Department of Interior, Office of National Parks Buildings Reservations, The Master Plan, Mount Rainier National Park 1933. (master Plans) Overleaf: Proposed Hotel Development, Mount Rainier National Park, April 3, 1950. In the late 19405 and early 1950s the public demanded that the National Park Service (nps) develop a winter use policy that would make the Paradise area of Mount Rainier a ski resort. Skiers wanted all-year road access, overnight accommodations, and a chair lift or an aerial tram at Paradise. The proposed hotel would have had 250 guest rooms, employee quarters and offices, a museum, lecture hall, warming rooms and ski shops. The dining room and cafeteria would have seated 475. The nps did not want to turn Mt. Rainier into a ski resort and rejected the hotel proposal. Other regional ski areas emerged over the next decade and public demand for a ski resort at Paradise decreased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Outings on the Rainier National Forest The summit Of the Cascades, with a general elevation of feet, is'the natural division line between the dense forests of the west slopes and the open yellow pine country of the east side. Peaks and sharp rocky crests rise abruptly from broad flattened ridges, separated by low saddles. The summit trails follow the ridges and, avoiding the high broken peaks, tu'rn east or west below the cliffs. The traveler's outlook -is alternately over the eastern and Western valleys. In the near distance are the snow peaks. Of Rainier, Adams, and St. Helens, and far away the luminous summits of Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson rise above the blue haze. Near at hand the landscape IS varied and pleasing. The trail winds through shaded woodlands of thickset hemlock and mountain fir, and comes out into broad open meadows of short green grass and many-colored flowers. Open parks alternate with woodland and everywhere are small clear lakes and pools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mammals and Birds of Mount Rainier National Park Mammals and birds furnish life and action in what would other wise be at times a grim and forbidding picture of glacier, beetling cliff, or gloomy forest. They complete the circle of interesting natural objects which combine to justify in so high a degree the establishment of the park. A good animal picture is a thing Of beauty; a well-mounted group is still more attractive; but no picture, group, or model can compete in interest with the living animal in its natural surroundings. Mammal and bird habitats include some of the wildest and grand est areas On Mount Rainier, some accessible with ease, others only with the greatest difficulty. Living creatures are Often found in most unexpected places (see pp. 166 and and at least two rodents (white-footed mouse and little chipmunk) and one large carnivore (black bear) have been reported from the extreme summit of Mount Rainier. It is obvious that the park visitor, if he wishes to do so, can find physical, mental, and spiritual recreation in the pursuit of knowledge of the ways of our furred and feathered friends without in any sense exhausting the possibilities of profitable and pleasant occupation. It is America's fifth national park, established in 1899. The mountain is an active but currently dormant volcano. With 25 named glaciers, 50 smaller unnamed glaciers, and numerous perennial snowfields, Mount Rainier boasts the largest glacier system in the continental United States. In addition to the glacier zone, the park has alpine and subalpine forest and subtropical rain forest. Each zone has its own unique ecology of plants and animals. The vistas of and from the mountain are some of the most spectacular in all of the park system.
