Book excerpt: The book explores the right to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) – a highly controversial right. It is mainly discussed in the context of large-scale business projects on Indigenous territories but also with respect to the creation of protected areas and communities’ traditional resource rights. From a legal anthropological perspective, it attempts to disentangle the various coexisting understandings of FPIC and provide an explanation for the multiplicity of FPIC norms or – to put it in other words – its fragmentation. It examines the right- or stakeholders of FPIC, the scope of the consent requirement, the respect for self-determined decision-making, and the right to FPIC of women in different sociolegal fields. Moreover, it explores the impact of power relations, strategic alliances, and discourses within these fields and shows that the emerging FPIC norms are the result of norm negotiation processes. The fields that are examined include transnational law – more specifically, human rights, environmental, and development law -, the Liberian post-conflict forest and land legislation, and Liberian community forests as fields in which FPIC is operationalized. Liberia is quite unique in this respect. It is not only one of the few countries in Africa recognizing FPIC but has also begun implementing it. The book shows that based on the logic of a sociolegal field, legal identities are discursively created and determine the meaning of FPIC. Moreover, different actors can resort to different legalities shaping the emerging FPIC norm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberia is a small country located on the western coast of Africa. The country was founded in 1847 by freed slaves from the United States, and it was the first African nation to gain its independence in the 20th century. The country is rich in natural resources such as timber, diamonds, and iron ore, but it has suffered from political instability and civil war. The official language of Liberia is English, which is a result of the country's ties to the United States. The religion is predominantly Christian, with around 85% of the population practicing Christianity. Liberia has a unique and diverse culture, with strong emphasis on traditional beliefs and practices. The country is known for its vibrant music scene, which includes genres such as Afro-pop and Gospel. Despite its troubled past, Liberia has made significant strides towards political stability and economic growth in recent years.

Download or read book African-American Exploration in West Africa written by James Fairhead and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1860s, as America waged civil war, several thousand African Americans sought greater freedom by emigrating to the fledgling nation of Liberia. While some argued that the new black republic represented disposal rather than emancipation, a few intrepid men set out to explore their African home. African-American Exploration in West Africa collects the travel diaries of James L. Sims, George L. Seymour, and Benjamin J. K. Anderson, who explored the territory that is now Liberia and Guinea between 1858 and 1874. These remarkable diaries reveal the wealth and beauty of Africa in striking descriptions of its geography, people, flora, and fauna. The dangers of the journeys surface, too -- Seymour was attacked and later died of his wounds, and his companion, Levin Ash, was captured and sold into slavery again. Challenging the notion that there were no black explorers in Africa, these diaries provide unique perspectives on 19th-century Liberian life and life in the interior of the continent before it was radically changed by European colonialism.

Book Synopsis The Wicked Problem of Forest Policy by : William Nikolakis
Download or read book The Wicked Problem of Forest Policy written by William Nikolakis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests play an important role in resolving global challenges such as sustainable development, climate change, biodiversity loss, and food and water security. Stopping deforestation is crucial for the future of our planet. Global efforts to curb deforestation, have been partially successful, but have largely fallen short. At the same time, national level efforts to support human development, reflected in the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, aim to increase the welfare and wellbeing of populations living in poverty. Meeting these development goals will inevitably have crosscutting effects on initiatives to address deforestation. In balancing these goals, policy makers are confronted with wicked problems – or problems where there are moral considerations and where limited information is available for policy makers. This book is focused on how wicked forest policy problems have been, and can be, addressed.
