The Mack Lake fire, a plume-dominated fire, is shown as a solid line, and the Sundance fire. A wind-driven fire, is shown as a dashed line. As the name implies, a crown fire is a fire carried through the crowns of living forests. Before reaching this condition, a fire can go through several stages of development. Typically, a fire may Spread for some time in sur face fuels such as grass, forest litter, or shrubs, without interacting with the overstory. It may even smolder in forest duff for days or weeks until burning conditions improve and the fire becomes active and begins to Spread. Beighley and Bishop (1990) provide an excellent description of the transition from surface fire to crown fire in high-elevation forests. Favor able conditions for a crown fire include. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fire-Bgc: A Mechanistic Ecological Process Model for Simulating Fire Succession on Coniferous Forest Landscapes of the Northern Rocky Mountains The second portion of this paper details the application of fire-b'gc to a whitebark pine (pinus albicaulis) forest in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex (bmw C) of Montana. This simulation is referred to in this paper as the bmw C project. The objective was to investigate the consequences of management policies on the whitebark pine ecosystem dynamics in a spatial domain. Several management scenarios were simulated on a ha upper subalpine landscape in the southwestern part of the Swan Range of the bmwc to determine the response of whitebark pine to vari ous management actions. Many fire-bgc parameters presented in this paper were quantified specifically for this study area using field data collected by Keane and Morgan (1994) and Keane and others Ex amples of these parameters are provided throughout model documentation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Conditions in the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve Sir, - I submit herewith a report which has been prepared by Mr. T. W. Dwight of his investigations of last season in regard to the relation of the Species of timber in the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve, the effect of the methods of lumbering followed on their reproduction, and the extent to which natural reproduction has followed. The work! That has been done by Mr. Dwight in this way will be of great assistance in determining the methods which are to be followed in the cutting of timber so as to ensure the natural reproduction of the best species. Investigations of this kind enable us to plan methods with greater certainty that the results will be those that we intended to reach. It is important that we should have a thorough understanding of natural reproduction and of the factors which govern it, as we must depend on it very largely for the reproduction of our forests, as reproduction by artificial means will be too expensive to be used extensively at the present time, and we should resort to it only where natural reproduction is clearly not sufficient to accomplish the work. I would recommend that this report of Mr. Dwight's be printed as a bulletin of this Branch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s a place of big skies and big fires, big burns like those of 1910 and 1988 that riveted national attention. Conflagrations like those of 1934 and 2007 that reformed national policy. Blowups like that in Mann Gulch that shaped the literature of American fire. Big fires mostly hidden in the backcountry like the Fitz Creek and Howler fires that inspired the practice of managed wildfires. Until the fire revolution of the 1960s, no region so shaped the American way of fire. The Northern Rockies remain one of three major hearths for America’s fire culture. They hold a major fire laboratory, an equipment development center, an aerial fire depot, and a social engagement with fire—even a literature. Missoula is to fire in the big backcountry what Tallahassee is to prescribed burning and what Southern California is to urban-wildland hybrids. On its margins, Boise hosts the National Interagency Fire Center. In this structured collection of essays on the region, Stephen J. Pyne explores what makes the Northern Rockies distinctive and what sets it apart from other regions of the country. Surprisingly, perhaps, the story is equally one of big bureaucracies and of generations that encounter the region’s majestic landscapes through flame. The Northern Rockies is part of a multivolume series describing the nation’s fire scene region by region. The volumes in To the Last Smoke also cover Florida, the Northern Rockies, the Great Plains, the Southwest, and several other critical fire regions. The series serves as an important punctuation point to Pyne’s 50-year career with wildland fire—both as a firefighter and a fire scholar. These unique surveys of regional pyrogeography are Pyne’s way of “keeping with it to the end,” encompassing the directive from his rookie season to stay with every fire “to the last smoke.”
