Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainable management of the Forest Industries challenges many different disciplines. Not only do the different forest industry sectors vary in the approaches needed, but the unique nature of mills and their surrounding environments create a huge variety of conditions and hence of strategies to be employed. Yet again the IAWQ's Forest Industry Wastewaters Symposium provided a forum for the world's leading experts to discuss the scientific and practical issues and report progress. The proceedings are introduced by 4 invited papers that examine the social, economic and ecological relationships of the forest industries and together with the concluding summary of the sessions and related panel discussion make plain the context in which the industries operate and can continue to improve their performance. The 42 selected papers cover: Process water treatment and recirculation Biological treatment Environmental effects Treatment and utilization of solids Studies of specific compounds and management of residuals and toxicity. These proceedings genuinely constitute a briefing on the state of the art and will prove invaluable to anyone involved as a researcher or a practitioner in the management of forest industry wastewaters.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forestry industry is a major source of water pollution in countries producing pulp and paper, and treatment of this wastewater needs to be achieved both economically and efficiently. The application of the anaerobic process, which has been shown to have distinct advantages over conventional wastewater treatment in certain situations, has generated growing interest. This symposium enabled the exchange of views and experiences on anaerobic treatment of forest industry wastewaters and was a forum for the presentation of the latest research efforts in this field.

Book Synopsis Pollutant Diseases, Remediation and Recycling by : Eric Lichtfouse
Download or read book Pollutant Diseases, Remediation and Recycling written by Eric Lichtfouse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-25 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution has no borders. This popular 70’s saying from early ecologists is surprisingly still true nowadays despite overwhelming scientific evidence and public awareness of the occurrence of artificial toxic substances in water, food, air, living organisms and the environment. This book presents advanced reviews on pollutant occurrence, transfer, toxicity and remediation. The chapter on school air quality by Dambruoso et al. highlights the overlooked health issue of airborne pollutants in buildings. Children are particularly threatened because they spend 90% of their time indoors, even in summer. The chapter on industrial wastewater pollutants by Dsikowitzky and Schwarzbauer reviews pollutants from textile, petrochemical, paper, tire, chemical and pharmaceutical plants. The authors describe advanced analytical methods and ecotoxicity tests. Industrial pollutants include dioxins and furans that are also reviewed in the chapter by Mudhoo et al. The chapter on fly ash by Gianoncelli et al. presents many techniques to treat fly ash and, in turn, decrease pollutant concentrations. The authors also explain that fly ash can be recycled in agriculture, buildings and geopolymers. The chapter on antifouling paints used for ship protection, by Sousa et al., highlights the occurrence of toxic organotins in human organs such as heart, liver and breast milk. The chapter on surfactants by Rebello et al. focuses on safety concerns for humans and the ecosystems. Remediation techniques and green surfactants are presented. The chapters on toxic metals by Nava-Ruíz and Méndez-Armenta, Abarikwu and Ristić et al. describe sources, monitoring and diseases induced by lead, mercury, cadmium and thallium. The chapter on carcinogenic nitrosamines by Li et al. presents techniques and materials such as zeolites to remediate liquids and smoke containing nitrosamines.

Book Synopsis Bioremediation Technology by : M. H. Fulekar
Download or read book Bioremediation Technology written by M. H. Fulekar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental pollutants have become a major global concern. The modern growth of industrialization, urbanization, modern agricultural development and energy generation have resulted in indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources for fulfilling the human desires and needs, which have contributed in disturbing the ecological balance on which the quality of environment depends. The modern technological advancements in chemical processes/operations have been raised to new products and also new pollutants in abundant level which are above the self cleaning capacity of the environment. One of the major issues in present times is the threat to human lives, due to the progressive deterioration of the environment. This book discusses bioremediation technology-based remediation to restore contaminated sites and protect the environment. It studies the opportunities for more efficient biological processes in molecular biology and ecology. Notable accomplishments of these studies include the cleaning up of polluted water and contaminated land. The book includes invited papers by eminent contributors who provide cost-effective bioremediation strategies to immobilize contaminants for cleanup of environment. The book is directed towards postgraduate students in biotechnology/life sciences/environmental sciences/biosciences and researchers in universities and research institutes and industries.
