Book excerpt: A joint effort by the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory (HEDL) and Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) has produced a preliminary design for a Fusion Materials Irradiation Test Facility (FMIT) that uses a high-power linear accelerator to fire a deuteron beam into a high-speed jet of molten lithium. The result is a continuous energy spectrum of neutrons with a 14-MeV average energy which can irradiate material samples to projected end-of-life levels in about 3 years, with a total accumulated fluence of 1021 to 1022 n/cm2.

Book excerpt: The Fusion Materials Irradiation Test Facility (FMIT) is a high-energy, high-flux neutron source for fusion materials development. The FMIT linear accelerator will produce a 35 MeV beam of deuterons that generates high-energy neutrons by a nuclear stripping reaction with flowing liquid lithium targets. The targets will be located in two identical irradiation test cells, either of which will provide an irradiation volume of 10 cm3 at a neutron flux of 1015 n/cm2-s and 500 cm3 at a flux of 1014 n/cm2-s. FMIT has been authorized by the US Congress and will be constructed and operated by the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory (HEDL) at Richland, Washington, in collaboration with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) which is providing the accelerator design. The project is currently entering the detailed design phase, targeting for start of construction in early 1980 and operaion in 1983-84. Research and development programs are underway at both HEDL and LASL to resolve uncertainties in the lithium target and accelerator designs.

This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) is proposed as an advanced accelerator-based neutron source for high-flux irradiation testing of large-sized fusion reactor components. The facility would require only small extensions to existing accelerator and target technology originally developed for the Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) facility. At the extended facility, neutrons would be produced by a 0.1-A beam of 35-MeV deuterons incident upon a liquid lithium target. The volume available for high-flux (>1015 n/cm2-s) testing in IFMITF would be over a liter, a factor of about three larger than in the FMIT facility. This is because the effective beam current of 35-MeV deuterons on target can be increased by a factor of ten to 1A or more. Such an increase can be accomplished by funneling beams of deuterium ions from the radio-frequency quadruple into a linear accelerator and by taking advantage of recent developments in accelerator technology. Multiple beams and large total current allow great variety in available testing. For example, multiple simultaneous experiments, and great flexibility in tailoring spatial distributions of flux and spectra can be achieved. 5 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: The Fusion Materials Irradiation Test Facility (FMIT) is being built to study neutron radiation effects in candidate fusion reactor materials. The FMIT will yield high fluence data in a fusion-like neutron radiation environment produced by the interaction of a 0.1A, 35 MeV deuteron beam with a flowing lithium target. The design of the facility as a whole is driven by a high availability requirement. The variety of radiation environments in the facility requires the use of diverse and extensive shielding. Shielding design throughout the FMIT must accommodate the need for maintenance and operations access while providing adequate personnel and equipment protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary rf system design for the accelerator portion of the Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) Facility is in progress. The 35-MeV, 100-mA, cw deuteron beam will require 6.3 MW rf power at 80 MHz. Initial testing indicates the EIMAC 8973 tetrode is the most suitable final amplifier tube for each of a series of 15 amplifier chains operating at 0.5-MW output. To satisfy the beam dynamics requirements for particle acceleration and to minimize beam spill, each amplifier output must be controlled to +-1° in phase and the field amplitude in the tanks must be held within a 1% tolerance. These tolerances put stringent demands on the rf phase and amplitude control system.

Book excerpt: Nuclear data requirements are reviewed for the design of the Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) facility. This accelerator-based facility, now in the early stages of construction at Hanford, will provide high fluences in a fusion-like radiation environment for the testing of materials. The nuclear data base required encompasses the entire range of neutron energies from thermal to 50 MeV. In this review, we consider neutron source terms, cross sections for thermal and bulk shield design, and neutron activation for the facility.

Book excerpt: For fusion reactors to become operational, one of the many problems to be solved is to find materials able to withstand the intense bombardment of 14-MeV neutrons released by the fusion process. The development of alloys less likely to become damaged by this neutron bombardment will require years of work, making it desirable to begin studies in parallel with other aspects of fusion power generators. The Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) Facility, to be built at the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory (HEDL), Richland, Washington, will provide a high neutron flux and a neutron energy spectrum representative of fusion reactor conditions in volumes adequate to screen and qualify samples of candidate fusion reactor materials. FMIT's design goal is to provide an irradiation test volume of 10 cm3 at a neutron flux of 1015 n/cm2-s, and 500 cm3 at a flux of 1014 n/cm2-s. This will not allow testing of actual components, but samples in the most intense flux region can be subjected to accelerated life testing, accumulating in one year the total number of neutrons seen by a fusion reactor in 10 to 20 years of operation.

This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) facility is currently being designed for use in the study of neutron radiation effects in fusion reactor materials. This facility will make use of the intense source of high energy neutrons produced by a beam of 35 MeV deuterons incident upon a thick target of liquid lithium. In the forward direction, the neutron spectrum from this source peaks near 14 MeV as in a fusion device. However, the neutron energy spectrum in the FMIT facility will be broader and there will be a significant number of neutrons emitted with energies up to about 30 MeV. A small fraction will be emitted with even higher energies, up to a maximum of 50 MeV. Since ENDF/B evaluations of neutron-cross section data extend only to 20 MeV (with little data above 15 MeV) there is a great need for neutron data from 15 to 50 MeV for the FMIT facility. Furthermore, nuclear reaction cross sections induced by deuterons up to 35 MeV are a vital part of design and operation considerations, and are even less well understood than the neutron data. The time scale of the design of the FMIT facility has been so rapid that it has precluded large amounts of new nuclear data coming from outside the project. This report outlines work carried out within the FMIT project to supply the most immediate nuclear data needs. Nuclear data needs for remaining design considerations and for long-term operational uses will be discussed.

Book excerpt: The rf system for the Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) accelerator is currently in the design phase at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL). The 35-MeV, 100-mA deuteron beam will require approximately 6 MW of rf power at 80 MHz. The EIMAC 8973 power tetrode, capable of a 600-kW cw output, has been chosen as the final amplifier tube for each of 15 amplifier chains. The final power stage of each chain is designed to perform as a linear Class B amplifier. Each low-power rf system (less than or equal to 100W) is to be phase, amplitude, and frequency controlled to provide a drive signal for each high-power amplifier. Beam dynamics for particle acceleration and for minimal beam spill require each rf amplifier output to be phase controlled to +-1°. The amplitude of the accelerating field must be held to +-1%. A varactor-tuned electronic phase shifter and a linear phase detector are under development for use in this system. To complement hardware development, analog computer simulations are being performed to optimize the closed-loop control characteristics of the system.
