Book Synopsis Atlantic Salmon in Maine by : National Research Council
Download or read book Atlantic Salmon in Maine written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the pervasive and substantial decline of Atlantic salmon populations in Maine over the past 150 years, and because they are close to extinction, a comprehensive statewide action should be taken now to ensure their survival. The populations of Atlantic salmon have declined drastically, from an estimated half million adult salmon returning to U.S. rivers each year in the early 1800s to perhaps as few as 1,000 in 2001. The report recommends implementing a formalized decision-making approach to establish priorities, evaluate options and coordinate plans for conserving and restoring the salmon.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present here the results of our initial effort to use FIA data to assess biodiversity in Maine's forests. Biodiversity is a complex issue and, from the start, it was apparent that the FIA data are inadequate for examining all facets of biodiversity. Nevertheless, the FIA provides the most comprehensive and detailed data on Maine's forests and can be used to measure some indicators of forest biodiversity, in particular those related to tree species and stand characteristics.

Book Synopsis Direct and Indirect Human Contributions to Terrestrial Carbon Fluxes by : National Research Council
Download or read book Direct and Indirect Human Contributions to Terrestrial Carbon Fluxes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-07-30 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human-induced climate change is an important environmental issue worldwide, as scientific studies increasingly demonstrate that human activities are changing the Earth's climate. Even if dramatic reductions in emissions were made today, some human-induced changes are likely to persist beyond the 21st century. The Kyoto Protocol calls for emissions reporting that separates out management-induced changes in greenhouse gases from those changes caused by indirect human effects (e.g., carbon dioxide fertilization, nitrogen deposition, or precipitation changes), natural effects, and past practices on forested agricultural lands. This book summarizes a September 2003 workshop where leaders from academia, government and industry came together to discuss the current state of scientific understanding on quantifying direct human-induced change in terrestrial carbon stocks and related changes in greenhouse gas emissions and distinguishing these changes from those caused by indirect and natural effects.
