Les sciences de l'éducation qui lui succèdent, à partir de 1967, ont pour fonction d'éclairer non seulement l'enseignement, mais l'éducation au sens large. Trois conceptions des sciences de l'éducation se font jour dès lors. La première revendique le caractère pluridisciplinaire du champ conçu comme juxtaposant des disciplines indépendantes. La deuxième conception est interdisciplinaire : aucune discipline ne peut à elle seule, saturer l'explication ou la compréhension de la question que l'on se pose : la collaboration entre disciplines est une obligation. Le troisième point de vue postule le caractère transdisciplinaire du champ de l'éducation. Les différentes disciplines sont dans l'obligation de faire œuvre de scientificité et de collaborer en ayant à l'esprit que les transformations de pratiques qu'elles ambitionnent ne peuvent advenir de cette seule scientificité. Dit autrement, les sciences de l'éducation conspirent à un horizon qu'elles savent impossibles à atteindre par leur seul apport. Elles véhiculent la certitude de leur incertitude. En ce sens elles constituent un singulier pluriel.
