Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. The paramount question facing natural resource management is how to develop sustainable management approaches. Illustrated by an in-depth study of the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania, this volume examines the role of community in the management of natural resources along with stakeholders' rights, responsibilities and relationships to the forest. The author: reviews the significance of natural forest in the Eastern Arc; identifies changing forest management approaches in Tanzania; identifies stakeholders in natural forest management and whether they are primary or secondary stakeholders; examines historical imbalances in stakeholders' roles and relations between stakeholders; and draws conclusions on the effect of imbalances in stakeholders' roles on the development of sustainable forest management practices in the Eastern Arc.

Book Synopsis Conserving Biodiversity in East African Forests by : W.D. Newmark
Download or read book Conserving Biodiversity in East African Forests written by W.D. Newmark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanzania is one of the most biologically diverse nations in the world. Traveling from west to east across Tanzania, one encounters an incredible array of ecosystems and species. Beginning at Lakes Victoria, Tanganyika, and Nyasa that form much of the western boundary of Tanzania, one finds the most diverse and some of the most spectacular concentrations of endemic fish in any of the world's lakes. Moving further inland from the lakes, one meets the woodlands and plains of Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. The assemblages and movements of large mammals in these protected areas are unparalleled worldwide. Traveling yet further to the east, one comes to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is of sufficient height to not only contain seven major vegetation zones, but also maintain permanent glaciers. Finally, shortly before arriving at the Indian Ocean, one encounters the Eastern Arc Mountains, a series of isolated and geologically ancient mountains, which due to their height and proximity to the Indian Ocean intercept sufficient precipitation to support, in many areas, moist tropical forest. The Eastern Arc Mountains are among the richest sites biologically in all of Africa and harbor unusually high concentrations of endemic species - species whose geographic distribution are restricted to these mountains. Unfortunately, much of Tanzania's biodiversity is threatened by habitat alteration, destruction, and exploitation. The Eastern Arc forests face some of the most severe threats to any of Tanzania's biologically unique sites.
Book Synopsis Butterfly Farming and Conservation Behavior in the East Usambara Mountains of Tanzania by : Theron Morgan-Brown
Download or read book Butterfly Farming and Conservation Behavior in the East Usambara Mountains of Tanzania written by Theron Morgan-Brown and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While butterfly farming only relies on natural forests for a few inputs, these inputs appear sufficient to link butterfly farming to forest conservation. Butterfly farming, as practiced in this project, is an example of how forest conservation can be promoted by linking limited harvest of non-timber forest products from natural forests with cultivation of the same products in adjacent communities.
Book Synopsis Degraded Forests in Eastern Africa by : Frans Bongers
Download or read book Degraded Forests in Eastern Africa written by Frans Bongers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest degradation as a result of logging, shifting cultivation, agriculture and urban development is a major issue throughout the tropics. It leads to loss in soil fertility, water resources and biodiversity, as well as contributes to climate change. Efforts are therefore required to try to minimize further degradation and restore tropical forests in a sustainable way. This is the first research-based book to examine this problem in East Africa. The specific focus is on the forests of Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda, but the lessons learned are shown to be applicable to neighbouring countries and others in the tropics. A wide range of forest types are covered, from dry Miombo forest and afromontane forests, to forest-savannah mosaics and wet forest types. Current management practices are assessed and examples of good practice presented. The role of local people is also emphasized. The authors describe improved management and restoration through silviculture, plantation forestry and agroforestry, leading to improvements in timber production, biodiversity conservation and the livelihoods of local people.
Book Synopsis Biotic Diversity in Agroecosystems by : D. Pimentel
Download or read book Biotic Diversity in Agroecosystems written by D. Pimentel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preservation of biodiversity is a high priority among biologists, ecologists and environmentalists. The impact that human activities have on biodiversity is clear; however, few studies have focused on the importance of biodiversity to natural and agricultural ecosystems. In fact, many natural species are essential to sustainable agricultural programs. A new school of thought is appreciating the ecological principles and benefits that diversity of natural biota have for humans and the environment. Landscape ecology and agroecology can play a major role in protecting the environment and conserving biological diversity. The practical opportunities for improving the sustainability of agriculture and making it more environmentally sound were discussed at the Symposium on Agroecology and Conservation Issues, from which 22 papers were collected for this volume. Strategies for increasing biodiversity in agricultural landscapes are provided alongside discussion that agriculture will continue to spread into forests, to meet the growing need for food. Although humans recognize the value of crop and livestock species, few really appreciate the fact that agriculture and forestry cannot function in a productive sustainable way when significant numbers of species in natural biota are lost.
Book Synopsis Plant Invasions in Protected Areas by : Llewellyn C. Foxcroft
Download or read book Plant Invasions in Protected Areas written by Llewellyn C. Foxcroft and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive global review of all aspects of alien plant invasions in protected areas. It provides insights into advances in invasion ecology emanating from work in protected areas, and the link to locally relevant management support for protected areas. The book provides in-depth case studies, illuminating interesting and insightful knowledge that can be shared across the global protected area network. The book includes the collective understanding of 80 ecologists and managers to extract as much information as possible that will support the long-term management of protected areas, and the biodiversity and associated ecosystem services they maintain. “This outstanding volume draws together pretty much all that can be said on this topic, ranging from the science, through policy, to practical action”. Dr. Simon N. Stuart, IUCN Species Survival Commission, UK. "This important and timely volume addresses two of the most serious problems affecting biodiversity conservation today: assessing the extent to which protected areas are impacted by biological invasions and the complex problems of managing these impacts. Written by leading specialists, it provides a comprehensive overview of the issues and gives detailed examples drawn from protected areas across the world". Professor Vernon H. Heywood, School of Biological Sciences, University of Reading, UK

