Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agricultural Extension Activities: Mexico, Bavaria, Finland, Switzerland In 1926 the higher authorities of the Office of the Secretary of Education thought it was time to give organic form to this idea of cul - tural missions, and six groups of teachers Board of Cultural were organized to work permanently according Missions to a concrete and definite prograi. At the same time a central office was created in the Office of the Secretary called the Board of Cultural Missions for the purpose of coordinating the work of these six groups of missionary teachers. At the head of the Board of Cultural Missions was placed a woman, an expert in social work and rural education, Who was in charge of the organization of the six missions which worked during 1926, the courses taken by the missioqaries during the first four months of the year, and thefbrmation of plans of work for the missions. The staff of each one of these missions was composed of the following;, A chief, in charge of classes of the theory of education with special reference to the organization and encouragement of rural schools; a teacher of agriculture to give practical instruction in gardening, fruit-growing and everything connected with agricultural activities; an instructor in.physical training in charge of the gymnasium, games and sports; and a social worker, to teach the rudimentary principles of medicine, needlework, cooking and everything tending to improve the hygienic and sanitary conditions in rural districts. There were also three teachers of small industries, who were not permanently enrolled in any one of the missions, but were moved from.one to the other according to the needs of the service, and gave instruction in tanning, soap - making, canning fruits and vegetables, apiculture, aviculture, sericulture, and making rustic furniture for the home and.the school.
