Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food is an extraordinary expression of culture; the assortment of flavours, smells, colours and appearance match the diversity of the cultures from which they come and provide very visible evidence of the migration of populations and of the growing multiculturalism of many countries. Adam Lindgreen and Martin K. Hingley draw on research into European, Latin American and (Near and Far) Eastern markets to provide a comprehensive collection of original, cutting-edge research on the opportunities that the changing landscapes of ethnic, religious and cultural populations present for businesses and marketers. The New Cultures of Food uses the perspective of food culture to explore the role of food as a social agent and attitudes to new foodstuffs amongst indigenous populations and to indigenous food amongst immigrant communities. Opportunities and routes to market for exploiting growing demand for ethnic food are also investigated. This is an important book for food and consumer businesses, policy makers and researchers seeking to understand changing global markets and the significance of food as an indicator of social and religious attitude, diet and ethnic identity.

Book excerpt: This book represents a unique collection of European and Asian perspectives on the production, trade and consumption of high quality food. The rapidly growing demand for organic and quality food in Europe imposes new challenges on competing food value chains. Europe, as the biggest worldwide food importer, attracts many developing and developed countries in Asia. Prospering Chinese and Thai food markets offer new opportunities for European operators. Wealthy and informed consumers on both continents search for trustworthy high quality food products. Farmers, operators and retailers from distant cultures are coping with different standards, facing the ever increasing necessity for mutual understanding. This publication is the output of Bean-Quorum, a European funded Asia-Link project. Bean-Quorum represents a consolidated network of researchers working together with the business sector and NGOs to enhance European Asian understanding about organic and quality food. This book describes global trends in organic and quality food trade and connects them with recent developments in Asian and European market structures. Selected case studies illustrate the impact of organic and quality food production on topics ranging from sustainable rural development, to the potential of exotic new plant varieties to purchase decisions of European or Asian retail managers. Selected European markets are mirrored by the situation in Chinese and Thai markets. Finally, environmental issues concerning global trade of quality food are addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first study in the Western world to compare the relationship between food and politics in the countries of Eastern Europe, this book views the current food revolution as part of the modernization process. Robert Deutsch argues that the communist leaders in the Comecon countries increasingly link political stability and preservation of power to the problem of satisfying consumer demand. He also assesses the various social forces that have brought about the food revolution. The most important is the expanded working class, which is no longer willing to defer consumer demands to a hypothetical communist future. The CMEA countries thus face the dilemma of either gradually liberalizing their economies in order to meet growing consumer demands or resorting to repression. Neither of these options promises a long-term solution for implementing economic policies prescribed by Marxist-Leninist doctrine. Robert Deutsch presents case studies of Hungary, Bulgaria, and the German Democratic Republic as examples of the "relative success" of economic reforms. To a greater or lesser extent, these countries have opted for economic decentralization by liberalizing private ownership and pricing policy and by integrating planning with market-oriented concepts. The author compares this with the economic problems of the Soviet Union, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. The study is enhanced by an exhaustive bibliography, arranged topically and drawn from the specialized literature in several languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the sudden opening of the markets in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in 1989, there has been a growing need to investigate the fundamental changes occurring in the countries’marketing environment, the lucrative market opportunities created by the changes, and the inscrutable marketing practice followed by local and international companies. Marketing in Central and Eastern Europe helps you understand the changes taking place in these valuable and challenging markets and introduces you to the emerging opportunities and effective marketing strategies to be employed in the region. Researchers specializing in CEE business; managers of international companies operating in or contemplating entering CEE markets; and students studying CEE business, East-West business, or marketing in transitional economies will better understand the region by examining issues of cross- cultural inquiry, commonality, and market segmentation. Marketing in Central and Eastern Europe also provides you with: a region-relevant market analysis to determine environmental dimensions of emerging markets a preliminary report on market-entry strategies in Poland an assessment of foreign direct investment opportunities in Hungary a study of Western-style marketing applied in transitional economies an analysis of marketization and Westernization used as classifying dimensions information on increasing the validity of post-command economy research and application Although the book’s chapters cover a variety of topics and use different research approaches and methodologies, they have a common theme--there is a great interest in, and an equally great need to scientifically investigate, rapidly emerging market opportunities, marketing-environment issues, and marketing-strategy problems with respect to transitional economies of Central and Eastern Europe.
