Book excerpt: "Methods, ranging from rigorous and complicated to simple and approximate, are presented for estimating flying qualities in accordance with such specifications as MIL-F-8785 (ASG). Aerodynamic and inertial data are assumed to be known. Intended mainly for design use, the report gives enough detail to indicate derivations and conditions for validity. Topics include the static and dynamic, controls-fixed and controls-free aspects of aircraft stability, control, and trim. Although emphasis is on linear analysis, methods are given or indicated for such nonlinear problems as drag, pitch-up, inertial coupling, and spinning. Appendixes give an introduction to aeroelastic effects, ways to analyze control tabs, a derivation of the controls-free equations of motion, and an introduction to root locus analysis." -- page iii.

The symposium was planned and ran by the Flight Control Division, specifically the Flying Qualities Group and the Control Techniques Group as part of an ongoing effort to revise and upgrade both MIL-F-8785C, Military Specification, Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes, and MIL-F-9490D, Flight Control System-Design, Installation and Test of Piloted Aircraft, General Specification For. Specialists from both the flying qualities and flight control system disciplines were gathered in Dayton from both industry and government agencies. Formal and informal presentations, plus workshop discussions, were structured around proposed draft versions of the new Flying Qualities MIL-Standard and Handbook and the new Flight Control Systems MIL-Specification and Handbook. This report contains a record of the presentations and discussions as submitted by the individual authors.
Book Synopsis Background Information and User Guide for MIL-F-8785B (ASG) by : Charles Ray Chalk
Download or read book Background Information and User Guide for MIL-F-8785B (ASG) written by Charles Ray Chalk and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The document is published in support of Military Specification MIL-F-8785B, 'Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes.' It was compiled after an extensive literature review and many meetings and discussions with personnel from essentially all concerned civilian and governmental organizations. The primary purpose is to explain the concept and philosophy underlying MIL-F-8785B and to present some of the data and arguments upon which the requirements were based. A secondary purpose is to present what are believed to be the important governing variables in the field of flying qualities and to define their significance and relationship to each other. The significance of such mission- oriented factors as airplane class, flight phase, flight condition, loading and configuration is discussed, as is the treatment of failure states. The document should also, to a degree, serve as a summary of the state of the flying qualities art as determined from operational experience, flight test, experiment, analysis and theory.
Book Synopsis Aviation Safety and Pilot Control by : National Research Council
Download or read book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Download or read book V/STOL Dynamics, Control, and Flying Qualities written by James A. Franklin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents materials that constituted the lectures presented by the author as part of Course AA 234 Dynamics, Control, and Flying Qualities of V/STOL Aircraft that was taught in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. It covers representative operations of vertical and short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft, a discussion of the pilot's strategy in controlling these aircraft, the equations of motion pertinent to V/STOL tasks, and their application in the analysis of longitudinal and lateral-directional control in hover and forward flight. Following that development, which applies to the characteristics of the basic airframe and propulsion system, the text concludes with a discussion of the contributions of control augmentation in specific flight tasks and of the integration of modern electronic displays with these controls.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was conducted to validate military specification MIL-F- 8785B(ASG), 'Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes, ' dated 7 August 1969, Interim Amendment-1 (USAF), dated 31 March 1971, by performing a detail comparison of its requirements with the known characteristics of the Lockheed C- 5A and pilot comments on them. The comparison was based primarily on existing flight test data supplemented by analytical data as required for this evaluation process. Paragraph by paragraph validations of discrepancies are noted, resolution attempted if necessary, and any recommendations given. In addition, recommendations are made enumerating experimental and analytical investigations beyond the scope of this study which will provide data for further validation and updating of the requirements.

This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-fl ight simulation experiments performed in 1967 with a variable-stabil ity aircraft during the author's stay at Princeton University, motivated the study of handl ing characteristics of future transport aircraft with closed-loop fl ight control systems. In 1972, the first experiment took place at the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, using one of its research aircraft. In anticipation of expected developments in (digital) fl ight control technology, the research programme following the first experiments was aimed at the establ ishment of quantitative handl ing qual ities criteria. An appreciable part of that programme has been sponsored by the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace Programs (Nederlands Instituut voor VI iegtuigontwikkel ing en Ruimtevaart) and the Department of Civil Aviation of the Netherlands (Rijksluchtvaartdienst). In 1981, a thorough review of the extensive and valuable data gathered was started. The result, presented in this book, was also included in the author's thesis for a Ph.D. degree of the Delft University of Technology. To introduce the reader to the multi-discipl inary field of handl ing qual ities research, introductory chapters are presented on longitudinal aircraft dynamics, closed-loop fl ight control systems using non-mechanical signal transmission, human pilot dynamics, hand I ing qual ities assessment techniques, and the present status of handl ing qual ity criteria.

Book Synopsis Comparison of the Control Anticipation Parameter and the Bandwidth Criterion During the Landing Task by : David A. Kivioja
Download or read book Comparison of the Control Anticipation Parameter and the Bandwidth Criterion During the Landing Task written by David A. Kivioja and published by . This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many handling qualities criteria have been developed which predict pilot opinion of landing aircraft. MIL-STD-1797A, 'Flying Qualities of Piloted Aircraft' lists six different criteria. However, applying all six criteria to one aircraft can lead to conflicting results. The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) along with the Flight Dynamics Laboratory have conducted research to evaluate differences among the handling qualities criteria in MIL- STD-1797A. The overall objective of this thesis was to determine similarities and discrepancies between the Control Anticipation Parameter (CAP) and bandwidth criteria, and to evaluate the advantage of including a dropback criterion with the bandwidth criterion. Results of this research will be used to derive a more clear-cut, generally acceptable, comprehensive flying qualities criteria predicting pilot opinion for the next revision of MIL-STD-1797A. Research was conducted in two phases. Phase I was conducted at AFIT. There the CAP domain was mapped onto the bandwidth and bandwidth with dropback criteria revealing where the criteria agreed and disagreed. Phase II was conducted at the USAF Test Pilot School. The test team used the Variable-Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA) to simulate aircraft and obtain actual pilot opinion in the areas of agreement and conflict found in Phase I.
