Yet, comprehensive and comparable data on FXI is hard to find. This paper provides a new dataset of FXI covering a large number of countries over the period 2000-20 at monthly and quarterly frequencies. It includes publicly available data for about 40 countries and carefully constructed proxies for 122 countries. Proxies are focused on both spot and derivative transactions that alter the central bank’s foreign currency position and account for a wide range of central bank operations, including vis-à-vis residents, the first proxy to do so to our knowledge. The paper discusses the merits of the new proxy relative to coarser measures traditionally used like the change in reserves, and potential definitional differences with published data. The paper also presents stylized facts using our newly constructed FXI proxies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange in Accounts: Dealing With the Treatment in Accounts of the Foreign Exchange in General, and Showing How the Foreign Accounts Are Amalgamated With the Home Accounts; Organisation; Banking and Other Arrangements, System of Returns and Other Practical Information This little work is the result of various notes made from time to time in practice both at home and abroad upon the treatment and effect of the foreign exchanges in the accounts of undertakings concerned in the working of businesses and concessions in foreign lands and accounting matters generally in relation thereto. Excluding numerous firms and single ventures, the number of companies registered in the British Islands and carrying on businesses abroad with capital subscribed by the British public is enormous and increases year by year, whilst the work of organising and installing systems of account in branch houses abroad, and the audit of the business operations is of undoubted and growing importance. To commercial students, bookkeepers, accountants and others, therefore, a practical acquaintance with the currencies in which the foreign books are kept, the organisation of the accounting, the manner in which transactions are to be advised periodically to the London or registered office, their assimilation with the home accounts, and the drafting of the final accounts, balance sheets and profit and loss accounts, becomes indispensable. Many professionals face demands to evaluate the implications of developments and policies for their business, financial, or public policy decisions. Macroeconomics for Professionals provides a concise, rigorous, yet intuitive framework for assessing a country's macroeconomic outlook and policies. Drawing on years of experience at the International Monetary Fund, Leslie Lipschitz and Susan Schadler have created an operating manual for professional applied economists and all those required to evaluate economic analysis.

Book excerpt: The book presents all major subjects in international monetary theory, foreign exchange markets, international financial management and investment analysis. The book is relevant to real world problems in the sense that it provides guidance on how to solve policy issues as well as practical management tasks. This in turn helps the reader to gain an understanding of the theory and refines the framework. Various topics are interlinked so the book adopts a systematic treatment of integrated materials relating different theories under various circumstances and combining theory with practice. The text examines issues in international monetary policy and financial management in a practical way, focusing on the identification of the factors and players in foreign exchange markets and the international finance arena. The book can be used in graduate and advanced undergraduate programmes in international or global finance, international monetary economics, and international financial management.
