Book excerpt: A celebration of the nuttiness and obsessives in all of us, RecordSetter is the new world record– setting phenomenon, a website that believes everyone can be the world’s best at something—and where 80,000 people a month come to prove it, or just enjoy watching. Corey Henderson and Dan Rollman, the creators of RecordSetter, are two entrepreneurs obsessed by world records who appear regularly on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and host events in cities around the country. The RecordSetter Book of World Records captures all the exuberance, energy, and quirky good humor of the records and record-setters. Here are more than 300 of the longest, loudest, slowest, weirdest, coolest, and most-difficult-to-break world records. There are Food & Drink Records. Sports & Games Records. Records set by (not-so) average Joes, and records set by celebrities (Most Bunnies Snuggled in a Hammock by Cameron Diaz).

Book excerpt: Sinatra. Streisand. Dylan. Pavarotti. McCartney. Sting. Madonna. What do these musicians have in common besides their super-stardom? They have all worked with legendary music producer Phil Ramone. For almost five decades, Phil Ramone has been a force in the music industry. He has produced records and collaborated with almost every major talent in the business. There is a craft to making records, and Phil has spent his life mastering it. For the first time ever, he shares the secrets of his trade. Making Records is a fascinating look "behind the glass" of a recording studio. From Phil's exhilarating early days recording jazz and commercial jingles at A&R, to his first studio, and eventual legendary producer status, Phil allows you to sit in on the sessions that created some of the most memorable music of the 20th century -- including Frank Sinatra's Duets album, Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, Ray Charles's Genius Loves Company and Paul Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years. In addition to being a ringside seat for contemporary popular music history, Making Records is an unprecedented tutorial on the magic behind what music producers and engineers do. In these pages, Phil offers a rare peek inside the way music is made . . . illuminating the creative thought processes behind some of the most influential sessions in music history. This is a book about the art that is making records -- the way it began, the way it is now, and everything in between.

Book excerpt: This history of the LP is a must-have for any music connoisseur! When vinyl LP records took over the music industry in the late 1950s, a new era began. No longer bound by the time constraints of the shellac 78s that had been in use since the 1910s, recording artists could now present an entire album—rather than a lone three-minute single—on a vinyl LP, giving listeners a completely new way to experience their music. In recent years, vinyl has found a second life as an art form, collected and appreciated by music connoisseurs across the world. Vinyl: The Art of Making Records examines the origins of the vinyl format and its evolution throughout the 20th century, and also provides an in-depth look at how vinyl LPs are manufactured and packaged—often with striking artwork that makes them beloved by music enthusiasts today. Also included are four removable art prints, each representing a sample of album covers from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Book excerpt: "Between the Records has the gritty realness of Meet Me in the Bathroom mixed with the literary family dynamics of The Corrections Brothers, fathers, and rock 'n' roll are at the heart of Between the Records, Julian Tepper's third novel, a moody and heady work of autofiction surrounding the relationship between Jules and Adam, two brothers who are also bandmates. Jules and Adam's quixotic yet fraught relationship has allowed them to make the art they love as they follow in their father's musician footsteps. Their band is signed to a label, they tour constantly, and their drummer, Abe is always late. As Jules navigates the period of time after their first album is released but before their second is made, the brothers begin to realize brotherhood and art are not enough. Jules, the younger, struggles to feel heard while Adam vies for the dominance he's accustomed to as the oldest brother. From the forest in Woodstock where they hole up trying to finish writing songs, to the tour van they're sick of, and finally to the streets of New York City where their final battle takes place, the brothers wrestle with their demons- musical and familial"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most anglers, catching a world-record fish is something they can only fantasize about. "Maybe," the angler thinks, "I'll get lucky." But if the reason you fish is to catch world-record fish, then luck is only a very small part of it, as Robert Cunningham has learned in the course of a long quest during which he has caught fifty-seven world-record fish, as certified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). Cunningham's pursuit of record fish began on the remote and austere Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, which he reached flying his own seaplane, and where he chased and landed several world-record redfish. Cunningham then moved offshore, where he took record cobia and dolphin on both conventional tackle with a fly rod, and set an astonishing eleven world records in one year. Cunningham has caught record fish in the sloughs of the Mobile River Delta, the interior lakes of the Bahamas, and along tide rips more than one hundred miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. He has fought potential world-record fish for eight hours, only to lose them at boatside, and then gone back for more, and along the way, learned all manner of angling skills as well as the ability to shake off the (literal) bad breaks. His account of one angler's obsession is full of humor, disappointment, and triumph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings bringing Jamaican music to a broader stage, Island Records has brought a global audience to the works of Bob Marley, U2, Cat Stevens, Steve Winwood, John Martyn, and Nick Drake among many others. Mixing cultures and influences from reggae to pop, hip hop, and punk, Island has shaken up artistic tastes and introduced new categories to mainstream music. This book, produced in collaboration with the label, moves chronologically from Island's origins in founder Chris Blackwell's passionate mission to bring Jamaican reggae to the mainstream, to the label's rise in popularity in the late 1960s and its acquisition of Traffic, Elvis Costello, U2, Roxy Music, and other era-defining acts, and finally to the new millennium and Island's continuing presence in the music industry. Included are photographs and album art from such acts as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Steve Winwood, Brian Eno, Grace Jones, Tom Waits, Eric B & Rakim, Tricky, Keane, Amy Winehouse, and many others. Heavily illustrated with a comprehensive retrospective of album covers, artist portraits, and photo shoots from the Island archive, and accompanied by essays from the founder of the company Chris Blackwell as well as ten of contemporary music's most esteemed writers, including Chris Salewicz, Jon Savage, Joe Boyd, and Richard Williams, Keep on Running: The Story of Island Records is a celebration of one of the most influential record labels of the twentieth century.
