Book excerpt: How a 2,000-year-old letter can revolutionize your life. The Apostle Paul was a wise saint who often revealed a crusty attitude–especially when the truth of the gospel was under attack. So when he penned his letter to his “dear children” in the faith–the Galatians–his frustration over their warped thinking had him about to blow his top. Though he tried to restrain himself, he couldn’t help but call them “foolish”! Paul simply could not understand how any follower of Christ, adopted by faith into the most free and exciting life possible, could want to go back to the old way of bondage to rules and regulations. You’d think by now, two thousand years later, things would have changed. But even today Christians just can’t seem to “get” the revolutionary message of spiritual freedom and power advocated in the book of Galatians. In Foolish No More! Ted Haggard, senior pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs and president of the National Association of Evangelicals, retraces Paul’s arguments to make the clear case for breathtaking freedom in Christ. So wise up! Discover how to put off the old ways and walk in the Spirit, enjoy freedom in Christ, and wield the power of God on behalf of His Kingdom.

Book excerpt: Philippe de Remi (1200/1210–65) holds a remarkable position in the legacy of the thirteenth-century literary world. A layman, landholder, and professional administrator, rather than a court poet or member of the clergy, Philippe de Remi wrote poems, songs, and long verse narratives that were grounded in his familiarity with the literary genres of his day. While Philippe paid homage to Chrétien de Troyes and other important secular writers of the period, his station in society and an intended audience of family and friends, not patrons, allowed him the freedom to treat courtly conventions with some independence and to explore human motivations across the social spectrum. Barbara Sargent-Baur brings to the modern English-speaking reader a translation of three of Philippe’s most important compositions: his two verse romances, Manekine and John and Blonde, as well as his single short verse tale, “Foolish Generosity.” This volume gathers the first English stand-alone prose translations of these romances, which have been previously published only as line-by-line versions facing the Old French originals. Sargent-Baur’s English translation of “Foolish Generosity” is the first rendering from Old French in any language. These important translations allow increased access to Philippe de Remi’s attractive narrative works, expanding their audience beyond an Old French readership to the wider academic community.

This book was released on 2013-02-24 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this very popular but needful work on foolish talking, Burgess begins with Ephesians 5:4, “Neither foolish talking nor jesting, which are not convenient.” He explains what foolish talk is, and how it can be profane, hypocritical, rash, unsuitable, unseasonable, excessive and uncharitable. Then he explains that foolish jesting is profane, unclean, unnatural, immoral, and immoderate. Finally he ends his treatise with sixteen truths to draw out of the text, and sixteen duties that God presses believers to understand from the text. His goal is that Christians may speak and converse with an end to glorify God and the Savior Jesus Christ, and not follow the way of the foolish jester who is a beast in the eyes of a holy God. This treatise deals with difficult doctrinal truths that Christians often do not want to hear concerning the manner of their speech. It was necessary in Burgess’ day, and he pressed the issue often in his congregation. In our age of post-modernism, liberalism and “free speech” in the media, it is even more important today. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." (Edmond Burke) Or for selfish people to obstruct those who are trying to do the right thing. This book probes the Islamic fanatics' end game - convert or die, they tell the West. The fanatics see our very success as a mortal threat to their own perverted version of the "pure" Islam world over which they thirst to rule. But the book also probes the feckless French and foolish liberals who are so wrapped up in their own agendas that they stand between forceful leadership and the real enemy at the gates. Bin Laden is perfectly willing to brainwash his followers into sacrificing their lives for the illusion of eternal paradise. Not that Bin Laden and his chief lieutenants are ready to die for their cause just yet. They want others to die so that they can live out their fantasies of a world converted in their image. How does he get away with it? By skillfully preying on the weaknesses of others, including the short-sighted who are blinded by their greed, cowardice or folly. This is where the feckless French and foolish liberals come in. As the book explains, tyrants like Saddam Hussein suit the fanatic Islamists' ambitions perfectly. All of this and more were staring the feckless French and foolish liberals in the face. But they turned a blind eye. At a crucial point in the history, they chose a course even worse then doing nothing. They obstructed decisive action against the growing cancer to serve their own agendas. In their own way and for their own selfish reasons, the French (along with other European elites) and the liberal establishment have trouble dealing with decisive assertions of U.S. power. They want to bring the United States down to a level that is indistinguishable from any other country. In a world of moral ambivalence that the feckless French and the foolish liberals are used to inhabiting, the United States government is no less to blame for what happened on September 11th than the terrorists and dictators who support them. This book connects the dots in the concerted strategy to fight the War on Terror that the liberals and French refuse to see and explains how George Bush's decision to remove Saddam Hussein after twelve years of inaction on the part of the United Nations was an essential part of that strategy
