Book excerpt: In September of 2006, David Blue and his girlfriend Deanne Rae Byrd witnessed horrifying and haunting occurrences at their farm in Port Clinton, Ohio, which challenged their reasoning and logic. They were joined by some unwelcomed and harmful guests, which resulted in David being committed to a psychiatric hospital for six months. David is ready to be released from the hospital-but not from the nightmares that landed him there in the first place. Vowing never to return to the family farm in Port Clinton, David and Deanne are unavoidably pulled back by dark forces. They will not be alone, because joining them is a man in a ballerinas tutu, and sneakers wearing a clowns mask. At the farm, the couple also finds a strange little teddy bear and a horde of creepy little kids. In the meantime, people are disappearing, all the way from Columbus to Port Clinton. A skeleton key with a red ribbon drives a group of strangers to Davids farm. What these strangers cant anticipate is the horror that awaits them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned philosopher argues that singular causation in the mind is not grounded in general patterns of causation, a claim on behalf of human distinctiveness, which has implications for the future of social robots. A blab droid is a robot with a body shaped like a pizza box, a pair of treads, and a smiley face. Guided by an onboard video camera, it roams hotel lobbies and conference centers, asking questions in the voice of a seven-year-old. “Can you help me?” “What is the worst thing you’ve ever done?” “Who in the world do you love most?” People pour their hearts out in response. This droid prompts the question of what we can hope from social robots. Might they provide humanlike friendship? Philosopher John Campbell doesn’t think so. He argues that, while a social robot can remember the details of a person’s history better than some spouses can, it cannot empathize with the human mind, because it lacks the faculty for thinking in terms of singular causation. Causation in Psychology makes the case that singular causation is essential and unique to the human species. From the point of view of practical action, knowledge of what generally causes what is often all one needs. But humans are capable of more. We have a capacity to imagine singular causation. Unlike robots and nonhuman animals, we don’t have to rely on axioms about pain to know how ongoing suffering is affecting someone’s ability to make decisions, for example, and this knowledge is not a derivative of general rules. The capacity to imagine singular causation, Campbell contends, is a core element of human freedom and of the ability to empathize with human thoughts and feelings.

This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an Adirondack cabin that starts as a refuge and becomes a trap ... to the high society of Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square and Main Line ... to the craggy beauty of Mount Desert Island, Maine ... to a general aviation airport struggling to survive, Ann Kinnear evolves from a woman whose past has punished her for practicing her spirit-sensing abilities to an expert whose skill rivals that of her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-competitor Garrick Masser. The dead have secrets they're willing to share, and Ann Kinnear can hear them ... but they can be secrets that someone is willing to kill to keep. This ebook box set includes the first three Ann Kinnear Suspense Novels: THE SENSE OF DEATH, THE SENSE OF RECKONING, and THE FALCON AND THE OWL. THE SENSE OF DEATH Ann Kinnear thought the job was just another sensing-for-hire ... until she realized that the woman in the Philadelphia townhouse was the victim of murder. Will Ann be able to bring the victim's killer to justice—or will she pay the ultimate price herself? Ann Kinnear has created a peaceful existence at her cabin in the Adirondack woods. But the calm is shattered after socialite Elizabeth Firth is reported missing. With few clues and fewer options, Detective Joe Booth calls upon Ann's spirit sensing abilities to help solve the mystery, and to uncover what Elizabeth's husband is hiding beneath his cloak of wealth and privilege. As Ann is drawn deeper into a web of lies and betrayal, will its fatal threads snare her as well? THE SENSE OF RECKONING Ann Kinnear thinks that her midnight visit to a shuttered Maine hotel with a haunted past is simply a favor for a friend ... until she finds that more than secrets are buried there. Will Ann be able to unlock the secrets hidden within those walls, or will she succumb to an eternity trapped there herself? After solving the Philadelphia Socialite murder, Ann Kinnear should be riding high. Instead, she's depressed and considering abandoning her spirit sensing business. To add to her problems, she has suffered a series of injuries to her hands—could these be the ghostly repercussions of the violence that ended her last case? Ann goes to Maine to solicit help from fellow spirit senser Garrick Masser. Ann and Garrick find more trouble than they bargained for in a tale of obsession and misplaced loyalty that has its roots in a crumbling summer hotel, international art theft, and the historic wildfire that raged across Mount Desert Island in 1947. Will Ann be able to fit together the pieces of the puzzle, or will she miss the vital piece ... and its warning of the danger that lies in wait? THE FALCON AND THE OWL A small plane crashes in the Pennsylvania Wilds ... and only Ann Kinnear has the ability to discover the force that brought it down. Will the secret the victims carried die with them, or come back to haunt her? Ann Kinnear is indulging her love of aviation by working toward her pilot’s license at Avondale Airport—and protecting her privacy by discouraging the attentions of a filmmaker intent on documenting her spirit-sensing abilities. Little does she know that a fiery plane crash in the Pennsylvania Wilds will embroil her in a race to track down a contract on which two rivals are banking their futures. And when airshow pilot Gwen Burridge launches a smear campaign against Ann, she is even more determined to uncover the truth. Ann travels to the crash site and learns what brought the plane down—but it’s only part of the story. Will Ann land safely, or be the latest victim of a secret someone is willing to kill to keep? Vienna Spies: With the end of the Second World War in sight, the Allies begin to divide up the spoils and it proves to be a dangerous game. The British have become aware that, contrary to prior agreements, the Soviet Union is intent on controlling Austria once the war ends. Major Edgar is tasked with the job of establishing an espionage unit in Vienna to monitor the situation. He sends in two agents – Rolf Eder and Katharina Hoch – to track down Austria's most respected politician and bring him over to the British cause. But the feared Soviet spy Viktor Krasotkin is already in the war-torn city, embarking on exactly the same mission... The Berlin Spies: Berlin, 1945. SS recruits gather east of the city for an audacious yet ill-fated mission to bring about a Fourth Reich. Three decades later, a young British diplomat in East Berlin is compromised after falling into a honey-trap. He contacts Major Edgar, a veteran British spymaster, who is drawn into an unlikely alliance with his old adversary, Viktor Krasotkin. Soon they are plunged into a world of Nazi war criminals and double agents. With nobody to trust, they must rely on each other. But as Cold War tensions rise, the cracks begin to show.