Book Synopsis The economics of biological invasions by : Charles Perrings, Silvana Dalmazzone, Mark Herbert Williamson
Download or read book The economics of biological invasions written by Charles Perrings, Silvana Dalmazzone, Mark Herbert Williamson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000-08-25 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An interesting book catering perhaps for a more specific audience. It does however provide a somewhat new view of the problems of the field of biological invasions and is worth the effort.' - Ann Sundqvist, M2 Best Books 'Once again, Charles Perrings and colleagues have broken new ground by applying economic and ecological analysis to the very real problem of biological invasions. This is path-breaking work in what promises to be a new sub-discipline within environmental economics.' - David Pearce, University College London, UK Biological invasions - the introduction of living organisms beyond their original range - are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss. They are a major threat to human health and a source of pests and pathogens in the world's farms, forests and fisheries. The growth of international trade and travel means that more species are being introduced to more places than ever before. This book represents the first concerted effort to understand the economic causes and consequences of biological invasions. The volume discusses the theoretical and methodological issues raised by invasion, including control strategies, modelling options, and a study of the economic, institutional and policy conditions that predispose countries to biological invasions. Also included are case studies of fisheries, agricultural systems, tropical forests and protected areas affected by invasive species in locations such as the Black Sea, Australia and Africa, and an evaluation of control programmes.

Book Synopsis Impact of Forestland Tenure Changes in Amani Nature Reserve, Tanzania by : Mpanda Mathew
Download or read book Impact of Forestland Tenure Changes in Amani Nature Reserve, Tanzania written by Mpanda Mathew and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sub-Saharan Africa most of forestlands were placed under the state control following colonial disposition, but this paradigm changed in 1990s in favour of decentralization to create stake to the rural poor and the marginalized that live adjacent to the forests. Despite the much publicized decentralization, a subject debate still exists on which is the best tenure regime among state, private and common. The central pillar underlying this debate can be scrutinized in three dimensions of forest resources, livelihoods and governance. This book showcases one case study in the East Usambara Mountains, where forestland tenure changes occurred from private to the state in contrary to the prevailing paradigm of decentralization. Forest cover, stocking levels and tree diversity were analysed to entail status of the forest condition under the new tenure regime. The lessons drawn by this work can help forest professionals, conservation experts and anyone else who is interested in forest conservation understand complexity in forestland tenure especially in areas where there is both high biodiversity and high human population density.
