This book was released on 1993-10-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dilemma facing Argentina after Pern's overthrow in 1955: how to consolidate a liberal-democratic republic after the breakdown of the old corporatist regime, when the necessary values and traditions had been eroded? Frondizi's, and his chief advisor Frigerio's, developmentalist style - a mixture of sheer voluntarism and undemocratic behaviour - and his abandonment of life-long principles, reinforced public suspicions of politics, marking in 1962 the beginning of a new cycle of military interventions that became the main feature of Argentine politics for the next two decades.

Book Synopsis Latin American Revolutionaries and the Arab World by : Federico Vélez
Download or read book Latin American Revolutionaries and the Arab World written by Federico Vélez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recounting recent encounters between Latin American and Arab countries this unique volume explores how, despite both geographical and cultural distances, Latin American revolutionaries constructed an image of the Arab World as one sharing their own political views and interests. From the nationalization of the Suez Canal to Latin American perspectives on the Arab Spring Federico Vélez offers a fascinating historical and contemporary analysis on the behaviour of actors on the periphery of the international system. Contributing to debates regarding ideological and political autonomy the book provides a comprehensive historical account of relations between the countries of Latin America and the Middle East alongside new analysis on the ways marginalized states can sometimes build unlikely alliances in their attempts to challenge structures of power.
Book Synopsis The Handbook of Latin American and Caribbean Intelligence Cultures by : Florina Cristiana Matei
Download or read book The Handbook of Latin American and Caribbean Intelligence Cultures written by Florina Cristiana Matei and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Latin American and Caribbean Intelligence Cultures explores the contemporary efforts of Latin American and Caribbean nations to develop an intelligence culture. Specifically, it analyzes these countries’ efforts to democratize their intelligence agencies (i.e. to develop intelligence services that are both transparent and effective) to convert the former military regimes’ repressive security apparatuses into democratic intelligence communities—a rather paradoxical task, considering that democracy calls for political neutrality, transparency, and accountability, while effective intelligence services must operate in secrecy. Indeed, even the most successful democracies face this conundrum of democracy and intelligence; Latin America and the Caribbean region is not alone in facing this challenge. The legacy of the repressive military regimes or brutal civil wars—which have inspired in the public a general disdain toward intelligence services due to the grave human rights abuses—coupled with politicians’ persistent lack of interest or expertise in intelligence matters complicate the region’s quest for a proper balance between the competing demands of democracy and intelligence. This volume details the attempts of the region’s countries to overcome these obstacles and pursue democratic intelligence institution building—transforming the legal basis for intelligence; establishing democratic control and oversight mechanisms; and fostering intelligence openness, transparency, and outreach.

Book Synopsis The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 by : Robert Austin
Download or read book The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 written by Robert Austin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular education and adult literacy movements in Chile have historically represented competing paths toward a literate society: one born and nurtured through bitter nineteenth-century labor struggles, the other a compensatory effort by the modern state to limit the political potential of literacy. Robert Austin's book explores the contest between the state and popular education in three paradigmatic Latin American regimes: that of Eduardo Frei Montalva (Christian Democrat, 1964-70), Salvador Allende (Socialist, 1970-73) and Augusto Pinochet (Dictator, 1973-90). Robert Austin's engaging narrative captures the relationship between the Chilean state, formal and non-formal literacy, and popular education, from the demise of liberal capitalism to the consolidation of neoliberalism. This remarkable investigation of the dynamic link between the historical process, literacy, and pedagogy celebrates popular education's victory in securing the inclusion, and subsequent empowerment, of women and ethnic minorities. The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 will be of great interest to political scientists, cultural historians, and scholars of education.
