Book Synopsis British Ford Cars of the 1960s and 1970s by : James Taylor
Download or read book British Ford Cars of the 1960s and 1970s written by James Taylor and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960s and 1970s were a pivotal period for Ford in Europe and, seen from a British perspective, were a time of experimentation and exploration. At the start of the 1960s Ford had models aimed at just two market sectors – small family saloons and large family saloons – but by the end of the 1970s they were represented in no fewer than five areas of the market with small hatchbacks, small saloons, medium saloons, sporty coupés and large saloons. And they had overtaken all rivals in Britain to be the best-selling manufacturer with (since 1967) the Cortina as the best-selling car. With over 270 photographs, this book details: the Ford company structure, businesses and key locations throughout the two decades; the factors influencing model design, engineering, styling and interior; specification and performance tables; market reception and sales; special editions, models produced overseas and conversions and finally, helpful buying advice for each model.

Book Synopsis Top Gear: My Dad Had One of Those by : Giles Chapman
Download or read book Top Gear: My Dad Had One of Those written by Giles Chapman and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good old Dad and his good old Dad's car. As solid and dependable as the man himself, if a little less balding, Dad's car was almost a member of the family, whisking you to exciting days out, or just to visit boring relatives in distant parts of the country to the chant of 'are we nearly there yet?' Like the man behind the wheel, Dad's car made you feel safe and secure, because it was as reassuring and sensible as he was. Maybe in an idle moment Dad dreamt of driving something rakish and fast, just like in idle moments he dreamt that your Mum was Twiggy, but the demands of family life meant soft tops, hard suspension and anything even remotely sporty were off the cards. Even anything less than four doors would have been wildly hedonistic. But although the family car may not have been the very essence of rock 'n' roll, Dad was proud of it. Spanning the 1950s to the '80s, this is a celebration of the heyday of the Dad car. From much loved family workhorses like the Ford Cortina and Vauxhall Viva to the rakish excitement and playground kudos of the Rover 3500 and Citroen CX, all the great Dad cars are here. Reflecting a time before people carriers and lifestyle off roaders, when the nearest thing to an airbag was hiding behind your fat brother, this is a celebration of simple, honest cars that were as flawed and as loveable as your Dad himself.
Book Synopsis Zephyr Zodiac by : Terry Ravenscroft
Download or read book Zephyr Zodiac written by Terry Ravenscroft and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zephyr Zodiac is the story of a Mark 3 Ford Zephyr Zodiac, the iconic car introduced in Britain to great acclaim in 1962. The narrative begins at the time our two-tone, white-walled tyred, leopard-skin upholstered car rolls off the production line in May of that year and ends when it meets its timely demise in a car crusher in 2012, during which time it chronicles how it affects the lives of seven of the people who have the pleasure of owning it during that period. The seven tales of its 50 eventful years earth include: the time it spends its days as a chauffeur-driven company limousine (and as a love nest by the chauffeur); the spell it is the family car of a loving, childless couple (and the new home of a couple of homeless children); the occasion it serves as a funeral car (and a temporary safe); the four years it is a taxi (and a means of transport for getting rid of a troublesome wife and her even more troublesome mother-in-law); the time it spends as a Classic Car (in which mode it fulfils the dreams of both a retired body shop mechanic and a Z-Car obsessed police superintendent). During which, among other things, it is given birth in, used as an emergency wedding car, stolen (more than once), used to have sex in (much more than once), and is instrumental in giving its grateful owner and his wife their lives back. Some of these stories in Zephyr Zodiac will warm the cockles of your heart and some will make you laugh. Maybe a couple of them will do both.

This well-illustrated history analyzes how both domestic car manufacturers and importers advertised their products in this growing market, identifying trends and themes. Over 180 advertisement illustrations are included.
Book Synopsis She Wore a Yellow Dress by : John Cammidge
Download or read book She Wore a Yellow Dress written by John Cammidge and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOHN is brought up on an isolated farm near York, spends his spare time birdwatching, lives with an unsympathetic stepfather and loving mother, and attends Hull University as the government pays his expenses. He worries about serious relationships with girls and has no idea of what career to follow. His experience so far is as a farm hand and a hospital porter. A letter he finds at home confirms his biological father is alive but has no intention of helping him. On Bonfire Night 1965 (Guy Fawkes Night), during his final undergraduate year, he meets a fellow student, JEAN-LOUISE, and a romantic relationship develops. In many ways she is different from John; she is a town girl, brought up by loving parents, is an only child, has opposing politics and knows what she wants to be – a fashion buyer for Marks & Spencer. The obstacle is her mother is ill with muscular dystrophy and she must help take care of her parents. She surprises John by encouraging his birdwatching. John joins Ford of Britain as a graduate trainee and after an uncertain start, is placed in industrial relations and decides to study for a graduate degree with the Institute of Personnel Management. He also discovers more about his real father. What happens to the couple during the subsequent 10 years as they navigate their careers, have to deal with events that take place in Britain during the period and manage personal issues at home, are the subjects of this book. There is panic buying during the 1974, 3-day working week, the affects on home life of Britain's entry into the Common Market, annual inflation driven above 25 percent in part because of trade union militancy, and many other national incidents. A unique feature of the novel is the use of bird species to illustrate human behavior and character. At the end of each chapter there is an illustration of the featured bird from that chapter to provide a summary of the bird's appearance and habitat in case the reader is interested. The novel blends British history, ornithology, success at work, discrimination against women and the challenges of home life into a single story.
