Book excerpt: The Canadian National Forest Inventory has a plot location design based on a 20-by-20 kilometre grid system. In British Columbia, this results in about 1,200 grid points that fall on forested or potentially forested land. Of these points, 268 have been identified as ground sampling grid points to be monitored or remeasured over time. Some of these targeted sample locations are expected to be inaccessible for such reasons as difficulty or danger of access, excessive distance or lack of reasonable means of access, or access denied on private land. This document describes a procedure that will facilitate the collection of alternative data for the Inventory that will be equivalent to what would be obtained from the original targeted location. Criteria for selecting a substitute grid location are also provided.
