Book excerpt: The Florida Baker Act, which provides for involuntary institutionalization of individuals deemed to be a danger to themselves and others, was never intended as a tool to manage individuals living with dementia. Yet, it is too frequently applied by both lay and professional caregivers for that purpose, and often with unfavorable and even tragic results. This booklet recommends four components to create a "Better Baker Act." None of these is radical, expensive, controversial, or unattainable, and all are based on principals of person-centered compassionate care. They require no change in the law, but can result in less trauma for our loved ones living with dementia. These recommendations address Florida law and practices, but every state in the United States has laws similar to the Baker Act. The measures described herein are likely to be beneficial in all jurisdictions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES AND WASHINGTON POST BESTSELLER A call to action from three of Washington's premier political scholar-journalists, One Nation After Trump offers the definitive work on the threat posed by the Trump presidency and how to counter it. American democracy was never supposed to give the nation a president like Donald Trump. We have never had a president who gave rise to such widespread alarm about his lack of commitment to the institutions of self-government, to the norms democracy requires, and to the need for basic knowledge about how government works. We have never had a president who raises profound questions about his basic competence and his psychological capacity to take on the most challenging political office in the world. Yet if Trump is both a threat to our democracy and a product of its weaknesses, the citizen activism he has inspired is the antidote. The reaction to the crisis created by Trump’s presidency can provide the foundation for an era of democratic renewal and vindicate our long experiment in self-rule. The award-winning authors of One Nation After Trump explain Trump’s rise and the danger his administration poses to our free institutions. They also offer encouragement to the millions of Americans now experiencing a new sense of citizenship and engagement and argue that our nation needs a unifying alternative to Trump’s dark and divisive brand of politics—an alternative rooted in a New Economy, a New Patriotism, a New Civil Society, and a New Democracy. One Nation After Trump is the essential book for our era, an unsparing assessment of the perils facing the United States and an inspiring roadmap for how we can reclaim the future.

Book excerpt: KINDLE BOOK REVIEW, 2014 KINDLE BOOK AWARDS SEMIFINALISTOut of Mind, Out of Sight is a revealing history of the Florida State Hospital at Chattahoochee from construction of its original buildings in 1834 as part of the Chattahoochee Federal Arsenal during the Second Seminole War, to its current role-treating individuals who have been civilly and forensically committed. To put the Florida State Hospital at Chattahoochee in perspective, the story is set against a backdrop of the evolution of institutionalized mental health care both in the U.S. and Florida where new emerging treatments-insulin, Metrozol and electroconvulsive (ECT) shock therapies, as well as lobotomies-became part of patient treatment plans. For years, the Florida State Hospital at Chattahoochee had quite a reputation-most of it bad; but, the institution was not alone. For decades throughout the country, state facilities earned shocking reputations for their inadequate care and mistreatment of the mentally ill. Even more chilling was the incarceration of thousands of men and women who were not mentally ill at all, but due to ignorance and prejudice on the part of the public, medical profession, and court system, were confined for epilepsy, sunbathing nude, smoking, menopause or other "egregious" offenses. Some may wonder why an account of the obscure facility at Chattahoochee is important. The answer lies in its dual role as historic physical facility and evolving mental institution that, when combined, paint a poignant portrait of Florida-its history, its laws and its people; and it is incumbent upon historians to preserve this picture-the good, the bad, and the ugly-for generations to come.

Book excerpt: "Contemporary right-wing populist movements have propelled authoritarian leaders into power, championed reactionary forms of nationalism as solutions to economic and social crisis, and scapegoated vulnerable populations, leading to violence, harassment, and hate speech directed against immigrants, people of color, Muslims, Jews, LGBT people and other marginalized communities. The Perils of Populism gathers the writing of leading theorists and activists to explore how a feminist lens can help diagnose the global rise of populism and resist threats to democracy. It reflects on the roots of the current political crisis, shows how feminist and queer activists are challenging reactionary populism, and explores feminist visions of a more just, democratic future. Featuring interdisciplinary essays on the United States, the Middle East, Europe, and India, the volume contributes to a rapidly expanding literature on gender and the far right"--
