Download or read book Can Squid Fly? written by Tony Rice and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the same question and answer format of his highly successful first book Do Whales Get the Bends?, marine expert Tony Rice sets out to answer another selection of general interest questions about the sea, sea life and man's relationship with the oceans. Questions tackled in this book include: * Did the Mediterranean once dry up? * What are sea wasps? * Why is a ship's control room called a bridge? * What is the Pacific Garbage Patch? * What causes the Northern/Southern Lights? Written in the same entertaining style as the first book, and once again illustrated with black and white line drawings, Can Squid Fly? will answer these and many more intriguing questions. Inspired by questions raised whilst the author was a guest lecturer on cruise ships, this fascinating and informative book is a light-hearted yet surprisingly informative read for anyone interested in the sea. Each bite-sized entry is no more than two or three pages long, making it ideal to dip into.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The little-known WWII story of the Polish Air Force fliers who played a crucial role in the Battle of Britain and beyond. To the Polish volunteers who flew and fought so brilliantly and tenaciously throughout the Battle of Britain, the United Kingdom was known as “Last Hope Island.” Many lost their lives, such as Antoni Ostowicz. Many achieved glory and became aces—such as Glowacki, Skalski, and Witorzenc. The RAF came to depend on these men, with over one hundred Polish pilots supporting almost thirty fighter squadrons, most especially 302, 303, and 307 (night fighter). The result of years of research, Robert Gretzyngier’s book includes detailed combat descriptions, personal accounts from combat reports, memoirs, and diaries from the Polish, British, and German perspective, with in-depth biographical data of all Polish pilots, including full RAF and PAF careers and much tabular material in appendix form. Poles in Defence of Britain is a tremendous account of Polish contribution in those hectic days before the RAF began to take the offensive across the Channel, with many previously unpublished photographs from private collections.

Book Synopsis Seventy Years of Birdwatching by : H.G Alexander
Download or read book Seventy Years of Birdwatching written by H.G Alexander and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about birdwatching, birdwatchers and, above all, birds. It is, in some measure, also a history of the development of modern ornithology in Britain - although the author's birdwatching extended over parts of three continents, Europe, India and North America. Seventy Years of Birdwatching is not truly an autobiography, there is too little about the author in it, though the personality of this exceptional, shy and gentle man comes through. H. G. Alexander began birdwatching in earnest in 1898 and has never stopped. He has met or corresponded with most of the leading ornithologists of this century; his first article in British Birds appeared in 1909, and it may surprise many to discover how much of practical ornithology that is deliberated today was debated and practised so many years ago. During more than seventy years the author has witnessed important changes in resident and migrant bird populations in Britain. Dungeness, for example, was almost as uninhabited as the moon when he first knew it and Kentish Plovers bred there by the score, but Carrion Crows were a rarity. Over the years he saw the gradual decline of the Red-backed Shrike, Corncrake and Wryneckbut he was instrumental in bringing one bird to Britain, the hitherto 'undiscovered' Willow Tit which he, with others, helped to identify. Fifty years ago H. G. Alexander had already covered scores of six-inch Ordnance Survey maps with his mapping records and these, together with his notebooks and correspondence with contemporaries, supply an absorbing glimpse of a birdwatching era that was fascinatingly like and yet unlike our own. Perhaps this is why today's birdwatcher has only to turn the pages to be enthralled.

Download or read book Contact Flying written by Jim Dulin and published by Contact Flying. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike conventional aviation authors and instructors I do not teach primary flying, crop dusting, pipeline patrol flying, bush flying, helicopter medical evacuation flying, and air to ground gunnery using instruments inside the aircraft as the primary situational awareness tool. Rather I teach Dutch rolls, slow flight and stalls over the runway, the energy management turns, use of ground effect on all takeoffs, the brisk walk apparent rate of closure approach, hover taxi in fixed wing aircraft, and low level low power mountain flying using sights, sounds, smells, and kinetics. Sight is used 99.9% of the time looking at the ground. Airspeed, nor any other instrument is used in takeoff or landing. This text teaches the art of flying in the old style at low level using ground references. Its author has over sixteen thousand hours of flying Army helicopters, crop dusters, and pipeline patrol airplanes at three feet to five hundred feet above ground level.
