Book excerpt: One of the deadliest firefights in the history of the FBI occurred in 1986 in Miami, Florida. Lasting more than four minutes, the fight claimed the lives of two FBI agents and two extremely violent master criminals and severely injured five other FBI agents. On the 10th anniversary of the shootout, W. French Anderson, M.D., released his seminal study, "Forensic Analysis of the April 11, 1986, FBI Firefight". Anderson's report - the most well-researched, well-documented account of a gunfight in modern history - was available only to law enforcement personnel . . . until now. On the 20th anniversary of the firefight that revolutionized the way law enforcement agencies around the nation arm and train their agents, Dr. Anderson makes "Forensic Analysis" available to the public for the first time.

Some have been incarcerated for decades and their outlook on life, their crimes and what purpose they might have was discussed in detail with interesting and sometimes unusual results. “Care is just a word until someone like Briar comes along and gives it true life.” - Monk Steppenwolf, serving a life sentence in Michigan for killing five people in 1964 “You have extraordinary heart to what you’ve done. You’ve gone, along, into prisons and interviewed what most people would consider to be the most dangerous class of criminals and that not to trash them, but to give them a voice. You are, of course, awesome…” - Bernard Eugene Giles, incarcerated for life in Florida for murdering five women in the 1970s “Briar Lee Mitchell strips away the sad labels that our society clings to by speaking directly to those who live next door, and walk side by side with us on city streets. She provides absolute proof what when pushed to the edge anybody can become the ‘Breaking News’ and shows that empathy and compassion is the only way to prevent the next tragedy. We can all benefit from learning what sets a person off and possibly preventing the next bloodbath. Briar, I hope you accept my truth and thank you for allowing me to share my growth as a human being with you.” - Respectfully, Scott E. Dekraai, The Seal Beach Killer “A different kind of Project, Briar Lee Mitchell shines a light on They and Me – SKs of past with Darkened Pathways. - Dennis L. Rader, A.K.A., BTK – Bind, Torture, Kill, serial killer incarcerated in Kansas “There are trees in the FOREST.” - Keith Hunter Jesperson, The Happy Face Killer, incarcerated in Oregon

As a selective reference, the volume emphasizes practical issues and focuses on the most commonly encountered issues among neuropathology and medical examiner professionals. * Over 800 high-quality full-color photographs, gross and microscopic as well as illustrative line drawings * Use of actual cases, briefly summarized and illustrated to emphasize key principles * Focuses on the most-commonly encountered cases as relate to forensic incident and covers these aspects in depth and detail

Book excerpt: Twentieth-century war is a unique cultural phenomenon and the last two decades have seen significant advances in our ability to conceptualize and understand the past and the character of modern technological warfare. At the forefront of these developments has been the re-appraisal of the human body in conflict, from the ethics of digging up First World War bodies for television programmes to the contentious political issues surrounding the reburial of Spanish Civil War victims, the relationships between the war body and material culture (e.g. clothing, and prostheses), ethnicity and identity in body treatment, and the role of the ‘body as bomb’ in Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond. Focused on material culture, Bodies in Conflict revitalizes investigations into the physical and symbolic worlds of modern conflict and that have defined us as subjects through memory, imagination, culture and technology. The chapters in this book present an interdisciplinary approach which draws upon, but does not privilege archaeology, anthropology, military and cultural history, art history, cultural geography, and museum and heritage studies. The complexity of modern conflict demands a coherent, integrated, and sensitized hybrid approach which calls on different disciplines where they overlap in a shared common terrain - that of the materiality of conflict and its aftermath in relation to the human body. Bodies in Conflict brings together the diverse interests and expertise of a host of disciplines to create a new intellectual engagement with our corporeal nature in times of conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the law enforcement officer and the civilian who may be in a situation that requires the use of a handgun to stop a lethal threat action, it is important that the person differentiates between the crass, glib and self-serving advertisements of ammunition vendors and the reality of how, what and why effective stopping power occurs. Factors to consider are the physiological response, the psychological response, the time frame parameter and bullet efficacy. Of these four factors, only bullet efficacy can be somewhat controlled by the person, this only by understanding how and to what extent the bullet contributes to the degree of stopping power obtained. A number of concepts / formulae have been included so as to permit the reader to consider their merits and whether or not they are consistent with the reality of biology, physics and other relevant sciences. Finally the material in this book is intended to permit those persons to instruct, teach or make decisions regarding the selection of a service handgun/cartridge combination that will help to provide the means to prevail in a lethal threat confrontation. About the Author: Mr. Bredsten retired from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center/Firearms Division (FLETC/FAD). With FLETC/FAD he performed duties as a firearms instructor and he also taught ballistics to the FLETC/FAD staff and to students in the Law Enforcement Rifle Training Program and in the Precision Rifle (Sniper) and Observer Program. Subjects covered included the ballistic coefficient, barrel time, the coefficient of reduction (form), Greenhill formula (rate of rifling twist), firearm recoil, bullet time-of-flight, bullet drop, bullet midrange, wind deflection, bullet penetration potential and bullet terminal (wounding) efficacy. Since retiring he has provided ballistics consultation service for the FLETC/FAD, the Transportation Security Agency, the Orange County (Florida) Sheriff's Department and Exxon Mobil Corporation. Mr. Bredsten attended and completed various classes/courses relating to firearms (e.g., H&K MP5, Steyr Aug, Uzi, Tactical Speed Shooting and advanced shotgun) and ballistics (e.g., the first and second International Wound Ballistics Conferences, a Federal Law Enforcement Ammunition and Ballistics Seminar and Oehler's Ballistic Instrumentation). Mr. Bredsten has an AA degree from Chaffey Jr. College and a BA degree from Sacramento State College and currently resides in Georgia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were brutally murdered at her home on Bundy Drive in Brentwood, California, on the night of June 12, 1994. The days and weeks that followed were full of spectacle, including a much-watched car chase and the eventual arrest of O. J. Simpson for the murders. The televised trial that followed was unlike any that the nation had ever seen. Long since convinced of O. J.’s guilt, the world was shocked when the jury of the “trial of the century” read the verdict of not guilty. To this day, the LAPD, Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, mainstream media, and much of the world at large remain firmly convinced that O. J. Simpson got away with murder. According to private investigator William Dear, it is precisely this assuredness that has led both the police and public to overlook a far more likely suspect. Dear now compiles more than seventeen years of investigation by his team of forensic experts and presents evidence that O. J. was not the killer. In O. J. Is Innocent and I Can Prove It, Dear makes the controversial, but compelling, case that it may have been the “overlooked suspect,” O. J.’s eldest son, Jason, who committed the grisly murders. Sure to stir the pot and raise some eyebrows, this book is a must-read.

Explores whether sufficient data exists to examine the temporal and spatial relationships that existed in terrorist group planning, and if so, could patterns of preparatory conduct be identified? About one-half of the terrorists resided, planned, and prepared for terrorism relatively close to their eventual target. The terrorist groups existed for 1,205 days from the first planning meeting to the date of the actual/planned terrorist incident. The planning process for specific acts began 2-3 months prior to the terrorist incident. This study examined selected terrorist groups/incidents in the U.S. from 1980-2002. It provides for the potential to identify patterns of conduct that might lead to intervention prior to the commission of the actual terrorist incidents. Illustrations.
