Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the success of the Ford Mustang “pony car” in the US, Ford UK launched “The Car You Always Promised Yourself” in 1969. It was an instant hit. There was an almost bewildering range of specs and trims, from L to XLR. An upgrade in 1972 introduced the overhead-camshaft Pinto engine to the 1600 and 2000 models, along with a front-end facelift and a new dash layout. Not to mention a 1300cc four-cylinder to a 3-litre V6. Thirty-nine incredible variants of the Mk1 Capri were released at launch. Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk1 takes you through the production period and pins down the correct factory specifications, equipment and finishes across the range, including the RS3100 and the factory “specials”. This information is backed up by specially commissioned color photography of 10 outstanding examples of the cars. You'll love the detail in production changes, dates and numbers, engine and chassis numbers, and aftermarket specials - convertibles by Abbott and Crayford, and performance Capris including the Broadspeed Bullitt and the Uren Comanche. There is also information on Capris built outside the UK. This is the most comprehensive guide on the Capri Mk1 that has ever even been attempted. It's thorough enough to satisfy the most ardent enthusiast for these stylish and desirable cars, and detailed enough to provide answers to questions about originality.

Book excerpt: Following up on Crap Cars and My Dad Had One of Those, Top Gear celebrates the midlife crisis with the definitive collection of the flashest, fastest, most impractical cars ever to be found in the driveways of otherwise perfectly sensible men. Drawing on the high level of expertise in this area, Top Gear explores the phenomenon of motoring and the midlife crisis, identifying over 50 classics of the genre across four desperate decades. From Ford Capri to Ferrari Testarossa, it celebrates the flashest, fastest and most ridiculous attempts to cover a bald spot, meanwhile offering a profound insight into the complex psychology of a middle-aged man and his quest for eternal youth. Top Gear's Midlife Crisis Cars both rejoices and recoils at the time-honoured tradition of flushing the children's inheritance on something you're too arthritic to get into in the first place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the success of the Ford Mustang “pony car” in the USA, Ford UK launched “The Car You Always Promised Yourself” in 1969 and it was an instant hit, with its long bonnet, sleek 2+2 coupé body, and low stance. For 1974, Ford launched the Capri II, with a new smooth body style, engines ranging from 1300 to 3000cc, and a plush Ghia version of the 3-litre model. In 1978 came the Capri Mk3 with yet more refinement and a four-headlamp nose. These classic Fords now have an almost fanatical following, supported by some very active owner’s clubs. Good examples are eagerly sought, and with prices rising restoration has become a very viable proposition. An astonishing number of variants of the Capri Mk2 and Mk3 were offered, so they really need to be identified. Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk II & Mk III, companion to our 2017 title Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk I, does the job, taking the reader right through the production period and pinning down the correct factory specifications, equipment and finishes across the range. This information is backed up by 300 specially commissioned colour photographs of outstanding examples of the cars.

In the swinging sixties he became a paratrooper, then a hairdresser and a racing driver. Chance encounters led to work as a film extra, then as a stunt performer on some of the major films of the day. He had found his calling. Fifty years later he reflects on a life in the movies and on TV, as one of Britain's best-loved stunt performers. Here he describes his early life and his route into working on some of the most successful films of all time, including Return fo the Jedi and Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. He's also worked with some of cinema's biggest stars including John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and Pierce Brosnan. The Luck of Losing the Toss contains photos from Frank's private collection, published here for the first time. Today Frank lives on his farm in Sussex and still makes the odd cameo appearance as a stunt performer in films.

Book excerpt: An illuminating study of the work of artist Martin Kippenberger, whose art expressed the enthusiasms and frustrations of the West German middle class. Martin Kippenberger: Everything Is Everywhere is the first scholarly monograph in English on West German artist Martin Kippenberger (1953–1997), one of the most prominent German artists of the 1980s. In this book, Chris Reitz shows that the condition of Kippenberger’s art was an endless, enthusiastic searching, constrained by the impossibility of fulfillment. A child during West Germany’s Wirtschaftswunder, the economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s, and a young adult during the economic recession and political tumult of the 1970s, Kippenberger belonged to the first truly postwar generation. But, largely uninterested in the legacy of National Socialism that had occupied his predecessors, Kippenberger instead pursued a hyperproductive artistic practice that reflected the dreams and fears of the ascendent 1980s West German middle class. Kippenberger’s ambitions took him everywhere: he founded a museum in Greece, invested in a fashion business and a restaurant, and even bought a gas station in Brazil. He made art in a dizzying range of genres, from paintings to poetry, from posters to stickers. He made art out of his appetites, too, producing art on the theme of his own alcoholism. Intensely entrepreneurial, Kippenberger carried out an artistic practice in which his diverse endeavors, and the people who joined him in them, were all connected in a sprawling network. Reitz deftly presents Kippenberger’s career as an allegory of the neoliberal networks of capital, technology, and culture that spanned Europe and America in the 1980s.

