Book excerpt: Over the last three decades, use of forage legumes in Ethiopia has increased exponentially to supplement protein requirement of ruminant animals. Some of these were Macroptilium atropurpureum, Desmodium, Stylosanthes, Lablab Purpureus, Vigna unguiculata, Vicia dasycarpa and Medicago sativa. For development purpose seeds have been imported from Australia, the Caribbean and Central America, Mediterranean and West Asia costing hundred thousand USD. Mostly, research on agronomic and adaptability of these legumes were undertaken by national and international institutes before releasing for development programs. However, it gradually became apparent that performance of many of the species has been found to be ambivalent so that some are failed to persist in the production system. The failure of these legumes could be as a result of absence of compatible and infective root nodule bacteria. So far, studies on nodulation and nitorgen fixation of these forage legumes have not been reported. This research book, therefore, provides invaluable data for researchers, development agents and livestock owners about the importance of compatible and effective indigenous rhizobia before importation

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Agrarian Studies, Hawassa University, language: English, abstract: This term paper aims to investigate challenges and prospects of forage seed production in Ethiopia. Seed production of forage species is a much earlier and less developed stage in the tropics and subtropics than in temperate regimes. Many of the current tropical forage cultivars were developed 50 years ago. Most of these grasses come from species new to agriculture. They have not undergone long period of domestication through hybridization and selection. Instead, they still retain many "wild characteristics" – attributes which aid their natural spread but pose difficulties for their commercial seed production. All of this poses a challenge to seed producers who must decide where the various crops should be grown for seed, the best management strategy to apply in each case and when and how they should be harvested to maximize seed yield and quality. Forage seed productions in tropical regions are characterized by variable production. Seed yield instability of the species may be a consequence of the contrasting environmental conditions that occur during the vegetative and reproductive growth of the crops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food insecurity is one of the major problems that the rural populations of Ethiopia are facing. Recurrent drought, natural resource degradation and population pressure are among the major causes of poor agricultural production, food insecurity and malnutrition. Integration gap in livestock-crop interactions, recognized as some of the problems facing forage development in Ethiopia acting bottleneck to livestock productivity. The main source of livestock feed in Ethiopia comes from natural pasture which are low in quality and quantity. Moreover, these areas are also diminishing in size due to conversion into farm land because of high human population growth. Rugged topography and high population pressure are causes of farm-land shortage. Due to this critical problem, growing forage crops as sole crop for animal feed is difficult. The only possibility is the use of land for food and forage production. Growing of forage legumes through intercropping is one way of introducing forage crops so as to use the small farm land for both crop and feed production. The system offers a potential for increasing fodder without appreciable reduction of grain production to satisfy livestock revolution
