Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a concise guide dealing with the subject of air turbulence and its methods of detection with particular applications to aviation turbulence. It begins with a general description of turbulence and provides a background into the nature and causes of atmospheric turbulence that affect aircraft motion, giving updates on the state-of-the-art research on clear air turbulence (CAT). Important physical processes leading to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, a primary producer of CAT, are also explained. The several categories of CAT along with its impact on commercial aviation are also presented in a separate chapter, with particular emphasis on the structural damages to planes and injuries. The central theme of the book deals with both the earlier and the latest CAT detecting methods and techniques for remote and in situ sensing and forecasting. A concise presentation of new technologies for reducing aviation weather-related accidents is also offered. A chapter on the weather accident prevention project of the NASA aviation safety program is also included. Additionally, the book ends with a full description of the recent research activities on CAT and future challenges in turbulence detection, prediction and avoidance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screening multiple-discriminate analysis (MDA) is used to select specifiers for objectively analyzng clear-air turbulence (CAT) with the aid of an electronic computer. The data consist of a special 5-day collection of commercial and military aircraft reports of intensities of CAT and no CAT made by the Weather Bureau. In the analysis, volumes of space are classified with regard to CAT intensity for 6-hr intervals. The variables used to specify these classifications are obtained from 6- and 12-hourly radiosonde observations and upper-level charts. These include standard flow, shear, and stability parameters, both at the time of occurrence and for 6 hr prior to the occurrence. The MDA pro gram selected the height of the maximum wind level and the horizontal temperature gradient as the two specifiers best able to discriminate between categories of CAT. The significance of the selection of these specifiers in the light of the data sample used is discussed, and recommen dations are made for further work in turbulence, both in research and engineering areas. Book excerpt: Stratospheric Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) is a major challenge to the safety, controllability and flight path optimization of the Global Hawk, Predator and other Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Platforms. Optical Turbulence (OT) layers impact on the polarization and focusing of laser beams in communication systems and the Airborne Laser (ABL). The completed fundamental research project investigated the microscale physics of the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS), closely correlating field measurements, high resolution numerical simulations and nonlinear mathematics to explicitly resolve multiscale turbulent dynamics of polarized inertia-gravity waves in the UTLS region. High performance massively parallel codes for the fully compressible, nonhydrostatic 3D Navier-Stokes equations and advanced data analysis tools for atmospheric characterization were developed and validated. High resolution coupled mesoscale/microscale simulations were carried out to characterize patchy, nonhomogeneous, shear-stratified UTLS turbulence under representative local atmospheric conditions (jetstream and topography). The embedded microscale nests and adaptive vertical gridding near the tropopause fully resolved laminated turbulent structures, with localized shear gradients of vertical velocity and potential temperature in the UTLS region.

Book excerpt: There is much disagreement as to (1) what causes clear air turbulence (turbulence which is not in or near convective clouds and is above 15,000 feet in altitude) and (2) which meteorological parameters can be used to detect and forecast its occurrence. The approach to this problem has been to relate not one parameter to clear air turbulence but various parameters. By summing these parameters areas can be defined where there is a high probability of encountering clear air turbulence. Each parameter has been based on a statistical study which found a relationship with clear air turbulence. The parameters used were horizontal and vertical shear, curvature, kinetic energy and their derivatives. The numerical forecasting program proposed here can be extended to the stratosphere when more reliable height and temperature fields are available. This program will have much more significance when intermediate forecast height fields, temperature fields and a grid of much smaller mesh length are available. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clear-air turbulence (CAT) prediction is vitally important to military aviation and the successful completion of Department of Defense (DoD) operations such as air to air refueling and new national defensive weapon systems such as directed energy platforms. The unique mission requirements of military aircraft often require strict avoidance of turbulent regions. Traditionally, weather forecasters have found it difficult to accurately predict CAT. In order to forecast regions where CAT might occur, forecasters must first determine the location of breaking waves caused by either Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities or topographically forced internal gravity waves (mountain waves) in the atmosphere. The United States Air Force (USAF) 15th Operational Weather Squadron (15th OWS) requested an updated method of predicting CAT and this request was ranked as one of the highest priority research needs by the HQ USAF Director of Weather, Deputy Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations. A new method of forecasting turbulence was developed in this work and the operational model was delivered to the 15th OWS for immediate inclusion into their operations. This method combines output from the Knapp-Ellrod index and the Naval Research Laboratory s Mountain Wave Forecast Model (MWFM) onto a single chart. Displaying these tools together allows forecasters to view both causes of CAT simultaneously. Furthermore, a new visualization tool is developed that allows a forecaster to view several layers at the same time as well as a composite chart to greatly reduce the time required to produce turbulence charts by OWS forecasting centers worldwide. Tests of forecast accuracy, as determined by pilot reports (PIREPS), between charts currently produced by USAF OWSs and this new method were compared, with the new method producing far superior forecast results. This method revolutionizes

Book excerpt: Pilot reports of clear-air turbulence from four special five-day reporting periods are used to investigate relationships between turbulence probability and meteorological factors. The meteorological analyses are made by computer on a 2.5 degrees latitude/longitude grid, on the basis of standard upper-air observations. Analyses are made for the United States for altitude layers 50 mb (approximately 4000 ft) thick. Temperature analyses interpreted as thermal wind shear are used to compensate for wind observations missing in high-speed portions of the flow. The best meteorological indicators of turbulence are those related to the wind field. These indicators are vertical vector wind shear, deformation, and divergence. The analysis for turbulence is made from meteorological factors and pilot reports in terms of the probability of encountering significant turbulence (greater than light intensity) during flight segments 100 nautical miles long. Numerical forecasts of upper winds are prepared for the turbulence-reporting periods on the basis of advection and geostrophic departures. The departures are evaluated directly from the wind analyses by use of the balance equation. The advection uses upstream space differences and is tested in both explicit and implicit forms. (Author).