Book excerpt: Slow Car Fast: The Millennial Mantra Changing Car Culture for Good explores the changing tides of car culture and re-examines the meaning of being a “car guy” in 2020. Veteran automotive journalist Ryan K. ZumMallen parses this world through the drivers, tuners and designers that live and breathe it against the fertile backdrop of Southern California. How did horsepower and speed get so out of control? Do young people still like cars? Who are the automotive icons that will shape car culture for years to come? Slow Car Fast offers answers to the questions on the mind of every kid who grew up with a poster on their wall and dreamed of owning their dream car one day, ferreted out through first-hand reporting on the ground. ZumMallen goes inside the automotive zeitgeist to explain how modern car culture came to be, from the old-school (massive improvements in engineering and technology) to the new-school (the rise of video games and social media). Featuring interviews with dozens of influential voices and ride-alongs in today's automotive unicorns, Slow Car Fast is a must-have eBook for anyone who knows that getting behind the wheel is only the beginning.

Book excerpt: One of our great urbanists and one of our great public health experts join forces to reckon with how cities are changing in the face of existential threats the pandemic has only accelerated Cities can make us sick. They always have—diseases spread more easily when more people are close to one another. And disease is hardly the only ill that accompanies urban density. Cities have been demonized as breeding grounds for vice and crime from Sodom and Gomorrah on. But cities have flourished nonetheless because they are humanity’s greatest invention, indispensable engines for creativity, innovation, wealth, and connection, the loom on which the fabric of civilization is woven. But cities now stand at a crossroads. During the global COVID crisis, cities grew silent as people worked from home—if they could work at all. The normal forms of socializing ground to a halt. How permanent are these changes? Advances in digital technology mean that many people can opt out of city life as never before. Will they? Are we on the brink of a post-urban world? City life will survive but individual cities face terrible risks, argue Edward Glaeser and David Cutler, and a wave of urban failure would be absolutely disastrous. In terms of intimacy and inspiration, nothing can replace what cities offer. Great cities have always demanded great management, and our current crisis has exposed fearful gaps in our capacity for good governance. It is possible to drive a city into the ground, pandemic or not. Glaeser and Cutler examine the evolution that is already happening, and describe the possible futures that lie before us: What will distinguish the cities that will flourish from the ones that won’t? In America, they argue, deep inequities in health care and education are a particular blight on the future of our cities; solving them will be the difference between our collective good health and a downward spiral to a much darker place.

Book excerpt: An exquisitely written and nuanced biography of an exceptional individual and writer who has created the # 1 international bestselling hero Jack Reacher, revered by dedicated and loyal readers worldwide. Lee Child has a great public persona: he is gracious and generous with readers and fans. But Jim Grant is a reticent and very private man. This rags-to-riches literary and social biography is based principally on disarmingly frank personal conversations and correspondence with the author since 2016 and privileged access to archival materials. It consists almost entirely of original material, and is the nearest thing the world is likely to get to the autobiography he does not intend to write. There are a handful of great Lee Child/Reacher stories that have been recycled over and over again. They are so good that no one has bothered to look beyond them. This book revisits (and sometimes revises) those irresistible stories, but goes back further and digs deeper. The emphasis on chronology, accuracy and specificity is unprecedented. The Lee Child origin myth is much loved. But mostly it sees him springing fully formed from the brow of Granada Television. There are glancing references to Aston Villa and the schoolyard, but no one has examined the social and historical detail or looked closely at where Lee really came from: the people, places and period. This is the first time someone has described the Lee Child arc: from peaceful obscurity in the Yorkshire Dales and Upstate New York to cult figure, no. 1 in America, rock star, celebrity and publishing institution through to backlash, the changing zeitgeist, and intimations of retirement. The analysis of the emotional power and significance of Lee’s work in the final chapters—the themes of happiness, addiction, dependency, loneliness, and existential absurdity—and the first-hand retrospective accounts of his life and second-act career are all exclusive to this definitive biography.
