A Man for Others chronicles Kolbe's remarkable life, which climaxed in 1941 in Auschwitz, where he volunteered to die in place of a fellow prisoner he hardly knew. Told chiefly in the words of his family, friends, acquanitances, and death-camp survivors -- including the man he died for -- A Man for Others is the story of an innovative, down-to-earth, and immensely likable man whose martyr's death concluded a life devoted to his ideal of "love without limits." Maximilian Kolbe is a real hero for our times and an inspiration for any reader." --

Book excerpt: For the Ankave of Papua New Guinea, men, unlike women, do not reach adulthood and become fathers simply by growing up and reproducing. What fathers--and by extension, men--actually are is a result of a series of relational transformations, operated in and by rituals in which men and women both perform complementary actions in separate spaces. Acting for Others is a tour de force in Melanesian ethnography, gender studies, and theories of ritual. Based on years of fieldwork conducted by the author and her husband and co-ethnographer, this book's "double view" of the Ankave ritual cycle--from women in the village and from the men in the forest--is novel, provocative, and one of the most incisive analyses of the emergence of ideas of gender in Papua New Guinea since Marilyn Strathern's The Gender of the Gift. At the heart of Pascale Bonnemère's argument is the idea that it is possible for genders to act for and upon one another, and to do so almost paradoxically, by limiting action through the obeying of taboos and other restrictions. With this first English translation by acclaimed French translator Nora Scott, accompanied by a foreword from Marilyn Strathern, Acting for Others brings the Ankave ritual world to new theoretical life, challenging how we think about mutual action, mutual being, and mutual life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beloved bestseller—over 180,000 copies sold—has helped caregivers worldwide keep themselves emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, and physically healthy in the face of the sometimes overwhelming traumas they confront every day. A longtime trauma worker, Laura van Dernoot Lipsky offers a deep and empathetic survey of the often-unrecognized toll taken on those working to make the world a better place. We may feel tired, cynical, or numb or like we can never do enough. These, and other symptoms, affect us individually and collectively, sapping the energy and effectiveness we so desperately need if we are to benefit humankind, other living things, and the planet itself. In Trauma Stewardship, we are called to meet these challenges in an intentional way. Lipsky offers a variety of simple and profound practices, drawn from modern psychology and a range of spiritual traditions, that enable us to look carefully at our reactions and motivations and discover new sources of energy and renewal. She includes interviews with successful trauma stewards from different walks of life and even uses New Yorker cartoons to illustrate her points. “We can do meaningful work in a way that works for us and for those we serve,” Lipsky writes. “Taking care of ourselves while taking care of others allows us to contribute to our societies with such impact that we will leave a legacy informed by our deepest wisdom and greatest gifts instead of burdened by our struggles and despair.”

Book excerpt: Musical activity is one of the most ubiquitous and highly valued forms of social interaction in North America (to say nothing of world over), being engaged from sporting events to political rallies, concerts to churches. Moreover, music's use as an affective agent for political and religious programs suggests that it has ethical significance. Indeed, many have said as much. It is surprising then that music's ethical significance remains one of the most undertheorized aspects of both moral philosophy and music scholarship. Music for Others: Care, Justice, and Relational Ethics in Christian Music fills part of this scholarly gap by focusing on the religious aspects of musical activity, particularly on the practices of Christian communities. Based on ethnomusicological fieldwork at three Protestant churches and a group of seminary students studying in an immersion course at South by Southwest (SXSW), and synthesizing theories of discourse, formation, and care ethics oriented towards restorative justice, it first argues that relationships are ontological for both human beings and musical activity. It further argues that musical meaning and emotion converge in human bodies such that music participates in personal and communal identity construction in affective ways-yet these constructions are not always just. Thus, considering these aspects of music's ways of being in the world, Music for Others finally argues that music is ethical when it preserves people in and restores people to just relationships with each other, and thereby with God.

These dynamic prayers combine the power of God's Word and the power of prayer in effective ways that bless both the intercessor and the ones for whom the prayers are offered. "Prayers for Others covers a multitude of topics dealing with personal and emotional needs; family needs; healing needs; financial needs; and spiritual needs. As you pray God's Word in behalf of others, amazing things will happen and you will be thrilled to see God at work in the lives of those for whom you pray. The topical approach of this book makes it an easy-to-use tool in interceding for others. The topics address vital issues that are impacting the lives of many people today, such as: Addictions; an Adopted Child; Emotional Healing; Depression; Loneliness; Mental Healing; Perfectionism; Physical Healing; the Fruit of the Spirit; Temptation; and Salvation. Praying for others is a priority in the Kingdom of God, as Paul pointed out to Timothy: "I exhort therefore, that, "first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all..." (1 Tim. 2:1, italics ours). Let this book help you engage in this exciting and important ministry.

