Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the proliferation of surrogacy storylines on TV, exploring themes of infertility, motherhood, parenting and family. It investigates how, despite reproductive technologies’ ability to flex contours of family, the shows’ narratives work to uphold the white, heterosexual, genetically-reproduced family as the ideal. In dialogue with responses from a range of female viewers, both mothers and non-mothers, the book scrutinises the construction of family ideology on television with studies including Coronation Street (1960-present), Giuliana & Bill (2009-2014), Rules of Engagement (2007-2013), The New Normal (2012-2013), Top of the Lake: China Girl (2017) The Handmaid’s Tale (2017-present) and film Baby Mama (2008). These studies raise a number of questions; is homosexuality only acceptable when it echoes heterosexual norms? Are female characters only fulfilled when they are genetic mothers? Does heterosexual romance override technology in the cure for infertility? While the answers to these questions may suggest that television still conforms to heteronormative narratives, this book importantly demonstrates that audiences desire alternative happy endings that show infertile female characters more positively and recognise alternative kinship formations as meaningful.

Book excerpt: Madeline Wolfe is a mischievous, mutinous, high-rise (the shortest she'd ever been was 'tall for her age') Aussie redhead, who can open beer bottles with her teeth and is on first name terms with every bartender in Bangkok. She's a woman in control of her life, and no man is ever going to tell her what to do. So how come she's ended up twelve thousand miles from home, in rainy London, with no friends, her visa about to expire, with no place to live – oh, yes, and pregnant? She fell in love with Alexander Drake, that's how. But she soon realises that Alex goes through the tunnel of love holding his own hand. He also has more secrets than MI5. Alex may not be the man she thought he was, but can she persuade him to be the man she needs him to be – preferably before the baby arrives? Praise for Kathy Lette: 'Fabulous, fast-paced, funny & unapologetically female. Nobody does it better.' DEBORAH FRANCES-WHITE, THE GUILTY FEMINIST 'Deliciously rude and darkly funny, but with compassion and humanity at its heart. Read with relish.' NICOLE KIDMAN 'Kathy Lette can turn from raunchy farce to the most tender emotion in a trice.' STEPHEN FRY

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of twins are told with astonishing frequency in contemporary culture. Films and novels from recent decades repeatedly tell of the stranglehold of brotherly love, the evil twin who steals her sister's lover, the homicidal mutant twin, the reunion of twins separated at birth, warring twins, and confusion between look-alikes. Twins in Contemporary Literature and Culture asks why we keep telling twin tales and how these have been transformed in recent retellings to reflect the preoccupations of the times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a special kind of persuasion with an incubation period of just seconds. It is a psychological secret weapon that can instantly disarm even the most discerning mind . . . This is the kind of high-wire psychological espionage which, in the right hands, can dismantle any conflict — but which in the wrong hands can kill. It is black-belt mind control. It doesn't just turn the tables, it kicks them over. From the malign but fascinating powers of psychopaths, serial killers and con men to the political genius of Winston Churchill —from Buddhist monks, grandmasters of martial arts, and magicians, to advertisers, salesmen, CEOs and frogs that mug each other —Kevin Dutton's brilliantly original and revelatory book explores what cutting-edge science can teach us about the techniques of persuasion. Provocative, and ultimately inspiring, Split-Second Persuasion reveals, for the first time, how each of us can learn to be that little bit more influential.

Melissa Doyle and Naima Brown, co-hosts of the popular Age Against the Machine podcast, ask all the right questions on thorny topics such as menopause, relationships, work, money, health and sex – with answers that inspire us to age with meaning and purpose. As we age, some of us might feel freer than ever, with the kids out of the home and more time to ourselves; for others, it can be a stressful time of invisibility and vulnerability. No two women will age in the same way, but there’s been precious little in the way of guidance for this part of our lives – until now. How to Age Against the Machine shares the wisdom of experts as well as real stories from women from all walks of life, normalising ageing and handing us a toolkit for these challenging yet transformative years. What are our own ageing superpowers? How can we tap into and celebrate our value and relevance to make the second part of our lives safe, healthy, connected and fulfilled? Melissa and Naima are your perfect guides for the ageing revolution!

Book excerpt: The Only Pregnancy Resource You’ll Ever Need The childbirth experience in India is indisputably far removed from the childbirth experience anywhere else in the world. Consequently it is critical to address the needs, alleviate the concerns and assuage the fears that every Indian mother (and father)-to-be inexorably undergoes during the process of pregnancy and childbirth. Most guidebooks in book stores are by foreign authors, and more often than not it is not easy to correlate with the information therein. The need of the hour was an Indian book, by Indian experts, for expectant Indian parents! Written by two experienced gynaecologists, Dr. Duru Shah and Dr. Safala Shroff and Ivor Vaz, Fetal Attraction is a classic one-stop-resource to pregnancy, labour, and early childbirth. You’ll find all the answers here to the most frequently asked questions before, during, and after pregnancy. Carefully styled to equip you with everything you need to know on the subject, this up-to-the-minute manual also takes into account the latest medical developments as well as changes in the modern women’s attitudes and lifestyles.
