This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inclusive, cross-cultural study rethinks the nexus between engineering, development, and culture. It offers diverse commentary from a range of disciplinary perspectives on how the philosophies of today’s cultural triumvirate—American, European and Chinese—are shaped and given nuance by the cross-fertilization of engineering and development. Scholars from the humanities and social sciences as well as engineers themselves reflect on key questions that arise in this relational context, such as how international development work affects the professional views, identities, practice and ethics of engineers. The first volume to offer a systematic and collaborative study that cuts across continental boundaries, the book delineates the kinds of skills and competences that tomorrow’s engineering success stories will require, and analyzes fascinating aspects of the interplay between engineering and philosophy, such as how traditionally Chinese ways of thinking can influence modern engineering practice in the world’s most populous country. China’s problematic mix of engineering woes and wonders, from the high-profile crash on its high-profile rail network to its ‘bird’s nest’ Olympic stadium, adds to the urgency for reform, while Europe’s Enlightenment-informed legal frameworks are contrasted with Chinese mechanisms in their governance of the field of nanotechnology, a crucial element of future technical evolution. Fascinating and compelling in equal measure, this volume addresses one of the topics at the leading edge of humanity’s quest to survive, and to thrive.

This book was released on 2013-02-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the UK we teach young people to become computer users and consumers rather than programmers and software engineers. This is creating a chronic skills gap in ICT. We need around 82,000 engineers and technicians just to deal with retirements up to 2016 and 830,000 SET professionals by 2020. On the plus side, the Government's proposal to include computer science as a fourth science option to count towards the EBac is welcomed. The Committee also welcomes the EBac's focus on attainment of mathematics and science GCSEs but is concerned that subjects such as Design and Technology (D&T) might be marginalised. A Technical Baccalaureate (TechBac) is being designed but if it is to be a success, schools should be incentivised to focus on the TechBac by making it equivalent to the EBac. Reforms to vocational education following the Wolf Review meant that Level 2 of the Engineering Diploma, a qualification highly regarded, would count as equivalent to one GCSE despite requiring curriculum time and effort equivalent to several GCSEs. The Engineering Diploma, however, is currently being redesigned as four separate qualifications. The Committee also expressed concerns over the Department for Education's (DfE) lack of clarity on its research budget, and use of evidence in decision-making. The DfE needs to place greater focus on gathering evidence before changes to qualifications are made, and must leave sufficient time for evidence to be gathered on the effectiveness of policies before introducing further change. The possibility of gathering evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) should be seriously considered

Book Synopsis Scenario-focused Engineering by : Austina De Bonte
Download or read book Scenario-focused Engineering written by Austina De Bonte and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 2014 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Great technology alone is rarely sufficient today to ensure a products success. At Microsoft, scenario-focused engineering is a customer-centric, iterative approach used to design and deliver the deeper experiences and emotional engagement customers demand in new products. In this book, youll discover the proven practices and lessons learned from real-world implementations of this approach, including:Why design matters: Understand a competitive landscape where customers are no longer satisfied by products that are merely useful, but respond instead to products they crave using. What it means to be customer focused: Recognize that you are not the customer, understand customers can have difficulty articulating what they want, and apply techniques that uncover their unspoken needs. How to iterate effectively: Implement a development system that is flexible enough to respond to early and continuous feedback, and enables experimentation with multiple ideas and feedback loops simultaneously. How to bridge the culture gap: In an engineering environment traditionally rooted in strong analytics, the ideas and practices for scenario-focused engineering may not be intuitive. Learn how to change team mindset from deciding what a product, service, or device will do, to discovering what customers actually want and what will work for them in real-life scenarios. Connections with Lean and Agile approaches: See the connections, gaps, and overlaps among the Lean, Agile, and Scenario-Focused Engineering methodologies, and achieve a more holistic view of software development.

This allows researchers to apply multiple designs to describe, analyze and evaluate the history, current issues and the future direction of education in regional and international contexts.
Book Synopsis Strategic Excellence in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industries by : Gerhard Plenert
Download or read book Strategic Excellence in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industries written by Gerhard Plenert and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Excellence in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industries is a process of applied strategic thinking designed to develop a strategy empowered with the agility to adapt to changing circumstances and to drive a high performing culture of ideal behaviors. It is infused with the insight and the thought leadership of the Shingo Model and the scientific thinking of Lean Six Sigma. The book goes beyond the classic approach to strategic planning by driving effective execution of the strategy through the embedment of collective ownership and organization-wide alignment into the entire process. Significant advances in strategic planning and management have been developed over decades of learning and practice. Many of those advances, however, have been developed in the manufacturing industry and have not been translated into terms easily applicable to the A/E/C (Architectural / Engineering / Construction) industry. This book incorporates current best practices from cutting edge organizations around the globe and presents those in a way that they can easily be applied to A/E/C organizations through an efficient and effective process.

Download or read book Advances in Intelligent, Flexible, and Lean Management and Engineering written by Machado, Carolina and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-11 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In organizations today, knowledge on how to manage in a green environment is of a particular emphasis and is an important discussion topic amongst academics, researchers, and managers. Undertakings such as sustainability, not only in an environmental perspective but also in an organizational perspective; recycling; re-use; low costs; waste reduction; and high productivity are only some, among many others, that require a break in traditional management paradigms. Present organizations need to be managed with different models where innovation and change are key words as they drive the organization to success. At this level, green management appears as a new way to manage and understand organizations, making them more strategic and competitive in the markets where they are and where they will be in the future. Advances in Intelligent, Flexible, and Lean Management and Engineering introduces the newest models, theories, and tools along with the practices, policies, and strategies for management and engineering. This book reflects on the experiences and thoughts about the state-of-the-art research in the green management and engineering fields, as well as the future direction of this scope of research. It covers important topics such as green transformational leadership, artificial intelligence, production models, sustainable factories, and more. This book is an essential resource tool for engineers, executives, managers, economists, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students looking for information on the advances in management and engineering for businesses.