Reading the provocative Rules for Others to Live By is like having dinner with a friend whose point of view shakes up and invariably runs counter to conventional thinking. He’s a debunker of the pretensions of daily life.” —Delia Ephron, author of Sister Mother Husband Dog and Siracusa Between stressing about his theater friends and reconciling his complicated feelings about an inconsistently wonderful New York City, Tony Award–winning playwright and Pulitzer finalist Richard Greenberg also maintains a reputation for being something of a hermit. He takes the time to privately process the absurdity of the world outside, and the result is this hysterically funny and daringly thoughtful collection of original essays. In Rules for Others to Live By, he shares lessons from his highly successful writing career, observations from two long decades of residence on a three-block stretch of Manhattan, and musings from a complicated and occasionally taxing social life. Firmly sympathetic to the struggles of the more bizarre and unstable among us, Greenberg tackles a range of topics—from the difficulties of friendship to the art of writing, the pain of heartbreak to the curiously unpredictable weather of his neighborhood, and the moderate hypochondria that comes with age, as well as the more serious health crises that unfortunately also come with age. In essays that are at turns quietly subversive and thoroughly hopeful and life-affirming, Greenberg’s distinct and hilarious voice articulates our own mild obsessions and the idiosyncrasies that we can only hope will go unnoticed in a crowd.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of seventeen, in the arms of a thief, Pierre Seel felt his watch sliding off his wrist. So begins the astonishing chain of events that led to the Schirmeck-Vorbruch concentration camp, where Seel suffered unspeakable horrors for the sole "crime" of being a homosexual. The story of survival in the camps has been told many times, but Seel's is one of the only firsthand accounts of the Nazi roundup and deportation of homosexuals. For nearly forty years he kept his experiences - including torture, humiliation, and witnessing the vicious murder of his lover at the hands of the Nazis - a secret in order to cover up his homosexuality. He found a wife through a personal ad, married, and raised three children. "The Liberation", he writes, "was for others". Finally, haunted by his experiences and by the silence of others, he decided to bear witness to an aspect of the Holocaust rarely seen. As he noted, "If I do not speak, I will become the accomplice of my torturers".

(Matthew 16:25, NIV)? In Living for Another, author and speaker Brent Gambrell calls the reader to realize God has called us all to abundant life, but in order to have that, we must live a life for someone other than ourselves. You must live for Another. Your life is not destined to be a cautionary tale of what could have been. Have an abundant life by living a life of voluntary loss; a life poured out intentionally for others. Live a life that pleases the One who gave His life for you. Live an abundant life when you live for Another.

It tracks recent debates in Dutch society on citizenship and the rights of immigrants, and analyses the shift from the perception of human rights as a 'foreign policy concern' to the slow processes of homecoming in what has traditionally been a left-wing society, but now includes many more right-wing political parties. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, Oomen combines insights from law, sociology and anthropology to explain how rights gain significance in framing social and political discussions. The book provides comprehensive coverage on relevant constitutional law, legal culture and rights realization as well as discussing case material on human rights education, polarization, socio-economic rights, domestic violence and the rights of minorities. This is an invaluable contribution to the global fields of human rights and socio-legal studies for scholars and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Michael Andrew Quinlan entered the world in 1942 in Washington, DC, his birth was a miracle. According to at least one physician, his very conception was impossible. Twelve inches long, two-and-a-half months premature and weighing just over three pounds, Mike survived and thrived for the next sixty-six years. But in 2009, he died suddenly, just twelve days after being diagnosed with mantle cell B lymphoma, a virulent form of cancer that is difficult to diagnose. In Mike: A Man for Others, author William Allen Quinlan, Jr., Mikes brother, narrates Mikes story and the significant impact he had on those around him. The author presents a personal history that is part memoir and part biography, chronicling his brothers lifehis birth as the youngest of three boys; his parental background; his upbringing in Bethesda, Maryland; and his days as a student, US Marine, successful food and beverage manager, dedicated and accomplished golfer, certified member of the Golf Nut Society of America; and a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather. Always heartfelt and sincere, and sometimes humorous, Mike: A Man for Others celebrates Mike Quinlans life, shares his stories, and teaches about loving life to the fullest, about giving, not taking.
