Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Northeastern and Lake States While the need for tree planting has not been felt in New England and the Lake States as keenly as in the treeless West, large areas of land within this region are fit only for forest growth. From an economic standpoint it is important that these lands should be put into a state Of productiveness. Extensive forest planting has thus far been somewhat discouraged by present methods of taxation and in part Of the region by the difficulty in securing adequate protection from fire. The true value of forest land and its rightful place among the permanent resources of the State are, however, becoming recognized, and an enlightened public sentiment is rapidly making this form of investment safe and profitable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Lake States The land in need of reforestation to which this bulletin applies (fig. Lies in the northern two-thirds of the States of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. It includes the area north of a line from Saginaw Bay, in Michigan, westward through Sheboygan, Wis, thence northwestward through St. Croix Falls, lwis, to Wadena, Minn, and northward to Thief River Falls and the Canadian bound ary. This is the region from which the famous white pine lumber of the Lake States came, and which more recently has produced and continues to produce a large quantity of sugar maple, eastern hem lock, basswood, yellow birch, beech, spruces, balsam fir, and jack pine. It does not include the southern parts of the three States, where oaks, hickories, and maples are the characteristic trees usually occurring as small woodland areas on farms. The planting prob lems of the southern area of the Lake States are not the same as those of the north; they have already been covered to some extent in several published reports 6, 13, 14, 32, 33, 34, 38, 60, 6-5, 68, 69, The climate, topography, and soil, although varying locally, are for the region as a whole comparably uniform. The precipitation ranges from about 25 inches annually in parts of lower Michigan and western Minnesota to 40 inches in northwestern Wisconsin. For most of the region it is between 30 and 35 inches annually, of which 20 to 25 inches falls during the growing season from April 1 to September 80. The snowfall increases northward and is noticeably heavier and remains on the ground longer in the region of Lake Superior and in northern Minnesota than elsewhere in the region. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of the Lake States Region A number of sawmills and other wood - using plants in the Lake States have closed during the past decade, and some concern has been felt for the security of others because of a progressive decline in quantity, quality, and availability of standing timber. A major purpose of the survey, therefore, Was to determine the extent of remaining timber sup plies, the wood requirements of local industries, and the possibilities of meeting these requirements through proper management of the forest resources. Consideration was also given to the possibility of developing new industries to utilize materials hitherto left in the woods or wasted in the logging and milling process. While this report deals primarily with physical resources, the underlying purpose has been to measure the capacity of the forests to contribute to local revenue, employment. And community welfare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Growing and Logging Practice in the Lake States The second group of measures proposed constitute what may be called desirable forestry practice They are designed to grow crops of the more valuable products and to use fully the productive capacity of the land. The recommendations embodied in this group of measures are addressed primarily to the landowner who wishes to get the most out of his property in real timber culture. It is impossible. To formulate a set of measures of this character that would be adapted to the great variety of growth types and of industrial requirements found in the Lake States. Hence, Zon has simply outlined the more fundamental things, with illustrative methods of forest practice. The details of forestry, like the details of engineering, require expert study to determine the plans and methods adapted to a particular tract of land or a particular business. One of the most important features of forest planning is to devise not simply woods operations that will produce the most valuable crops of timber, but a program of land ownership and logging that will furnish a continuous yield of the products desired or a sustained supply of raw material for plant requirements. It need not here be questioned whether this is literally true or not; but one thing is certain, in the planting and culture of forest-trees every false step taken must be a backward one. As soon as a piece of ground is fixed upon for planting, the forester should take every available means and Opportunity of knowing all that can be known about it. By this it is not implied that any one is capable of knowing everything that is desirable to be known, but that he Should put himself in possession of as much knowledge of the subject as he possibly can. We often learn as much from the mistakes and failures as we do from the successes of ourselves or others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reforestation Research Findings in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Were than three million acres are estin ted to be in need of reforestation in northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.i. Past experience has developed workable methods of tree planting, but, in view of the huge program required, the most efficient practice known should be followed. To help answer the basic questions of what, when, and where to plant in this region, a number of pilot - plant or exploratory plantings were made between 1937 and 19m2, during the days of the Civilian Conservation Corps. These included m9o acres of exploratory plantings involving more than trees on 135 plots on the Nicolet and Chequamegon National Forests in northern.wise0nsin supplemented by additional tests between 19m2 and l9u9 and several plantings on the Upper Michigan National Forest near Manistique. These plantings provided valuable data on comparative ival, growth rate, and ability of the various species to endure shade, etition, drought, excessive exposure, and other factors in their early years. Results and conclusions of these tests are summarized in this report. They vide information more local in.application than that given in the recent letih, Forest Plantations in the Lake States.fl. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Tree Culturist: A Treatise on the Cultivation of American Forest Trees, With Notes on the Most Valuable Foreign Species Some years since, while gratifying my taste for Horticultural experiments, I was led to plant seeds of many of our native forest trees. The results satisfied me that nothing was wanting but a better acquaintance with the nature and habits of these seeds to insure success with them as uniformly as with any others; consequently I gave the subject attention, and by observation and experiment learned how to manage not only the trees of our own forests, but many foreign varieties. I would not be understood to say that I have planted seeds and raised trees of every species and variety, but have experimented sufficiently with the different species as to know whereof I write. My success was such that the Farmer's Club of the American Institute desired me to give at one of their meetings an account of my experiments, which I did briefly. This was published as a portion of the Report of the meeting in the New York Tribune, and from that copied by other papers throughout the country. In consequence thereof, I have received many letters asking more definite information on different points, so many that I have been unable to reply to them so fully as I could have wished. The following pages were written for the purpose of giving such information as the public seem to desire. This circumltance alone ought furely to be of much confidera tion in this climate, as our grounds in winter are ufually lo much lock'd up with froll, flooded with rains, or the weather lotherways lo intemperate, that our common planting feafon is confined to a fmall part of fpring and autumn. In New England white pine seldom formed solid bodies of large extent, but usually grew mixed with spruce and other conifers and hardwoods. In several places, however, large pure stands of white pine were found. Great pine forests stretched along the valleys of the Connecticut and Merrimac Rivers and grew along the shores of Lake Champlain in western Vermont.
