Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Resources of New Hampshire Through the mcsweeney-mcnary Act of 1928, Congress authorized the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a comprehensive survey of the forest resources of the United States. This work was assigned to the Forest Service. The purposes of this forest survey are (1) to make a field inventory of the present supply of standing timber; (2) to ascertain its current rate of growth, (3) to determine how much it is being reduced through industrial and domestic uses, fire, and other causes, (4) to estimate the present consumption and the probable future trends in requirements for forest products, and (5) to interpret and cor relate these findings so that they may be useful in formulating private and public forest policies. Results of this first comprehensive survey of the forest resources of New Hampshire are reported here. However, other estimates of the State 3 forest inventory have been made in the past, the most recent being the Reappraisal of 1945, which was made by the Forest Service in cooperation with the American Forestry Associa ion These previous estimates were based largely on general knowledge and on the judgment of informed persons; the present survey is based on a scientifically designed procedure using aerial photographs and ground plots. Furthermore, some specifications used in this report are different from those used in previous studies. For these reasons changes in forest conditions in New Hampshire cannot be determined by comparing this report with previ ous estimates. Valid comparisons of changing forest conditions in New Hampshire will be possible when the same area is resurveyed in the future. The statement in the text is based, partly upon general observation, and partly upon actual measurements of fallen trees and counts of their an nual rings of increase. As an instance of such measurements and enumera tions, I cite the diameters, number of annual rings and average annual increase of forty white pine logs, twenty of chestnut, twenty of red oak, and five of hemlock, all of which grew upon lands in the vicinity of Concord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of New Hampshire Field work for the initial survey was done entirely by the staff of the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station; the resurvey was a joint effort with the staff of the White Mountain National Forest. The National Forest personnel assumed responsibility for the resurvey of forest lands under their jurisdiction. The timber-supply outlook for the state and the demands for timber products have changed considerably. This report describes the current forest-land area and timber volumes and important changes or possible trends. Detailed statistical information and definitions of the terms used are presented in an Appendix. Users of the data in this report are cautioned to read with care the precise definitions of the terms used, the description of the forest-survey methods, and the statements pertaining to the reliability of the estimates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woody Plants of New Hampshire Of the very considerable number of trees and shrubs which are native to other parts of the world and which have been planted in New Hamp shire, only those species have been included which tend to escape and become naturalized or which have been observed to grow under such conditions that they might appear to be native. Shrubs or trees persisting around old deserted houses, cemeteries, etc., are accepted only if they have displayed an aggressive tendency to reproduce either by vegetative means or by seeds. The following brief geographical discussion may make the range-designa tions accompanying each taxon more meaningful. The White Mountains proper occupy an area from central Carroll and Grafton counties north to the Canadian border. The Presidential Range includes the highest peaks and is about in the center of the White Mountain area. These and the Franconia Range to the west of them are of sufficient elevation (above ft.) to have extensive alpine areas above the forest. Occasional small alpine areas occur elsewhere as noted below. Some of the other mountains have rocky summits, probably because the original forest-cover was re moved by fire. South of the White Mountains there are occasional peaks of moderate elevation, of which Mt. Monadnock in southwestern New Hampshire is the best known and highest. The principal rivers are the Androscoggin, Merrimack, Connecticut, and Saco, all of which have apparently served as migration - routes for many kinds of plants. There is, in addition to the above, a considerable number of small rivers emptying into Great Bay and the Piscataqua River in southeastern New Hampshire. The early modification of the Piscataqua River's tributary streams and of the Merrimack by constructing dams undoubtedly altered the vegetation to a considerable degree. This is particularly true of those plants which normally occur near the water - line. In more recent times the high dams of the upper Connecticut River have raised the water level for many miles back of them and thus have provided very uninteresting shores botanically speaking. In general, the flora along the river is much more interesting below the dams. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Trees Grow Where They Do in New Hampshire Forests Let's look first at water relations in the B horizons. These can be any of three characteristic conditions: Dry: You'll see no evidence of standing or moving water, and no gray, olive, or rusty mottled areas that indicate excess water. Moist: Look for water or mottles in the mid to lower 8 horizons. Wet: These will be flat, wet areas where the B horizons are gray or heavily mottled. The next distinction to make in the B horizons is the presence or absence of enrichment. Determine which of the following descriptions best fits the loca tion you are examining: Enriched areas include coves, benches or other places where deposits collect. The B horizons here are dark brown due to heavy organic matter content. Very often, the A2 horizon is either absent or just barely in evidence. The soil can be either dry or moist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry in New England: Revised Throughout America and especially in the eastern United States there has been a rapid awakening of interest in forestry during the past few years. The disappearance of old forests, together with increased prices of lumber, has made ready converts to the forestry propaganda of the federal and state governments; but up to the present time nearly the only available literature on the subject is in the form of government bulletins. There are, to be sure, a number of good books on the trees written from a botanical standpoint, and several books dealing with forestry in a general way, besides a very few advanced textbooks. There is now such widespread interest in the subject, that a book dealing with the specific forestry problems of New England will not only be of interest to the nature lover but of real assistance to the land owner who wishes to adopt approved methods of forest culture, or to the student of forestry. Books are legion dealing with specific agricultural problems, and it is intended that this work shall be for the woodland owner what these are for the agriculturist. Every year more people are moving from the cities and acquiring country places. Many owners of this class cannot afford their personal time for farm supervision, and, without this supervision of the owner, farming is apt to be too expensive. Forestry particularly appeals to this class of owners because it requires less frequent attention than any other land culture. It is gratifying to find that the farmers are taking up forestry in the same practical way in which they are accustomed to handle other problems, and the authors frequently have been asked by farmers to recommend some good book on forestry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Wilds: A Record of Sport and Adventure in the Forests of New Hampshire and Maine View IN boston harbor sation both interesting and amus ing, judging from their earnestness and the hearty peals of laughter that were occasionally wafted to the bystanders. With an author's license, we will play eavesdropper for a few moments, while taking a mental survey of them. They are American boys, well dressed, with bright and intelligent faces, and their ages apparently from fifteen to eighteen. Quarter past eight, exclaimed the youngest, taking out a nice silver watch and referring to it: in fifteen minutes more we shall be afloat on the briny deep. We are now, Dick, returned the eldest, laughing, for the water under us is briny, and deep also. High tide, you know. Don't catch a fellow up so quick, George; if you begin that sort of thing now, and propose to continue it during the trip, we shall bury you somewhere in the wilds, and return without you, and Dick gave his elder friend a good-natured poke in the ribs. The young gentlemen thus brought to our notice have long been friends, and are to take a summer vacation together in New England, and have already resolved to spend the most of it in the woods.
