Book excerpt: This stellar debut about losing and finding family, forging unlikely friendships, and searching for answers to big questions will resonate with fans of Erin Entrada Kelly and Rebecca Stead. The only thing Rosalind Ling Geraghty loves more than watching NASA launches with her dad is building rockets with him. When he dies unexpectedly, all Ro has left of him is an unfinished model rocket they had been working on together. Benjamin Burns doesn’t like science, but he can’t get enough of Spacebound, a popular comic book series. When he finds a sketch that suggests that his dad created the comics, he’s thrilled. Too bad his dad walked out years ago, and Benji has no way to contact him. Though Ro and Benji were only supposed to be science class partners, the pair become unlikely friends, and Ro even figures out a way to reunite Benji and his dad. But Benji hesitates, which infuriates Ro. Doesn’t he realize how much Ro wishes she could be in his place? As the two face bullying, grief, and their own differences, Benji and Ro try to piece together clues to some of the biggest questions in the universe. Book excerpt: Contemporary philosophers of mind often raise serious questions around the concepts of self, subjectivity, and ’the inner life’ on the grounds that such concepts have their origin in a discredited Cartesian metaphysics. The contention of this book is that the rejection of ’interiority’ and related concepts has been based on a time-honoured misreading of Descartes. In the course of exposing the misconceived anti-Cartesianism of a wide range of thinkers from Wittgenstein and Ryle to Dennett and Foucault, an attempt is made to clear a space for a new post-Cartesian conception of subjectivity - a conception of subjectivity which is consistent with at least some versions of materialism. The aim of this book is not to defend Cartesian dualism but to reclaim important concepts that have been anathematized by having been mistakenly associated with it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John R. Commons (1862-1945) was one of the most significant figures in the development of American economics, both owing to his economic thought and his impact on practical affairs. He began as an avid follower of the Social Gospel, committed to a program of economic and political reform, and later in his career he became the foremost authority on American labor unions. One of the founders of the Institutional school, Commons developed theories of the evolution of capitalism and of institutional change which continue to influence modern economics. The present volume, which was first published in 1934, is his autobiography. In it, Commons classifies himself as both a pragmatist and a Progressive. He collaborated closely with Wisconsin’s governor and U.S. senator Robert La Follette, Sr., until 1917, when he opposed La Follette’s anti-war position. He drafted innovative legislation on issues such as civil service reform, worker’s compensation, and utility regulation. He championed improved safety standards and unemployment benefits for workers, believing that financial support for them should come from corporations. He also advocated government mediation among industry, labor, and other competing interest groups. In the 1920s, Commons’ legislative initiatives on social welfare and federal economic coordination anticipated New Deal legislation. Commons also exerted long- term influence through his students, many of whom went on to occupy key academic, research, and policy positions. Today, he is remembered chiefly as the founder of modern American labor history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an innovative view of everyday reality. It clarifies how the spatial dimension of reality, as well as our personal and inter-personal perception and interaction with reality, aggravates human separateness at the expense of human connectedness. It shows how many urgent societal challenges are affected by an imbalance between spatial and the non-spatial aspects, and offers an analysis of the impoverishment of society, both in spatial terms (spatialisation) and in informational terms (digitalisation). Drawing on insights from quantum physics and depth psychology, it proposes an unorthodox view of the potential of humans, and of reality in itself, that was lost in this impoverishment. "I found this book hugely interesting, highly original and very well written. I haven’t come across these ideas presented in quite this way, and so the book could be considered a groundbreaking contribution" Dr Stephan Harding, Resident Ecologist Schumacher College, Author of 'Animate Earth'. "It rarely happens that we are invited by a scholarly text to look at reality in a basically different way than the one we are used to, at least in a way that is seductive and compelling at the same time. But this is precisely what the text of Pieter Brabers has done with me." Dr John Rijsman, Emeritus Professor of Social Psychology, Tilburg University.
