Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flueric-electronic system has been developed to continuously monitor the concentration of carbon dioxide and periodically measure the concentration of oxygen in respiratory gases. The sensor consists of two miniature flueric oscillators whose acoustic frequency depends on CO2 concentration; the sensor is coupled to a pressure transducer. The signal is electronically processed, and the gas concentration is indicated by a calibrated dial. The signal may also be recorded. The system has a low sampling rate (7 cc/sec) induced by a flueric suction unit operated by low-pressure gas. The humidity and temperature of the samplied gas are controlled by a humidity control unit operated by a flueric vortex tube. The system has been calibrated and is accurate to better than 0.3 percent carbon dioxide and 1 percent oxygen. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to design and develop a compact airborne CO2 sensor unit capable of sensing and measuring the CO2 content of manned, sealed environments. A prototype carbon dioxide sensor was designed, built, and calibrated. The sensor operates by alternately comparing the infrared absorption of the air sample at 4.26 microns, where CO2 exhibits strong absorption and at 3.90 microns where it has little absorption. A two color rotating filter provides sampling 200 times per second. The unit weighs 10 pounds and has a power consumption of 70 watts. The instrument is capable of detecting a concentration of at least 0.30% CO2 and has full scale capability to 5%. (Author).

Book excerpt: Flueric bridge sensors have been developed for the Air Force as candidate sensors for measuring gas concentrations and temperatures in life support systems aboard aircraft. Three manifold assemblies -- each containing two flueric concentration sensors and one flueric temperature sensor -- were designed, built, and laboratory tested. In addition, equations describing the theoretical performance of both types of sensors were derived. Measured resistive coefficients for all bridge elements show very little nonideal effects for flows below 3.5 cu cm/sec. For one of the concentration sensors, known mixtures of carbon dioxide in nitrogen were measured; the results were in complete agreement with the theoretical predictions. No temperature-sensing data were gathered in this program. (Author).

Book excerpt: The purpose of the program was to develop a novel carbon dioxide sensor based on obtaining changes in the electrical resistance of anion-exchange resin proportional to the ambient partial pressure of carbon dioxide. The change in resistance is due to the increased ionization of a weakly ionized base in the presence of a sightly acid gas. A laboratory program was conducted to evaluate the response of various types of weak-base ion-exchange polymers to carbon dioxide concentrations in the range of 0 to 4%. The optimum material consisted of a condensation polymer of resorcinol, formaldehyde and triethylenetetramine. A laboratory model of the CO2 Sensor was fabricated using these sensing elements in the form of small, thin strips. In order to minimize the effects of humidity and temperature, the model contained two sensing elements, one being a reference. A guard chamber was provided to absorb any strongly-acid gases. Electrical readout is made on a balancing potentiometer with an earphone detector. The Sensor is small (about 50 cubic inches), weighs less than 6 ounces, has a power requirement of less than 0.5 watts, and its operation is independent of gravity. (Author).

Book excerpt: An engineering and clinical evaluation was conducted on two prototype medical devices. These two devices were the Army Flueric CO2-O2 Concentration Monitor-Model I and the Army Heart Monitor-Model IV. The engineering evaluation was conducted to determine the performance limitations, safety, calibration, and suitable areas for the clinical evaluation. The clinical evaluation was conducted to determine performance and possible areas of utilization. The results of the evaluation of the Flueric CO2-O2 Monitor indicate that adequate continuous physiologic measurements of respiratory gas concentrations can be easily obtained with flueric sensors. The results of the evaluation of the Heart Monitor indicate that this device should be restricted to exclude Type A patients. The major areas for utilization of the device appear to be transport vehicles, intermediate care monitoring, and emergency carts. (Modified author abstract).
