The Gardener's Botanical contains definitions of more than 5,000 plant names—from abbreviatus ("shortened") to zonatus ("with bands")—along with more than 350 color illustrations. Scientific plant names are an invaluable tool for those who understand them. Formed from Greek and, more commonly, from Latin root words, not only do they make it possible for gardeners and botanists to communicate, they also contain a wealth of hidden information. The Gardener's Botanical is the key to unlocking these secrets. This guide contains a breathtaking array of botanical names in alphabetical order. Each word is listed with a pronunciation guide, definition, example plant, and, where appropriate, etymology. Also included in this illuminating guide are special features on important plant genera, fact boxes, essays focusing on the history and importance of Latin names and botanical illustrations, and an index of common names with more than 2,000 popular plants, cross-referenced with their binomial name in Latin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Botany The order of treatment here adopted is first to give a general notion of the world-wide distribution and importance Of plants; then to enable the pupil to see the whole plant as a working machine; then to discuss more in detail the structure and work Of the higher plants, each region of which performs a definite part Of the work of the whole machine; then very briefly to present a general view of the great groups. Although through out the book the plants used as the basis Of study are usually those of common interest, a few of the most practical topics, such as timber and forestry, weeds, plant breeding, and the plant industries, are given separate treatment, with as much detail as is possible in a brief course. The structure, functions, and ecological relations of plants are presented throughout the book in a synthetic manner. Questions pertaining to the interpretation and application of different features Of plant life are introduced in the text and at the ends of chapters. Other similar questions raised by the teacher will be found helpful in presenting problems that the pupil should be able to solve in connection with his studies. Such problems help to develop the constant attitude Of inquiry which science attempts to establish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Relations: A First Book of Botany 6. Plant functions - Whether plants have many organs, or few organs, or no organs, it should be remembered that they are all at work, and are all doing the same essential things. Although many different kinds of work are being carried on by plants, they may all be put under two heads, nutrition and reproduction. Every plant, whether simple or complex, must care for two things (1) its own support (nutrition), and the production of other plants like. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Plants: An Introduction to Botany and Plant Ecology The course of work followed in this book is directed, in the main, to the establishment of the fundamental principles of Plant Physiology. Plant Morphology receives a less extended treatment; but this aspect of the subject is freely introduced in the discussion of Plant Ecology, i. E. The relation of the structure and functions of plants to their habitat. More space has been devoted to Ecology than is usual in an ele mentary text-book, but the Author believes that this aspect of plant life gives to field work a more definite aim, and broadens the outlook of the student by linking up Botany with the study of climate, geology, and topography. Similarly, to avoid the weariness of lessons dealing merely with the comparison of forms, the Author has throughout treated the forms of roots, stems, and leaves in relation to their functions and to the habitat of the plant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Springtime Flowers Easy Lessons in Botany Mamma laughingly declared that the old adage about anticipation was based on truth, for the bustle and pleasure of getting ready for the trip did much more towards bringing about a cure than all the bitter medicine which Dr. Carlton had prescribed. At last all was ready, and, despite the pale faces, it was a merry party that Papa Burton escorted to the station one April morning to take the train for Pleasantville. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flowering Plant: As Illustrating the First Principles of Botany The present work has been written with the intention of illustrating the First Principles Of Botany by means of common Flowering Plants. NO previous knowledge is assumed, and the style is made as simple as possible, the technical terms necessary being carefully explained as they occur. The paramount importance Of Practical Work is insisted on throughout, and, wherever possible, easily Obtained Objects are described instead of rare ones, so that the student can readily verify most Of the facts mentioned. A short Practical Appendix is also added. No attempt has been made to write up (or down to any syllabus, but it is believed that the book will meet the requirements of most Elementary Examinations in Botany. A selection Of South Kensington and London Questions has been appended. My best thanks are due to Professor J. Von Sachs for permission to use several figures; and also to my friend and former colleague, Mr. John Brill, m.a., who has given me much kind help during the progress of the work. Any corrections or suggestions for improvement will be gladly received. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Study of Common Plants: An Introduction to Botany In the second edition, prepared in response to helpful suggestions from many teachers, a glossary and index, together with a chapter on fungi, have been added and several minor changes introduced. The arrangement re mains substantially as before, but teachers who prefer to start with the simpler forms and proceed to the more highly developed ones can readily do so by beginning with the section on algae, instead of following the order of the book. To those who approach the work in a scientific spirit, it is superfluous to say that the student's intellectual life has a developmental history which it is quite as need ful to take into account as the genetic succession of plants. There can hardly be more interesting problems than those presented to the teacher in his relation to this higher realm of biological science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant World: Its Past, Present, and Future; An Introduction to the Study of Botany It must be clearly understood that the above equation does not profess to Show all the various changes under gone by the crude material during its transformation into starch; all that is intended is to show the propor tions of the various chemical elements before and after the change. Carbonic dioxide and water are both inorganic sub stances that is, their chemical composition is not necessarily the result of life; on the other hand, starch is an organic substance, because its chemical constitution is determined by a living body, or by life. From the above it will be seen that the material composing the bodies of animals and plants is not of a kind peculiar to themselves, but consists of the most abundant of chemical elements forming inorganic matter, so that organic matter only means the rearrangement of the elements or constituents of inorganic matter in new proportions, and this is true of every organic product, whether animal or vegetable. It will have been observed that food is indispensable to the well-being of the individual; but in spite of an un diminished food supply, individuals do not continue to live on for ever, but in every form of life there is a limit to the existence of the individual terminating in death, and which is shadowed in under normal conditions by the lessened physical and chemical activity of the entire organism, resulting in the liberation of less energy, which to a great extent constitutes the ow of life manifested during the earlier period of the existence of an indi vidual.
