Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flying Machines Today Speaking with some experience, the writer has found that instruction in the principles underlying the science and sport of aviation must be vitalized by some contemporaneous study of what is being accomplished in the air. No one of the revolutionizing inventions of man has progressed as rapidly as aerial navigation. The "truths" of today are the absurdities of tomorrow. The suggestion that some grasp of the principles and a very fair knowledge of the current practices in aeronautics may be had without special technical knowledge came almost automatically. If this book is comprehensible to the lay reader, and if it conveys to him even a small proportion of the writer's conviction that flying machines are to profoundly influence our living in the next generation, it will have accomplished its author's purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flying Machines: Practice and Design, Their Principles, Construction and Working This small work is offered as a general review of the flying machine problems, and an attempt has been made to lay down the numerical values of the elements of the aeroplane machine's design and construction, and its natural and fundamental principles. This has not hitherto been done in such a way as to enable a designer to proceed in a methodical manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flying Machines: Construction and Operation; A Practical Book Which Shows, in Illustrations, Working Plans and Text, How to Build and Navigate the Modern Airship In the stating of a technical proposition so it may be clearly understood by people not versed in technical mat ters it becomes absolutely necessary to use language much different from that which an expert would employ, and this has been done in this volume. No man of ordinary intelligence can read this book without obtaining a clear, comprehensive knowledge of flying machine construction and operation. He will learn, not only how to build, equip, and manipulate an aeroplane in actual flight, but will also gain a thorough understanding of the principle upon which the suspension in the air of an object much heavier than the air is made possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flying Machines, Past, Present, and Future: A Popular Account of Flying Machines, Dirigible Balloons and Aeroplanes How to make a successful flying machine is receiving attention in all civilised countries. The custom of regarding any attempt to navigate the air as an indication of madness on the part of the experimenter has passed away, and is now replaced by a feeling of anxiety that one's own country shall not be forestalled in the art of aviation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Balloons, Airships and Flying Machines That night of 1782, therefore, marks the first great step ever made towards the conquest of the sky. But to better understand the history of Aeronautics - a word that means the sailing of the air - We must go back far be yond the days of the Montgolfier brothers. For in all times and in all ages men have wanted to fly. David wished for the wings of a dove to fly away and be at rest, and since his time, and before it, how many have not longed to take flight and sail away in the boundless, glorious realms above, to explore the fleecy clouds, and to float free in the blue vault Of heaven. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artificial and Natural Flight I'r was in 1856 that I first had my attention called to the subject of flying machines. My father, who was a profound thinker and a clever mechanician, seems to have given the subject a great deal of thought, and to have matured a plan identical with what has been proposed by hundreds since that time. I was then sixteen years of age, and a fairly good mechanician, and any new thing in the mechanical line interested me immensely. Book excerpt: Flying Machines: construction and operation; a practical book which shows, in illustrations, working plans and text, how to build and navigate the modern airship: Large Print Octave Chanute CHAPTER I. EVOLUTION OF TWO-SURFACE FLYING MACHINE. By Octave Chanute. I am asked to set forth the development of the "two-surface" type of flying machine which is now used with modifications by Wright Brothers, Farman, Delagrange, Herring and others. This type originated with Mr. F. H. Wenham, who patented it in England in 1866 (No. 1571), taking out provisional papers only. In the abridgment of British patent Aeronautical Specifications (1893) it is described as follows: "Two or more aeroplanes are arranged one above the other, and support a framework or car containing the motive power. The aeroplanes are made of silk or canvas stretched on a frame by wooden rods or steel ribs. When manual power is employed the body is placed horizontally, and oars or propellers are actuated by the arms or legs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys Book of Model Aeroplanes How to Build and Fly, Them: With the Story of the Evolution of the Flying Machine It was now found that a very little tilt ing of the planes upward or downward would serve to right the machine when it leaned over The secret, like so many others, was gained by watching the flights of birds. You have perhaps seen a great albatross or sea gull soar without the slightest effort and apparently without motion. Look more closely and you will see that the tips of the broad wings move slightly from time to time, while the main body of the wings remains rigid, which is the great secret of stability in flight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pocket-Book of Aeronautics The widespread interest in aeronautical matters at the present time has been mainly aroused by the success which has at length rewarded the efforts of inventors in designing air-ships and flying-machines. These, although very far from perfect, can at least be maintained aloft for long periods and be steered in any desired direction, representing a great advance on anything achieved at the beginning of the last decade. "A start may be obtained by lowering the legs and running down hill or the machine may be started from a moving carriage. One or more screw propellers may be applied for propelling when steam power is employed." On June 27, 1866, Mr. Wenham read before the "Aeronautical Society of Great Britain," then recently organized, the ablest paper ever presented to that society, and thereby breathed into it a spirit which has continued to this day. In this paper he described his observations of birds, discussed the laws governing flight as to the surfaces and power required both with wings and screws, and he then gave an account of his own experiments with models and with aeroplanes of sufficient size to carry the weight of a man.
