A partir des concepts d'hégémonie, de domination économique et de noyau technologique, nous mettons en question les éléments essentiels de la théorie de la globalisation, notamment l'idée d'une homogénéisation progressive de l'économie mondiale. En somme, durant la période d'étude, les Etats-Unis réussissent à établir de nouvelles bases pour leur domination économique à l'échelle mondiale. La première partie de la thèse présente la vision de la pensée dominante sur la globalisation et l'approche que nous avons développée, celle de la "production stratégique". Cette approche est fondée sur le concept d'hégémonie et constitue un effort de synthèse et de développement des apports de différentes disciplines, notamment l'économie industrielle, l'histoire et les études sur les relations internationales. La deuxième partie de la thèse présente le panorama de la concurrence entre firmes dans les cinq activités étudiées : semi-conducteurs, logiciels, ordinateurs, technologies de production et télécommunications numériques. Nous utilisons des indicateurs, notamment le produit intérieur brut, les ventes et les bénéfices des entreprises, pour mesurer les capacités de production existantes dans chaque économie dominante et le rapport de forces entre les acteurs les plus importants de chaque activité.
