Book excerpt: Originally formed as a railroad terminal, the city of Florence, South Carolina, has developed from a township with agrarian roots into a city that is an indispensable medical hub and a place of flourishing business and industry. After being named for Florence Henning Harllee, daughter of the first president of the Wilmington & Manchester Railroad, Florence was chartered in 1871 and then incorporated on December 24, 1890. It is now the largest city in the northeastern portion of South Carolina, and its humble beginnings have given way to a heritage rich in tradition and southern charm. Images of America: Florence showcases storied photographs, culled from personal collections, family archives, the City of Florence, and local businesses. Each view, coupled with fact-filled captions, reveals yet another part of the story of this fine example of a genteel, southern city.

From the ten foot bomb dropped on a Mars Bluff farm by apologetic Air Force pilots to a record-breaking seventeen-inch snowfall, this Pee Dee hub has seen plenty of extraordinary events and famous characters. Here, William Howard Taft enjoyed pine bark stew and Herbert Hoover visited Mikado Milliea world champion cow known for her prolific milk-making. Longtime journalist Thom Anderson lovingly recalls these hometown tales collected over thirty years of writing columns for the Morning News.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a sister? What should a sister be? How do you relate to your sister—in childhood, adult hood, and throughout life? What are the characteristics and traits of sisters? What are the personalities of sisters? Are there particular types of sister groups? In My Sister, My Enemy, author Dr. Pamela Renee Applewhite journeys through sisterhood using various sister examples, traits, personalities, interactions, relationships, thoughts, whims, notions, and more. A total reflection of sisterhood, she shares various examples of sisters to demonstrate how we have been, how we have not been, and what we need to do to get it right. Filled with an array of touching and real-life sister stories, My Sister, My Enemy addresses a host of situations sisters face. Applewhite seeks to encourage sisters to find healing or triumphant victories. Geared for sisters old, young, and in between, she not only chronicles her personal story, but that of others who have experienced the joys, pains, happiness, trials, tribulations, sadness, loneliness, death of a sister, and revivals of sisterhood. It’s about getting back to love, to closeness, and to sharing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building the Italian Renaissance focuses on the competition to select a team to execute the final architectural challenge of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore--the erection of its dome. Although the model for the dome was widely known, the question of how this was to be accomplished was the great challenge of the age. This dome would be the largest ever built. This is foremost a technical challenge but it is also a philosophical one. The project takes place at an important time for Florence. The city is transitioning from a High Medieval world view into the new dynamics and ideas and will lead to the full flowering of what we know as the Renaissance. Thus the competition at the heart of this game plays out against the background of new ideas about citizenship, aesthetics, history (and its application to the present), and new technology. The central challenge is to expose players to complex and multifaceted situations and to individuals that animated life in Florence in the early 1400s. Humanism as a guiding philosophy is taking root and scholars are looking for ways to link the mercantile city to the glories of Rome and to the wisdom of the ancients across many fields. The aesthetics of the classical world (buildings, plastic arts and intellectual pursuits) inspired wonder, perhaps even envy, but the new approaches to the past by scholars such as Petrarch suggested that perhaps the creative classes are not simply crafts people, but men of ideas. Three teams compete for the honor to construct the dome, a project overseen by the Arte Della Lana (wool workers guild) and judged by them and a group of Florentine citizens who are merchants, aristocrats, learned men, and laborers. Their goal is to make the case for the building to live up to the ideals of Florence. The game gives students a chance to enter into the world of Florence in the early 1400s to develop an understanding of the challenges and complexity of such a major artistic and technical undertaking while providing an opportunity to grasp the interdisciplinary nature of major public works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, when veteran school administrator Thomas E. Truitt took the post of district superintendent in Florence, South Carolina, he assumed leadership of a public school system in denial of its racial disharmony. More than three decades after Brown v. Board of Education, Florence District One had never accomplished an integration plan that met federal approval; rather the district had skirted the intent of the federal mandate by employing freedom of choice and traditional attendance zones. In the 1990s, a single issue - the need to replace an aging, predominantly black elementary school - brought to the fore the local population's anguished attitudes about race and education. Brick Walls and Other Barriers recounts in wrenching detail how legacies of discrimination and injustice combined to divide a community along racial lines. Truitt takes readers into the complex inner workings of a modern school system, detailing the relationships between school boards and professional administrators to which few parents or citizens are privy.
