Book excerpt: A three-dimensional grid generation code implementing the multisurface technique is developed with major emphasis on the use of color computer graphics. A precise control method is employed to permit grid point control. A significant departure from existing approaches is the extension of user interaction to all phases of grid generation. This facilitates easy and rapid developments of grids especially for 3-D applications. The code is employed to generate grids for a 3-D axisymmetric nozzle and an aircraft type section. The flow is a non-axisymmetric nozzle is computed under the assumptions of horizontal and vertical symmetry. The Mach number of external flow is 1.2. The results are validated by comparison with experiment. Overall good agreement is observed with static pressure comparisons. Preliminary flow analysis indicates the existence of a number of interesting flow structures including shocks, pressure wave systems and regions of flow separation. This new technique is a time-dependent analysis which entails the explicite finite-difference solution of the quasi-one-dimensional unsteady flow equations in steps of time, starting with assumed initial distributions throughout the nozzle. The steady-state solution is approached at large values of time. A virtue of the present time-dependent analysis is its simplicity, which prevails from its initial physical formulation to the successful receipt of numerical results. Also, the present solution yields the transient as well as the steady-state nonequilibrium nozzle flows. To exemplify the present analysis, results are given for several cases of vibrational and chemical nonequilibrium expansions through nozzles. (Author).

Book excerpt: A hypersonic-wind-tunnel nozzle concept which incorporates a hot-core flow surrounded by an annular flow of cold air offers a promising technique for maximizing the model size while minimizing the power required to heat the test core. This capability becomes especially important when providing the true-temperature duplication needed for hypersonic propulsion testing. Several two-dimensional wind-tunnel nozzle configurations that are designed according to this concept are analyzed by using recently developed analytical techniques for prediction of the boundary-layer growth and the mixing between the hot and cold coaxial supersonic airflows. The analyses indicate that introduction of the cold annular flow near the throat results in an unacceptable test core for the nozzle size and stagnation conditions considered because of both mixing and condensation effects. Use of a half-nozzle with a ramp on the flat portion does not appear promising because of the thick boundary layer associated with the extra length. However, the analyses indicate that if the cold annular flow is introduced at the exit of a full two-dimensional nozzle, an acceptable test core will be produced. Predictions of the mixing between the hot and cold supersonic streams for this configuration show that mixing effects from the cold flow do not appreciably penetrate into the hot core for the large downstream distances of interest.

A representative afterbody model with a 4-in.-diam cylindrical forebody, a faired 15-deg boattail, and a 2.68-in.-diam solid body plume simulator was tested in an 8- by 6-ft porous wall wind tunnel and in annular jets produced by 6-, 8-, and 12-in.-diam nozzles. Afterbody Mach number distributions and boattail pressure drag coefficients obtained on the afterbody in the annular jet were compared with wind tunnel results obtained with boattail approach Mach numbers between 0.5 and 1.0. Boundary-layer profiles were also obtained during the wind tunnel and the annular jet tests.
