Book excerpt: The conclusions drawn by analyzing statistics from college and professional football often do not translate to the high school game because the games are so different. This book puts those powerful statistical techniques for maximizing a team's chance of winning into the hands of high school coaches and fans. These techniques are illustrated using the Pulaski Academy Bruins as a case study. Techniques such as Expected Point Value and Points Per Possession analysis are demonstrated with examples. The authors explore the utility of onside kicks, 4th down decision making, and two point conversion attempts. In addition, the book touches on the aspects of game theory as it relates to the opponents psychological state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American football is a great sport, but if you didn't grow up eating and breathing it, it can be really hard to figure out. When you try to watch a game on tv the commentators seem to be speaking Martian, and the jumble of players on the field is totally confusing. Unlike many sports that you can watch for a few minutes and pretty much understand, football needs someone to explain it to you. The Ultimate Football Survival Guide: Demystifying This Great American Pastime does just that. In plain English -- in a friendly, conversational style as if a friend were sitting on the couch next to you - it tells you how the game is organized, who the players are and what they do, diagrams how the players are positioned to start plays, talks about officials, penalties, and coaching staff. It also touches briefly on recent controversies, college and high school football, women and football, and American football overseas. Annexes include fun statistics, Super Bowl results, and members of the NFL Hall of Fame. An easy-reference glossary of nearly 400 terms is also included. The purpose of the book isn't to make you an expert on every nuance of every rule, but to give you a solid understanding of the game so that you can enjoy watching it.Football is fun, and a book about it should be fun to read, so the Survival Guide includes dozens and dozens of hilarious anecdotes, some of which were contributed specifically for this book by NFL coaches and players.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Determined Look: Stories of a Youth Football Coaching Legend" is written by Three Year Letterman, a thirty-nine-year old college dropout who lives in a Northeast Georgia. He is the coach of a youth football dynasty. Unlike many youth sports coaches, Coach Letterman angrily rejects the notion that the purpose of youth sports is to have fun. He instead adopts a win-at-all-costs approach. This sometimes involves him intentionally trying to make players quit, recruiting players that he knows are too old for the league, and "altering" residency papers. Coach Letterman is also very proud of the fact that he "rakes in $29.35 an hour plus bennies and a cell phone" and "lives in an apartment complex with a pool and computer lab." He lettered for three years in high school football at wide receiver. He still wears his letter jacket to this day and stands in the student section when he watches high school football games. He's also a rabid University of Georgia football fan who takes takes pride in the fact that he barks at opposing fans. This book includes twenty-eight chapters of Coach Letterman offering youth coaching tips and opining on a variety of topics. Topics include "How to Attend a High School Football Game and Post-Game Field Party in Style," "Turning the Local School System from Adversary to Co-Conspirator," and "How to Dominate a Deposition."

Book excerpt: Coaching youth sports teams can be very stressful. Some unreasonable parents and children can make a coach''s life difficult. Of coarse, some selfish coaches can damage the child''s sports experience as well. This book began as a one page list of strategies designed to help the local youth league baseball coaches enjoy a season absent of parent and player grievances It has grown into a compilation of anecdotes designed to support coaching strategies and concepts that lead to rewarding seasons for everyone. Along with a series of strategies for a happy team, this book also addresses the lessons provided by youth sports and competition, the difficulties of high expectations placed on some children with early success, how to help the less confident and less talented, how to handle difficult parents, and what it means to win.. The book is full of entertaining true stories. The final chapter, “The Last Philly”, is a true story that pulls it all together and demonstrates a magnificent payoff courtesy of teamwork, effort and encouragement.
