Book Synopsis Foreign Investment and Spillovers (Routledge Revivals) by : Magnus Blomstrom
Download or read book Foreign Investment and Spillovers (Routledge Revivals) written by Magnus Blomstrom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spillover effect of multinational companies has, historically, been subject to much debate. The assumption that the host country can be expected to enjoy spillovers – improvements in the balance of payments, in the influx of foreign currency and in other sectors of the economy not directly affected by the multinational – has not necessarily been corroborated in practice. First published in 1989, this book addresses this debate, and the very different conclusions that can be drawn about spillovers. Reporting on significant research on Latin America and drawing comparisons with findings elsewhere, Foreign Investment and Spillovers provides students and researchers with a truly international perspective.

Book Synopsis Integration Through Foreign Direct Investment by : Gábor Hunya
Download or read book Integration Through Foreign Direct Investment written by Gábor Hunya and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunya (research economist at The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies) explores whether foreign direct investment can contribute to the competitiveness of industries in central Europe and to narrowing the gap between these transition economies and countries within the European Union. Examining empirical data from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia, he argues that foreign investment enterprises have higher allocative efficiency, promote macro- and microeconomic restructuring, and foster the restructuring of the manufacturing sector in accordance with the host countries' comparative advantages. Some negative factors are explored, but Hunya argues that, on the whole, foreign direct investment leads to greater competitiveness. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This book was released on 2008 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the role of structural reforms -financial reforms, trade liberalization, and privatization- as determinants of FDI inflows based on newly constructed dataset on structural reforms for 19 Latin American and 25 Eastern European countries between 1989 and 2004. Our main finding is a strong empirical relationship from reforms to FDI, in particular, from financial liberalization and privatization. These results are robust to different measures of reforms, split samples, and potential endogeneity and omitted variables biases.

This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 1596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management is sponsored by the Chinese Industrial Engineering Institution, CMES, which is the only national-level academic society for Industrial Engineering. The conference is held annually as the major event in this arena. Being the largest and the most authoritative international academic conference held in China, it provides an academic platform for experts and entrepreneurs in the areas of international industrial engineering and management to exchange their research findings. Many experts in various fields from China and around the world gather together at the conference to review, exchange, summarize and promote their achievements in the fields of industrial engineering and engineering management. For example, some experts pay special attention to the current state of the application of related techniques in China as well as their future prospects, such as green product design, quality control and management, supply chain and logistics management to address the need for, amongst other things low-carbon, energy-saving and emission-reduction. They also offer opinions on the outlook for the development of related techniques. The proceedings offers impressive methods and concrete applications for experts from colleges and universities, research institutions and enterprises who are engaged in theoretical research into industrial engineering and engineering management and its applications. As all the papers are of great value from both an academic and a practical point of view, they also provide research data for international scholars who are investigating Chinese style enterprises and engineering management.
Book Synopsis Structural Reforms, Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America by : Jorge M. Katz
Download or read book Structural Reforms, Productivity and Technological Change in Latin America written by Jorge M. Katz and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years, profound structural reforms have moved Latin America and the Caribbean from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market-oriented and open. Policymakers expected that these changes would speed up growth. This book is part of a multi-year project to determine whether these expectation have been fulfilled. Focusing on technological change, the impact of the reforms on the process of innovation is examined. It notes that the development process is proving to be highly heterogenous across industries, regions and firms and can be described as strongly inequitable. This differentiation that has emerged has implications for job creation, trade balance, and the role of small and medium sized firms. This ultimately suggests, amongst other things, the need for policies to better spread the use of new technologies.

A special focus is placed this time around on the difference between exposure and vulnerability to exogenous shocks, with the latter assessed by adjusting exposure for a country’s shock absorption policy capacity. Given the global context and associated concerns with capital flow volatility, in Chapter 2 we take a look at the comparatively more stable components of international flows: FDI and Remittances. The cyclicality and volatility, as well as the joint determinants of FDI and Remittances are reviewed.

It discusses which policies work best in influencing the behaviour of MNEs and how developing countries compete with one another for multinational investment. It argues that the tax regimes of different countries rarly deter investors but that nationalisation acts as a powerful disincentive. It also concludes that governments should not be expected to sacrifice the environment to attract multinationals.
