Book excerpt: Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) and Brandt's cormorants (P. penicillatus) nest sympatrically in a large mixed-species colony on East Sand Island (ESI) in the Columbia River estuary. Ecological theory predicts that such morphologically similar species will partition prey resources when faced with resource limitations. During the summer of 2014, I investigated local movements, foraging dive behavior, and foraging habitat selection by breeding adults of both cormorant species using GPS tags with integrated temperature and depth data-loggers (GPS-TDlog, Earth & Ocean Technologies). The overall foraging areas and core foraging areas (defined as the 95% and 50% kernel density estimates of dive locations, respectively) of double-crested cormorants were much larger and covered a broader range of estuarine habitats than those of Brandt's cormorants. Only 26% and 27% of the overall and core foraging areas, respectively, for double-crested cormorants overlapped with those of Brandt's cormorants. Most of the overall and core foraging areas of Brandt's cormorants (59% and 89%, respectively) overlapped with those of double-crested cormorants, however. Within areas of overlap, Brandt's cormorants tended to dive deeper (median depth = 6.48 m) than double-crested cormorants (median depth = 2.67 m), and selected dive locations where the water was deeper. After accounting for local water depth, Brandt's cormorants utilized a deeper, more benthic portion of the water column than did double-crested cormorants. Our results indicate that species-specific patterns of foraging habitat utilization likely reflect past evolutionary divergence in foraging niche and evolved differences in behavioral and physiological adaptations, resulting in some partitioning of prey resources that would mitigate interspecific competition. Nevertheless, the substantial overlap in foraging habitat between the two cormorant species, particularly for Brandt's cormorants, suggests that superabundant prey resources allow these two large and productive cormorant colonies to coexist on a single island near the mouth of the Columbia River. Annual consumption of millions of out-migrating juvenile salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.), including smolts from populations listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, by double-crested cormorants nesting at ESI motivated natural resource managers to investigate potential management techniques to reduce cormorant predation by reducing the size of the breeding colony. To better understand potential dispersal of cormorants from the ESI colony due to management to reduce colony size, satellite transmitters were fitted on 83 double-crested cormorants captured on the ESI colony before egg-laying in 2013. Dispersal from ESI immediately following tagging was nearly ubiquitous, but temporary, and provided limited information on where cormorants might prospect for alternative nest sites if prevented from nesting on ESI. During this initial pre-nesting period, tagged cormorants were detected at colonies and roost sites as far from ESI as the Puget Sound region of coastal Washington; nevertheless, all but 4% of tagged cormorants returned to ESI within 2 weeks of being tagged. Following the subsequent breeding season, tagged cormorants staged at several nearby estuaries before migrating both north and south from ESI to overwinter in areas from British Columbia to northwestern Mexico; only 3% overwintered in the Columbia River estuary. Tracking data revealed substantial connectivity between the ESI colony and other colonies and regions within the range of the western North America population, suggesting the potential for widespread dispersal throughout the population's breeding range if nesting habitat on ESI was reduced or eliminated. Dispersal did not extend across the Cascade-Sierra Divide, however; greater connectivity existed with estuary locations throughout the range and particularly with more proximate estuaries that served as post-breeding staging areas. Surprisingly low regional and colony connectivity was observed with the Oregon Coast, despite numerous active and historical colonies in that region, as well as proximity to the colony at ESI. The strong philopatry to ESI that nearly all tagged cormorants exhibited, however, suggests that few alternative nesting opportunities are as attractive for prospecting double-crested cormorants as the ESI colony site.

Book excerpt: "Populations of double-crested cormorant, a widespread North American colonial waterbird, have steadily increased throughout much of the species' range after historically low numbers in the 1970s. Recent increases have been particularly dramatic at the Cat Island restoration site in the southernmost portion of Green Bay, Lake Michigan. This increase has attracted the attention of recreational and commercial fishers who fear that large numbers of piscivorous birds might affect local populations of desirable fish species. This study examines the daily and seasonal movements of nesting double-crested cormorants nesting or roosting at Cat Island. GPS transmitters provided hourly bird locations and other useful data (altitude, temperature, horizontal and vertical error, and ground speed) for 10 individuals captured and released during June 2021. I evaluated activity patterns and movements of these birds during the breeding and post-breeding periods. Maps of bird coordinates reveal a high degree of individual and seasonal variation in movement patterns and feeding locations. Cormorants were most frequently found in shallow coastal waters and bays, but individuals typically exhibited unique spatial foraging patterns. Results are evaluated in the context of central place foraging, a framework where individuals come and go from an overnight roosting or nesting colony. Theoretical predictions of optimal central place foraging and the existence of a "halo" of prey depletion are difficult to evaluate in Green Bay because favored feeding sites and prey resources are patchy and unevenly distributed around the central place. A relatively high number of bird locations were recorded 5 km or more from the daily central place. This suggests that the energetic cost of travel was low and/or foraging rewards were high for distant feeding locations. Cormorants also traveled longer distances as the season progressed and nest fidelity declined. Individuals often visited other nesting colonies in northern Green Bay and the Lake Winnebago/Fox River system, suggesting that regional colonies are socially inter-connected. The highly variable and large geographic range of Green Bay cormorants implies that the ecological footprint extends across a wide geographic area, perhaps diluting impacts of this opportunistic species on local fish populations."

