Book excerpt: The North American Tallgrass Prairie, which once covered an expansive area, has become increasingly fragmented and isolated, now consisting of a fraction of its original distribution. The understanding of timing and duration of flowering in plants (phenology) could shed light on how habitat fragmentation affects reproductive success and variation in a population. Flowering phenology of the prairie plant, Echinacea angustifolia, was followed in four prairie remnants in Douglas County, Minnesota during Summer, 2011. Patterns of phenology among remnants were compared. Flower heads from one site, Staffanson Prairie Preserve, were collected to determine seed set. Phenology and seed set were compared to determine the relationship between flowering time and reproductive success. Sites demonstrated variation in phenology and peak flowering date, while, at Staffanson, phenology patterns indicated no significant correlation between flowering time and seed set.
