Book excerpt: The role of forests in mitigating the effect of climate change depends on the carbon sequestration potential and management. This study was conducted to estimate the carbon stock and its variation along the environmental gradients in Arba Minch Ground Water Forest. The data was collected from the field by measuring plants with a DBH of >5cm in quadrat plots of 10 X 20 m and the carbon stocks of each plant were analyzed by using allometric equations. From this study the mean total carbon stock density of Arba Minch Ground Water Forest was found to be 583.27 t ha-1, of which 829.12 t ha-1, 165.88 t ha-1, 1.28 t ha-1, 83.80 t ha-1 was contained in the above ground carbon, belowground carbon, litter carbon and soil organic carbon (0-30 cm depth) respectively. This study will serve as a potential entry point for the engagement of the forest in REDD project.

Understanding the role of natural ecosystems in carbon storage is an important part of solving the climate change problem. This report presents a landscape-wide green carbon account of the `Great Western Woodlands¿ (GWW), sixteen million hectares of mostly contiguous natural woody vegetation to the east of the wheatbelt in south-western Western Australia. For the first time, we provide an overview of the vegetation structure, climate, geology and historical land use of the GWW, and examine how these interact to affect the carbon dynamics of this region¿s landscape ecosystems. An analysis of time-series of satellite imagery is used to develop a fire history of the GWW since the 1970s. These layers of environmental information, along with field survey data and remotely sensed greenness, are used to construct a spatial model to estimate biomass carbon stocks of the woodlands at the present day, and to infer an upper limit to the carbon sequestration potential of the GWW. A range of management options to enable protection of high quality carbon stocks and restoration of degraded stocks are evaluated.

Book excerpt: To achieve goals for climate and economic growth, "negative emissions technologies" (NETs) that remove and sequester carbon dioxide from the air will need to play a significant role in mitigating climate change. Unlike carbon capture and storage technologies that remove carbon dioxide emissions directly from large point sources such as coal power plants, NETs remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or enhance natural carbon sinks. Storing the carbon dioxide from NETs has the same impact on the atmosphere and climate as simultaneously preventing an equal amount of carbon dioxide from being emitted. Recent analyses found that deploying NETs may be less expensive and less disruptive than reducing some emissions, such as a substantial portion of agricultural and land-use emissions and some transportation emissions. In 2015, the National Academies published Climate Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration, which described and initially assessed NETs and sequestration technologies. This report acknowledged the relative paucity of research on NETs and recommended development of a research agenda that covers all aspects of NETs from fundamental science to full-scale deployment. To address this need, Negative Emissions Technologies and Reliable Sequestration: A Research Agenda assesses the benefits, risks, and "sustainable scale potential" for NETs and sequestration. This report also defines the essential components of a research and development program, including its estimated costs and potential impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terrestrial biosphere is responsible for removing roughly one quarter of the total anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This process is dominated by the forests. The terrestrial portion of the global carbon cycle is also the most uncertain. Growing forests are a major sink of CO2 while deforestation contributes as a major source of CO2. While the locations of deforestation can be tracked with remote sensing data relatively well, the amount of carbon removed is not well known due to the lack of knowledge on the biomass density of the forests that were disturbed. Spatially explicit distribution of carbon stocks in global forests can greatly reduce this uncertainty by improving estimates of emissions from land use activities. It will also help with green house gas inventory at regional and national scales. Increasing amounts of remote sensing based forest studies are being conducted, however, there is currently no global spatially explicit map of forest biomass/carbon. This dissertation aims to address that by producing the first global spatially explicit map of live biomass and carbon stock in forests and other living woody vegetation at ~1 km resolution for circa year 2005. A combination of remote sensing data from the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) are used to provide wall-to-wall spatial information. Ground inventory and LiDAR from the Geosciences Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) onboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) are used to create a global network of aboveground biomass (AGB) samples. Landcover map based on the GlobCover product from the European Space Agency (ESA) is used as ancillary data. These are combined in a statistical model using Maximum Entropy to create the first global map of AGB and total carbon stock (above + below ground) in living biomass. Uncertainty at the pixel level is also produced alongside the above products. The total global carbon in live woody vegetation is estimated at 337 PgC, with 311.4 PgC being in the forests (92% of total) for circa year 2005, compared with 302.8 PgC in total global live forest biomass as reported in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's 2010 Forest Resources Assessment report (FRA 2010). Shrublands and savannas account for the other 25.6 PgC (8% of total) globally. National carbon stocks are calculated and reported for all the countries using several different thresholds for forest cover.

REDD ("reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation") is now part of the agenda for the "Bali Action Plan" being debated in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate change conference in 2009. Currently, international rules are blind to the colour of carbon so that the green carbon in natural forests is not recognized, resulting in perverse outcomes including ongoing deforestation and forest degradation, and the conversion of extensive areas of land to industrial plantations. This report examines REDD policy from a green carbon scientific perspective. Subsequent reports will focus on issues concerning the carbon sequestration potential of commercially logged natural forests, methods for monitoring REDD, and the long term implications of forest policy and management for the global carbon cycle and climate change.
