Book Synopsis The Forest-Atmosphere Interaction by : B.A. Hutchison
Download or read book The Forest-Atmosphere Interaction written by B.A. Hutchison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of meteorological phenomena upon forest produc tivity and forestry operations have been of concern for many years. With the evolution of system-level studies of forest eco system structure and function in the International Biological Program and elsewhere, more fundamental interactions between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere received scientific atten tion but the emphasis on meteorological and climatological effects on forest processes remained. More recently, as recogni tion has developed of potential and actual problems associated with the atmospheric transport, dispersion, and deposition of airborne pollutants, the effects of forest canopies upon boundary-layer meteorological phenomena has come under scientific scrutiny. Looking to the future, with rising atmospheric con centrations of C02 and increasing competition for the finite fresh-water resources of the earth, interest in the role of forests in global C02 and water balances can also be expected to intensify. Thus, the nature of forest canopy-atmosphere interac tions, that is to say, the meteorological phenomena occurring in and above forest canopies, are of importance to a wide variety of scientific and social-issues. Demands for forest meteorological information currently exceed levels of knowledge and given the economic constraints of science in general and environmental sciences in particular, chances for major improvements in scien tific support in the near future are slim. Unfortunately, studies of environmental phenomena in and above forests are costly and logistically difficult. Trees, the ecological dominants of forest ecosystems, are the largest of all terrestrial organisms.
Book Synopsis Motion Control for Intelligent Automation by : A. De Carli
Download or read book Motion Control for Intelligent Automation written by A. De Carli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motion Control is a rapidly evolving topic, with a wide range of applications, especially in robotics. Speed and position control of a mechanical system has always been one of the main problems in automatic control, as the demand increases for advanced levels of accuracy and dynamics. The study of motion control aims to combine theoretical approaches with the realization of mechanical systems characterized by high levels of performance. The IFAC workshop focused on the evolution of: mechanical systems modelling; control strategies; intelligent instrumentation; dedicated microprocessor devices, and new fields of application.

Book Synopsis Boreal Forests and Global Change by : Michael J. Apps
Download or read book Boreal Forests and Global Change written by Michael J. Apps and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boreal forests form Earth's largest terrestrial biome. They are rich in ecosystem and landscape diversity, though characterized by relatively few plant species, as compared to other forested regions. The long term viability and sustainability of boreal forests is influenced by many factors. They are subject to interruptions at intervals by large-scale natural disturbances, and increasingly by human activities. Boreal ecosystem development is typically a slow process; hence rapid changes in the global environment may invoke complex responses. Many industrial nations border, or lie within, boreal regions, deriving much of their economic wealth and culture from the forests. The response of boreal forests to changes in the global environment - whether caused by direct human activity or by indirect changes such as the anticipated changes in climate - are therefore of considerable international interest, both for their policy implications and their scientific challenges. This book which contains almost 50 peer-reviewed papers from a world-wide group of experts assembled under the auspices of IBFRA, the International Boreal Forest Research Association, covers topics which will stimulate further research and the development of constructive policies for improved management and conservation of global boreal forest resources.
