Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions After a Century These lectures were delivered in the spring of 1893, before the faculty and students of Princeton Theological Seminary, on the basis of the newly established Students' Lectureship on Missions, being the first course delivered on that foundation. The second lecture has been extended to double its original length, in order to give a fuller survey of the world's Macedonian appeal than was possible within the usual limits of a single lecture. Otherwise the course is printed substantially as prepared for delivery, except that some passages here and there which were omitted for the sake of brevity have been retained, and some later facts of interest have been inserted. No attempt has been made to present a comprehensive thesaurus of striking episodes in the course of missionary history. I suppose, were this to be done, not even the world itself could contain the books that should be written. The incidents and characters described, gleaned from many sources, may not transcend in interest or importance multitudes not here included. These have been chosen as typical and significant. They are set forth in the belief that, however familiar, they will serve afresh as a tonic to our faith and to our devotion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions: Their Relations and Claims The work now offered to the Christian public had its origin in a series of Lectures on Foreign Missions, delivered in the Theological Seminary at Andover, under appointment from the Trus tees; and subsequently, by request, before the Theological Seminaries at Bangor, Hartford, Auburn, and Princeton, and the Union Semi nary in New York City. It was fitting that the oldest of our theological seminaries, and the first to send missionaries into foreign heathen lands, should take the lead in establishing, for its students, a permanent Lectureship on For eign Missions. This was created by a vote of the Trustees early in the year 1866; and the needful pecuniary endowment was secured to the Seminary by henry H. Hyde, Esq, a citizen of Boston. The statutes of the endowment re quire the course to embrace as many as ten lectures; but it is left for the Trustees to de cide, whether they shall be delivered annually. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions Year Book of North America, 1919 The Foreign Missions Year Book of North America is issued to meet an oft expressed need for a volume which would bring together annually, for mention at least, the chief events and the main developments that have marked the missionary movement during the year. Recognizing the need for such a volume, the Foreign Missions Confer ence of North America at its meeting at Garden City in January, 1918, committed the question, with power, to the Committee of Reference and Counsel. After due investiga tion, this Committee charged its sub Committee on the Missionary Research Library in collaboration with the Director of the Statistical Bureau, Mr. Burton St. John, to prepare and issue such a volume. The present volume admittedly falls far short of the ideals of its editors. The fact that it is the first of the series, with all that this involves of unavoidable experiment; the further fact that the absorbing claims Of war service limited greatly the time which its editors could contribute to this labor of love; and, finally, the necessity of limiting the volume to certain dimensions of size because Of cost, - these all serve to explain limitations and imperfections, even deliberate omissions, which another year may help to remedy. The aim has been a world - wide survey of all of the main foreign missionary events and developments Of the year 1918. Yet, while world-wide in its outlook, the survey is intended to preserve an American viewpoint, emphasizing such facts as affect more vitally North American missionary interests and activities. Furthermore the desire to make the volume readable and to avoid the impression of a mere enumeration of events, has mad it necessary to sacrifice the mention of many most interesting although minor missionary events. As the volume went to press the first Of December, events Of that month could not be included. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses on Foreign Missions: Delivered Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions So many requests have been made to the officers of the Board by those interested in its work for the publication of this series of ad. Dresses, of which only three have been printed in pamphlet form, that, with the consent of Dr. Storrs, they are now brought together in the present form - in the hope that, with God's blessing, they may quicken and widen interest in the great cause which they were designed to serve. It is confidently believed that the powerful impressions produced when these addresses were first delivered, at a critical period in the history of the Board, will be lrevived in many who heard them, and that others now and in coming years will read them with profit and delight, as among the best specimens of sacred eloquence employed upon the noblest of themes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions Year Book of North America, 1920: Covering the Year 1919 The Foreign Missions Year Book of North America for 1919, issued by the Committee of Reference and Counsel by order Of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America, received such an appreciative welcome that the entire edition was exhausted in a surprisingly short time, and all through the year applications were received for additional copies which could not be supplied. This was a gratifying return for the laborious task involved in assembling, from SO wide a range, the record of such a variety of facts and classifying the material for ready reference in the initial volume of what it is hoped may prove to be a continuous series reaching far into the future. Its varied and inclusive content, its brevity Of statement, its accuracy Of detail seem to serve a growing demand of this busy, progressive and increasingly scientific age. In the evolution Of the Kingdom of Christ, the various branches of the Church and the different peoples of the World are drawing closer together. Every ethical organization is becoming interested in Similar organizations and their activities and accomplishments are matters of concern to all others. Therefore, the demand for such a compilation seems to be a normal one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secular Press and Foreign Missions It is true that the Press has its well defined limita tions. Perhaps the best it can do for education, te ligion, and social reform is to clear the way and to create an atmosphere for the leaders to whom has come the Vision and the Whisper and the Power. So much as that the newspaper may do and, as it seems to me, it is its duty deliberately and intelligently to undertake. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Workers Are Few: Reflections Upon Vocation to the Foreign Missions And unto all nations the gospel must first be preached. Marl: 10. The most important problem that should interest every truly Christian soul is, without a doubt, that Of the extension of the kingdom of God on earth. Twenty centuries have passed since our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, in these solemn words, All power is given to me in heaven and in earth; Going therefore teach ye all nations,1 entrusted to His Church the great and glorious mission of the con version Of the world. Twenty centuries have also passed since the Church, faithful to the mission which she has received through a long line Of mar tyrs and triumphs, began to labor for the extension of this divine Kingdom on earth. The story of the Church is but one magnificent realization of those words of her divine Founder, Teach ye all nations. This command has lost none Of its original force with the passing years. It is as strong to-day in all its fullness as it was in Christ's Own time, and will remain so, as long as there are people to instruct. Is it not true that until recently the Roman Catholic Church alone possessed the imperial vision of the universal domin ion of our Lord and sought to make that vision a reality? It surveyed the world and sought to extend its form of Christianity from the rivers to the ends of the earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Messages As indicated by the title, this book is, for the most part, composed of missionary messages which have been delivered by the author on various occasions. They are issued in the present form for the single purpose that they were at first delivered orally, namely, to quicken interest in Foreign Missions. In the main they have to do with Foreign Missions as a common Christian enterprise, but at points they deal specifically with the Baptist foreign mission program. There was in the delivery and there is here no disposition to evade the distinctive views and policies which characterize Southern Baptists and control their foreign mission work. An effort has been made to state the denominational viewpoint as inoffensively as frankly, and to use this to strengthen the foreign mission motive. No man ought to hold a religious opinion or alliance of which he is ashamed. Neither should one state his personal or denominational views in irreligious spirit or manner. Thoughtful men will agree that the only certain course to better understanding, mutual respect and concord among the Christian forces which are engaged In this commanding world enterprise of Foreign Missions is for each group to state with proper Christian decorum those views and principles which it holds and would have obtain in the conduct of the work and thus allow others to examine these on their merit. Respect of one Christian denomination for another will be promoted and that Christian unity, about which so much is said in foreign mission circles, will be the more certainly realized by clear and frank confession rather than by sentimental slurring of the comparatively few points of difference between the evangelical forces of Christendom.
