's meant to be lived. Why is forgiveness so difficult at times? Must we forgive when it's the other person's fault? How should we handle repeat offenses? What if we feel we can't forgive because we've been hurt so badly? Pritchard answers these questions and more by pointing to God's example as the Supreme Forgiver. When we learn to forgive in the way He forgives, then we'll know true freedom, peace, and emotional healing.
Book Synopsis Metánoia (Repentance) by : Choongjae Lee
Download or read book Metánoia (Repentance) written by Choongjae Lee and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew describes the beginning of Jesus's ministry with the summary words, ""μετανοεῖτε (repent/turn), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"" (3:2; 4:17). Why does Matthew use this command, μετανοεῖτε, at the beginning of his ministry, and how does it relate to the rest of the Gospel? What do μετανοέω and μετάνοια mean? Scholars have stated that μετανοέω in 4:17 has critical value for understanding Matthew because the verse functions as a summary statement (or key phrase) of Jesus's public ministry and teaching. This book argues the thematic significance of μετάνοια (turning/repentance) in the Gospel of Matthew. The lexical idea of μετανοέω and μετάνοια involves a turning of mind (or heart, will, thinking) and behavior, and so in turn of one's whole being and life. This opening commandment of turning (μετανοέω), especially the concept, the essence, and the contents is fully revealed throughout the body of Matthew in various ways. Discipleship, the language of righteousness, doing the will of God, changing one's heart and mind, the Great Commission, and Matthean soteriological theme convey the essence of μετάνοια and the contents of the fruit worthy of μετάνοια(3:2, 8; 4:17). The five major teaching blocks (5-7; 10; 13; 18; 23-25) teach the theme and the content of μετάνοια.
