Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foes in Ambush Still leaning a brown chin on a nearly black hand, and stirring up his Spider with the forked stick he held in the other paw, the boy simply tilted his head towards the dark opening under the farther end of the shed, an aperture that seemed to lead to nothing but blackness beyond. Book excerpt: The sun was just going down, a hissing globe of fire and torment. Already the lower limb was in contact with the jagged backbone of the mountain chain that rimmed the desert with purple and gold. Out on the barren, hard-baked flat in front of the corral, just where it had been unhitched when the paymaster and his safe were dumped soon after dawn, a weather-beaten ambulance was throwing unbroken a mile-long shadow towards the distant Christobal. The gateway to the east through the Santa Maria, sharply notched in the gleaming range, stood a day's march away, -a day's march now only made by night, for this was Arizona, and from the rising of the sun to the going down of the same anywhere south of that curdling mud-bath, the Gila, the only human beings impervious to the fierceness of its rays were the Apaches. "And they," growled the paymaster, as he petulantly snapped the lock of his little safe, "they're no more human than so many hyenas."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of One Who Suffered in the Lost Cause Evidently the enemy was fearful of an ambush, for we waited and waited but no attack was made. We were then ordered to return to our mounts. After mounting and forming in company alignment, a hollow square was formed into which Col. Porter rode. This was my first look at the man and soldier whom we were to follow unto death, if need be. He so much more than filled my expecta tions of him that I cannot express my sense of admiration, for he was certainly a knight, a cavalier, and a soldier. I have always regretted very much my brief association with him, for he was certainly justly called the Stonewall Jack son of North Missouri. Every eye was fixed on him when he spoke and said, My fellow Missourians! We have awaited the attack of the enemy; for some reason they have thought best not to do so; I need not say to you that in an event of a meeting with them, I shall depend upon you as loyal Missourians and Southerners to perform your whole duty. After these long years have passed, my memory fails me and I cannot repeat his words which were so expressive of the wrongs we had suffered, and were still suffering, for they stirred the heart and soul, until many eyes were suffused in tears. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Within the Enemy's Lines "Within The Enemy's Lines" is the second volume of "The Blue and the Gray Series." Like its predecessor, of course, its scenes are connected with the war of the Rebellion, and perhaps the writer ought to be thankful that he is not required in such a work to rise to the dignity of history, but he believes that all his events were possible, and that every one of them has had its parallel in the actual occurrences of the historic period of which he writes. In fact, some of the experiences of the actors in the terrible drama of a quarter of a century ago would pass more readily for fiction than for reality, and detailed on the pages of a story would be deemed impossible by the conservative reader. The deadly perils to which the early settlers were daily and hourly exposed from the incursions of a savage foe - the ambush and the midnight surprise, their sufferings while undergoing the horrors of captivity or the agonies of torture; when we think of these things - they were common occurrences in those early days - we are enabled to realize in some small degree the cost and the value of the peaceful, happy homes we now enjoy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jasper County, Missouri, in the Civil War Partisan bands serving the south are spoken of in this volume as guerrillas. It should be understood that the word guerrilla does not carry any sense of appro brium in itself. It merely means one who is not a mem ber of a regular military organization and who carries on guerrilla warfare. Confederate officers frequently speak of the Missouri partisans as guerrillas and in some sections of the country there were federal guerrillas. For instance the Kentuckians that mortally wounded and captured Quantrill were known as Terrill's Federal Guerrillas. The word bushwhacker may or may not be used in a degratory sense. It seems to carry the sense of one who fights from ambush or concealment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
