Book excerpt: Mary Baker Eddy. Speaking for herself offers an unprecedented look at the woman hailed in 1907 as "...the most famous, interesting, and powerful woman in America, if not the world" (Human Life magazine). First in a series of books featuring her previously unpublished writings, this is a volume where Eddy's voice is heard as never before. Mary Baker Eddy's accomplishments as a healer. author, publisher, and founder of an international newspaper and a worldwide movement are extraordinary when viewed in light of her nineteenth-century surroundings. Jana K. Riess, Religion Book Review Editor for Publishers Weekly, notes that Eddy "...persistently enlarged the boundaries of spirituality, womanhood, and medicine more than a century ago. She was a unique, strong, and visionary leader, a product of the nineteenth century who looked into the future and claimed its progress." Dr. Riess's insightful introduction looks at the societal context in which Eddy lived and made her lasting legacy. As the current interest in spirituality continues to rise, Eddy's bold concepts about spirituality, health, and womanhood are more relevant than ever. In the words of Dr. Riess, "Her personal story could be any of ours, and it inspires us to transcend our circumstances as she did." Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Marie Dicker Haas knew how to make friends and keep themÑand being connected to others was what she treasured most. In this memoir, her spirit shines through, as do her philosophies on life, which she developed over more than 90 years before her death in 2017. From her formative days growing up on Staten Island, New York, to her years at Cornell University, through the World War II years, and on to life as it unfolded, she writes with a thoughtful, creative style. She writes courageously of her loves, including the death of Sammy Greenwald during World War II, which she writes Òaffected me more profoundly than any other event I had experienced until that time.Ó He had been born next door, and heÕd always been in her life. Years later, Marie eloped with a concert violinist who melodiously transformed her life for the next twenty-five years, and two children gave her the opportunity to experience one of her greatest joys: motherhood. She also shares lessons from her greatest challenges.

Book excerpt: Jeff Garlin shares his hysterical and eye-opening journey to reduce his waistline and his carbon footprint during the production of the seventh season of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm Jeff Garlin has dedicated the filming of an entire season of Curb Your Enthusiasm to completely making over his lifestyle in two major ways—by lightening his physical and his ecological footprints. After many false starts, he believes that writing a book about the experiment is the only possible way to help him lose weight and go green. The hardest part of the endeavor is overcoming his food addiction—especially when craft service has a constant buffet of everything delicious you could imagine on set. In addition to cutting calories, Jeff accidentally falls into a love affair with pilates, sweats with Richard Simmons, and twice visits the Pritikin Longevity Center, which he says is "rehab for people who eat too much pizza." Larry David’s rooting for him. Jerry Seinfeld’s plotting against him. And his wife is just plain annoyed by everything. As far as going green, Jeff has always been a big recycler, but he has a lot to learn. For example, actor Ed Begley Jr. is the guy to call if you want to reduce your environmental impact. Jeff does, and it changes everything. He hopes that being healthy and green becomes a big part of who he is—if not now, when?
Book Synopsis Footprints in Micrometeorology and Ecology by : Monique Y. Leclerc
Download or read book Footprints in Micrometeorology and Ecology written by Monique Y. Leclerc and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to interpret meteorological measurements made at a given level over a surface with regard to characteristic properties such as roughness, albedo, heat, moisture, carbon dioxide, and other gases is an old question which goes back to the very beginnings of modern micrometeorology. It is made even more challenging when it is unclear whether these measurements are only valid for this point/region and precisely describe the conditions there, or if they are also influenced by surrounding areas. After 50 years of field experiments, it has become both apparent and problematic that meteorological measurements are influenced from surfaces on the windward side. As such, extending these measurements for inhomogeneous experimental sites requires a quantitative understanding of these influences. When combined with atmospheric transport models similar to air pollution models, the ‘footprint’ concept – a fundamental approach introduced roughly 20 years ago – provides us with information on whether or not the condition of upwind site homogeneity is fulfilled. Since these first models, the development of more scientifically based versions, validation experiments and applications has advanced rapidly. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of these developments, to analyze present deficits, to describe applications and to advance this topic at the forefront of micrometeorological research.

Book excerpt: Following the fortieth anniversary of Apollo 11, as NASA prepares to return astronauts to the moon, Footprints in the Dust offers a thorough, engrossing, and multifaceted account of the Apollo missions. The flight of Apollo 11 was a triumph of human endeavor, persistence, and technology, one of the greatest achievements in human history. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with key figures in the space program, the authors convey the human drama and chart the technological marvels that went into the Apollo missions. They also put the accomplishments of American spaceflight into historical context, examining the competitive space race with the Soviet Union, the roles of politics and personality in launching the mission, and the consequences, practical and profound, of this giant leap for mankind.