Resulting persecution, as well as DDT water contamination, led to a major decline of the species throughout its range. Research shows that the main components of cormorant diets vary significantly among forage, invasive, or economically important fish species. A recent, rapid increase in cormorant abundance in the Great Lakes has led, in some instances, to calls for the management of cormorant populations. Thus the objective of this study was to determine the prey composition of the double-crested cormorant colony in East Chicago, Indiana. This study builds on previous work in the north basin of Lake Michigan by focusing on cormorant diet composition at their only significant nesting colony in the southern basin where cormorant diet has been unstudied. Regurgitated pellets were collected from the colony and diagnostic bones were used to elucidate diet composition. Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus ), round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), Lepomis spp., white perch (Morone americana) and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were the most frequently found prey items depending on cormorant breeding stage. Invasive species (i.e., alewife, round goby, white perch) contributed over ninety percent of the individuals and eighty percent of the biomass to cormorant diet over the study period. No salmonine species were detected suggesting that negative effects on this important fishery would likely occur only via direct competition for prey (e.g., alewife). Predation on yellow perch, which occurred mainly prior to and during the perch spawning season (i.e., of age-1 and older individuals), may warrant further study to quantify the effects on the local recreational yellow perch fishery. However, because yellow perch abundance is thought to be currently limited by poor recruitment at age-0, these results do not support active management of the cormorants at this colony to protect local fisheries.

This dissertation explored cases across this continuum, using stable isotopes to elucidate foraging behaviors critical to waterbird conservation and management issues. The first research chapter (Chapter 2) examined the type of foraging habitats used by colonial waterbirds in New York Harbor. For six species, key foraging habitat types were identified in order to prioritize the protection of foraging sites based on the resources they provided. Chapter 3 employed a captive feeding approach to measuring diet-tissue discrimination (measurements critical for SI diet analysis) in the Double-crested Cormorant. The remainder of this dissertation focused on the consumption of farmed fish by Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) in the southeastern US. These chapters provided novel approaches for remotely and noninvasively identifying birds involved in depredation (Chapter 4), and, as opposed to observing the effects of cormorants on aquaculture as was traditional in this field, considered the reciprocal effect of aquaculture on the birds (Chapter 5). The findings of Chapter 4 provided dietary (i.e., isotopic) confirmation of previously observed patterns of migratory connectivity. Breeding colonies in the Great Lakes contained the greatest proportion of birds that had consumed aquaculture resources during the winter. However, some proportion of every breeding population sampled across the eastern United States wintered in aquaculture habitats. We concluded that management of breeding birds in the Great Lakes was unlikely to alleviate aquaculture depredation, as birds breeding further west and east might increasingly contribute to the problem. Chapter 5 evaluated the importance of seasonal interactions in the life history of cormorants, specifically the strength of the carry-over effect of winter foraging behavior on summer body condition and reproductive output. Counter to our expectations, there was little support for a carry-over effect on body condition or reproductive output. In summary, this dissertation demonstrated the value of applying SI to a range of wildlife conservation and management issues, and supported the use of SI as a non-invasive, and relatively cost-effective method of monitoring resource use in wildlife populations.

Book excerpt: Abstract Managing protected areas requires consideration of broad scale social, ecological and in some cases, political factors. Additionally, the impacts of hyperabundant species is often a concern in protected areas as increases in breeding and foraging pressures can alter habitats dramatically. The influences of hyberabundant nesting colonies of waterbird species are well documented. Many studies indicate that waterbird species can influence canopy species as especially on the shoreline of islands, where the most abundant nesting pressures occur. On Lake Erie, Phalacrocorax auritus populations have increased dramatically from a low of 87 nests in 1979 to 16,050 nests in 2007. However, most studies have failed to address the influences that mature tree death may have on the ground layer ecosystem, including increased litter depth, herbaceous species composition and abundance and seed bank composition and viability. Consequently this study sought to quantify the nesting colonies' influence on coarse woody litter and how nest densities and litter depth influence the herbaceous layer, the seed bank composition and viability across the extent of three Lake Erie islands. My study was designed to quantify the nesting colonies' influence on these variables across the extent of each island, rather than just the perimeters where the majority of cormorant nests and visible damage exists. I collected my data in the summer of 2008 on East Sister Island, Middle Island and West Sister Island, using plotless-point quarter method, herbaceous layer surveys (incorporating data collected by Parks Canada and Ontario Parks in 2004 and 2007), cormorant nest counts, soil seed bank cores, and litter depth measurements. To test whether there are specific impacts of cormorant nests relegated to the island perimeters versus the rest of the island, an available subset of data on East Sister Island and Middle Island were used. These were expressed as vegetation 'damage indices' as classified by Parks Canada and Ontario Parks staff. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to determine if the different damage indices reveal any influence of cormorant nest density in smaller localized areas as opposed to testing the entirety of the islands. Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated that, island-wide, none of the herbaceous species abundance, diversity (total, native or exotic), seed bank composition, or seed viability has been affected significantly (P> 0.05) by either cormorant nest numbers or large-diameter litter-fall from cormorant nesting activities. However, damage indices (calculated using aerial photography) did indicate that, P .auritus nest density does influence litter depth, herbaceous species abundance and diversity in the island perimeter. Nest density has not significantly affected seed bank abundance or seed viability. My conclusion is that cormorants do not uniformly affect the islands as there is localized damage to the herbaceous layer, restricted primarily to the perimeters of the islands. However, there remains a risk to the interior herbaceous layer of the island if the effects of nesting pressures at the edges advance inward from this perimeter.
