Book Synopsis A Socialist Peace? by : Mike McGovern
Download or read book A Socialist Peace? written by Mike McGovern and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last twenty years, the West African nation of Guinea has exhibited all of the conditions that have led to civil wars in other countries, and Guineans themselves regularly talk about the inevitability of war. Yet the country has narrowly avoided conflict again and again. In A Socialist Peace?, Mike McGovern asks how this is possible, how a nation could beat the odds and evade civil war. Guinea is rich in resources, but its people are some of the poorest in the world. Its political situation is polarized by fiercely competitive ethnic groups. Weapons flow freely through its lands and across its borders. And, finally, it is still recovering from the oppressive regime of Sékou Touré. McGovern argues that while Touré’s reign was hardly peaceful, it was successful—often through highly coercive and violent measures—at establishing a set of durable national dispositions, which have kept the nation at peace. Exploring the ambivalences of contemporary Guineans toward the afterlife of Touré’s reign as well as their abiding sense of socialist solidarity, McGovern sketches the paradoxes that undergird political stability.

Book Synopsis Socialists and International Actions for Peace 1914–1923 by : Masao Nishikawa
Download or read book Socialists and International Actions for Peace 1914–1923 written by Masao Nishikawa and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analyses and accounts of the history of the "Second International" often go up to 1914, the year its anti-war efforts were to prove futile. All actions of the socialists during World War I were discussed in the context of the pathway to the "Third International." The author aims to present a somewhat different picture from existing views by examining the thoughts and actions of socialists in the years 1914-1923 beyond the framework of whether they supported or opposed the "Third International." He describes what circumstances led to the formation of "communism" and "social democracy," which divided in two the international socialist movement for almost 70 years, paying attention to various issues deeply involved in international and domestic politics as well as in the socialist movement. Masao Nishikawa taught western history at the Tokyo Women's Christian College (1966-1968), the University of Tokyo (1968-1994) and Senshū University (1994-2004). He was visiting professor at Ruhr University Bochum (1976-1977) and Bremen University (1988-1989). Upon retirement he was made professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He had a worldwide fame as a specialist of international socialist movements.
Download or read book Zilliacus written by Archie Potts and published by Merlin Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zilliacus lived through turbulent years. He was an enemy of fascism from the 1930s, and after the Second World War worked against Cold War hysteria through meetings and contascts with Stalin, Khrushchev, Tito and Castro. Ernest Bevin hated the critical Gateshead Member of Parliament, and this led to his expulsion from the Labour Party. Zilliacus fought back and was re-admitted. In 1955 he won the parliamentary seat of Manchester Gorton for Labour. This biography, based on the Zilliacus Papers and other sources, traces the life of this remarkable man and throws light upon people and events over the first decades of the 20th Century. 'A brilliant biography of a brilliant man.' Tony Benn
